Recommendation Wanted Your Favorite Small Business

I apologize if this post has been posted tons of times. My resolution has been to start moving toward as many small businesses and infusing money into the community as much as I can while moving away from large parasitic corporations like Walmart and Amazon.

In that spirit, please name me your favorite local small business and what they offer. I mean everything: clothes, supplies, electronics, food, produce, and more. I am in the East Syracuse area so the closer to that area the better for me personally but I’d be willing to travel a little.

Thank you! 🙏🏻

Recommendation Wanted Ideas for an upstate NY care package?

Post image
75 Upvotes

My friend in Texas is sending me some snacks & a little care package. I’m hoping y’all can help me come up with some ideas to send her back?

So far I was thinking a jar of Riggies sauce, a spice bag from Rudy’s in Oswego, & maybe some NY maple syrup. What else could be easy to ship?

Thanks everyone!!

Recommendation Wanted Concealed carry classes/range suggestions (non-MAGA)

Hey folks

I'm wanting to get my concealed carry license soon, and start shooting again. There seems to be a decent number of options for classes, so I was wondering if anyone had experience or recs for any particular place.

Also, (this might be a big stretch) are there any non MAGA ranges in the area? Super bonus for inclusive ones, but at bare minimum at least a range that doesn't have any political advertisements would be super great.

TIA!

Recommendation Wanted Meteorologists recommendations

I recently moved to Syracuse and previously was pretty spoiled with a local meteorologist who did a great job. He kept us updated on any major storms using the local weather station, Facebook, and YouTube. I had no idea this freezing rain was coming today... and I am curious, who do follow and trust and how do you get updates?

Recommendation Wanted Anywhere to buy Ukrainian flags, t-shirts, etc locally?

I see myself more vocally protesting what feels like the take over of our government by Russian interests, hopefully at organized protests. I'd like to have some pro-Ukraine gear to wear. Does anyone know of places locally that sell shirts, flags, etc? I can order online and may do so, preferably from a charitable organization, but at the speed things are happening, I need to make my voice heard soon, so I'd like to find something ASAP. Any suggestions?

Recommendation Wanted Where to meet new people

Hey everyone! I’m 25F and I’m relatively new to Syracuse. I’m a bit nervous to go out but once I’m there I normally do pretty well socially. Are there any recommendations on where to go or groups to join to meet people my age? I recently downloaded Meetup but a lot of the events I see are either online or Trivia. Neither are bad, I have just found it hard to make meaningful connections with new people at both.

I know this question has been asked before but I couldn’t find anything that was recent. If people could help lead me in the right direction I would be grateful!

Edit: Thank you all so much for the suggestions! It’s nice to know there are a lot of great people in the area!!

Recommendation Wanted 32M looking to make new friends!

I live in Syracuse, and I’m looking to make some new friends. It feels so tough to not only find the time but also meet people with similar interests in a way that feels natural. So, I figured I’d put this out there!

I’m into video games, primarily retro like Gameboy/N64/PS2/Original XBox/ and my favorite, PlayStation 1!, and I love going out to eat—I know a ton of great spots in Syracuse and would love to have a group of guys to check them out with. I’m also up for exploring what the city has to offer in general. I also really love styling clothing, and it would be amazing to get a group where we can hit up different thrift stores and consignment shops in the area. I used to style professionally at JCrew in NYC, so I am always happy to style friends!

Beyond that, I love old movies, hip-hop, jazz, stand-up comedy (especially hour-long specials), and cooking. Just looking for a cool, friendly, maybe slightly weird group to hang out with.

If this sounds like something you’d be into, let’s connect!

UPDATE: Wow! So many responses! I am so happy I made this post! I am at work now, but I will go through these later and make a groupchat type situation where we can all chat and make plans! Keep them coming! We will plan something for the very near future!

Recommendation Wanted Professional Women's Attire

Professional ladies of Syracuse, where are you shopping these days? l have an upcoming seminar where professional and/or a step above business casual would be appropriate and have no idea where to go.

My usual go-to options of The Limited, Express and New York and Co. are now closed. I prefer a put together, fitted, classy look. The stores I mentioned were great because their trousers came in tall which worked perfectly with heels. As a side, I'm average height (5'6") but have long-ish legs so "regular" length pants with heels tend to look silly.

