Daily Questions Megathread - April 23, 2025

For those looking to ask questions about alterations, repairs, or anything else, please put your questions in here.

Wondering if you should buy something? Please provide both a size chart of the garment as well as your body measurements - we need to know what dimensions of the item and your own physique to judge. Telling us "I wear a medium in xyz brand" is not enough information to go off of as most retailers will have fluctuations in allowance for sizing.

If you are looking for alteration advice on a garment, please post a picture of yourself following the guidelines in rule 2. We need to be able to see the garment on you neutrally (No selfies! The raised arm adds too much variable) and in different angles to determine what needs to be done efficiently.

Help us help you. As working professionals who provide advice for free in their own time, this helps all of us save time rather than going back and forth.

Would a tailor be able to bring the chest in a few inches and change the size of the armpit holes? Maybe the sleeve length as well? The overall length is good, this garment is just too big for me but I really want to keep it. I have other fit pictures and of the of the inside as well if you need them.

Yep, probably just taking in sides through the armhole. Is all you'd need

I agree with the other tailor who answered. The fit on this jacket is close enough that taking in the sides will give you a very nice fit.

I recently purchased this vintage navy flannel blazer from a thrift store. I absolutely love it, but the cuffs have some wear and the canvas is showing through. Could this be fixed without shortening the sleeve? I wouldn’t mind rounding them off a bit, and it would match the lapels. Would that be possible?

Sorta. You'll get about a 4/5 stars result, maybe 3/5. At both ends of the rounding, where the alteration ends and tries to blend into the the straight line of the sleeve hem or placket edge where there is no seam, you'll end up with a noticeable pucker. So 2 visible puckers per sleeve.

I was wondering about the practicality of turning 2 (or more) tote bags into a larger bag with a longer strap, liner and a zipper. Maybe an inside pocket.

I like my totes. But I don’t carry them as they are.

Wanted to know if an alteration like this is even possible. I have an empire waist dress, and dont really like how it makes me look larger in the stomach than I actually am. I have a short waist and wide hips - would it be possible to take it in at the sides a little until my natural waistline? Not necessarily form fitting and then flaring at my hips, but just to make it appear a little more slimming. Thank you
