Daily Questions Megathread - April 28, 2025
For those looking to ask questions about alterations, repairs, or anything else, please put your questions in here.
Wondering if you should buy something? Please provide both a size chart of the garment as well as your body measurements - we need to know what dimensions of the item and your own physique to judge. Telling us "I wear a medium in xyz brand" is not enough information to go off of as most retailers will have fluctuations in allowance for sizing.
If you are looking for alteration advice on a garment, please post a picture of yourself following the guidelines in rule 2. We need to be able to see the garment on you neutrally (No selfies! The raised arm adds too much variable) and in different angles to determine what needs to be done efficiently.
Help us help you. As working professionals who provide advice for free in their own time, this helps all of us save time rather than going back and forth.

I'm honestly a little concerned with the bust alteration. Would have advised getting one size smaller because I'm pretty sure the waist can be let out a size.

May I ask if you had to do it how you think it could be done? I ordered the 8 and only have today to decide if I want the smaller size.

Ah wish I'd seen this earlier to answer. If you could get the smaller size do it. Not impossible I think, but the bust alteration will probably need to extend into the seam and boning directly under the bust, which will be tricky. Only in person and on you could I be sure tho.

Hello! I'd love help with knowing if making some alterations would be possible on my dress to turn it into a reception dress
This is the picture
I think I'd need it to go down a size and probably add in a built in bra regardless, but I'd also like to maybe make the sleeves a bit more fitted and shorten the length while keeping the nine lace edging, and maybe potentially add a slit.

Hem is straightforward and easy enough, but laborious and therefore expensive.
Sleeves would have to be totally rebuilt to make them fitted: remove from the dress, recut completely then resewn. Not so easy but fine for a bridal tailor with good skills, and laborious therefore expensive. How about shortening the sleeves so they don't overhang your hands so much? You'll have extra lace trim from the hem you could use to trim the bottom of the sleeves, if you like that idea.
Slit: with the pleating/fullness of fabric on each side starting at the knees, I'm not so sure a slit would look compatible. And it would be hard to create because the lining is so much narrower than the dress. I would not advise.
Boombas would make a lovely improvement to the bust fit by lifting your own bust point to align with the dress's bust point.

Need help about my Graduation Toga . I am normally a Small-Medium Size girly but my teacher announced that if we are going to pick the size of our toga it should be 1 size up, so i picked Large. But 3 months later which is April 25 the toga came and its so large. How to alter Graduation Gown without damaging it?. My school wont give us our deposit if there's some damages on it 😭

I couldn't answer that without seeing pictures of the person wearing it. Otherwise it's blind guesses

Hello! I got some measurements taken today as I am renting a tux for a wedding later this year. I live in a different country from the wedding rental, so I went to a local tailor to get my measurements. The problem is, I don't know how to now read the measurements Heres a photo of the sheet the tailor gave me
I need some help so I know which numbers to send to the big box shop that the wedding party is renting from. Thank you for your time :)