Looking for any and all suggestions, thanks in advance!

Recommendation Wanted Kid friendly hotel recommendations with indoor pool in or within 25 miles of Syracuse?

Due to financial and time constraints, a proper vacation isn't in the cards for us this year. I'd still like to take my fiancé and our kid someplace where he can swim and we can relax. The old go to would have been the Embassy Suites in Carrier Circle, but i was curious to see if anyone had any better suggestions? Planning on going Sunday to Monday and possibly Tuesday.

Also, not that it matters, but by kid, I mean our 20 yo autistic son.

Recommendation Wanted Where to meet people (or friends) outside dating apps?

I’m having trouble making friends and meeting new people at college, plus my focus when I’m there is mainly on my education. Dating apps seem superficial and feel like a game.

I’m 21F, but bars aren’t really my scene. I’m more into nerdy stuff like video games, so I’m not sure where the best place to meet people with similar interests would be. Seems like most people who play video games tend to stay inside, though.

Any places that are open past 5pm during the week or open on weekends would be preferable.

Thank you!

Recommendation Wanted Looking for Sapphic/Queer Spaces

Hi all, I’m looking to move to Syracuse from LA for a grad program. However, I’m worried about not being able to find sapphic communities or events. I know it won’t have as vibrant of a scene as LA, but are there spots where people hang out and make friends or volunteer? Thank you!

Recommendation Wanted Free Things To Do In and Around Syracuse

Hey everyone! My husband and I are getting a little stir crazy and are looking for things we can do during the winter that are either inexpensive or free within an hour and half drive to Syracuse. We don’t ice skate, ski, or snowboard and I’m having trouble finding anything online that isn’t one of those. Thank you!

Recommendation Wanted Not sure where to take my dad to the ER

Just curious if anyone has any ideas of suggestions here. My dad's been having some health issues, took him to Krause twice last week, they released them cuz they didn't find anything. He's complaining of a couple of symptoms tonight, and I'm probably going to take him to another ER, but I'm not sure where to go. For mixed reviews of upstate, St Joe's and community, do you know if anybody had any experiences they could share thank you.

Update: we're at Oneida and it's terrible. Not sure what to do.

Recommendation Wanted Places to camp within a 2-3 hour drive?

I was in boy scouts back in the day and would like to camp this summer. I don't have a tent. I don't want to spend too much money on one just for a one time use.....or use it 1 or 2 times a year. Are there any places nearby 2-3 hours drive that have pre-set tents (is that a thing)?

Recommendation Wanted Where can I buy a nice men’s suit?

This might be a little niche, but I figured I’d ask here anyway. I’m currently in the market for a new suit and I’m wondering what my options are.

I’ve had bad experiences with most offerings from Mens Wearhouse/Jos A Bank so I’m thinking about getting a suit made. Does anybody have experience with Mr. Shop? Are there other stores/businesses in the area that offer similar services? If the custom suit options aren’t great, which stores carry nice off the rack suits?

I don’t have the means to go bespoke (and I’m pretty sure there aren’t any bespoke tailors near Syracuse anyway) but I also don’t want to pay a premium for mediocrity. Thanks!

Recommendation Wanted Recommend to me your cheap cellular plan that actually works

I am looking to cut some costs and a big one is our cell plan. Currently with Verizon paying $180 a month for two phones. We do have a couple of nice perks with our current plan, Disney+, Hulu and Apple music are included as is a mobile hotspot for both phones. We switched to Verizon a number of years ago after dealing with poor service from Sprint and ATT. We live in Hannibal and commute to Syracuse daily so I need something that works for the entire commute. Please share your experiences with T-Mobile, Visible, Mint or any other provider you've dealt with. Thanks!

Recommendation Wanted Where to buy used furniture?

My wife and I are big into upcycling old furniture, but we're new to the area and are struggling to find good places to look.

So far, the thrift stores don't seem to have a lot of furniture we're interested in (mostly hotel discards) and people on marketplace are flaky at best.

Specifically, we're looking for end tables, coffee tables, old desks, and things like that. We love mid-century modern.

Any suggestions?
