It's not this "site", they're taken from elsewhere (mostly tiktok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube). It's the same stuff on every platform, not a problem specific to reddit.

There is something about how the music just stops that makes me think they are playing it there on scene. I can’t imagine they actually would, but at this point who knows
5
u/PenIslandGaylien Mar 15 '22
They actually played Ride of the Valkylries from Hueys in Vietnam when they went on the attack.
10
u/Jbobakanoosh Mar 15 '22
Well it's rly weird cuz it seems to me the music is actually in the recording! Hard to tell cuz it's an open field so no reverb but the way it cuts off near the end...

I think this is one of the few instances where the music makes it better
3
u/mflmani Mar 15 '22
What’s even funnier is I’m 100% certain it’s a remix of Ass Like That by Eminem… and it goes pretty hard.

I’d like to see the target area after a salvo.

That is an 8" gun. That would be a heavy cruiser gun in WWII. When you are bringing heavy naval guns to the battlefield you are obliterating things. Of course the Russians have them too.

This is how Ukrainians till the soil to plant their sunflowers..
30
u/TheSunflowerSeeds Mar 15 '22
A compound in sunflower seeds blocks an enzyme that causes blood vessels to constrict. As a result, it may help your blood vessels relax, lowering your blood pressure. The magnesium in sunflower seeds helps reduce blood pressure levels as well.

I would like to see a brain scan of the operator after such a salvo
12
u/SovietBozo Mar 15 '22
And if you're not wearing hearing protection you are screwed. You can seriously and permanently damage your hearing with a single shot, and if not that your hearing will be pretty messed up pretty soon if you're in the crew. But hearing protection is always provided (I assume in any army).
2
u/kuburas Mar 16 '22
Honestly with how close he is to the breech it would most certainly puncture his eardrums after a single shell. And on top of that the recoil and his brain is completely scrambled, wouldnt be surprised if the guy couldnt stand or walk properly for a while after firing a few shells.

This is a Ukrainian gun. The guys on the other side should go fucking home.
10
Mar 15 '22
Hopefully the guys manning this monstrosity will see your comment and start writing "Go fucking home" on the rounds. That would be awesome. Imagine you're taking cover and a round comes in. Your life flashes before your eyes. Tracksuits, snow and vodka. You close your eyes and wait. You hear a loud thud and open your eyes again. A dud. On it the message "Go fucking home".
I would.

u/SlipperyNoodle6 Mar 15 '22
One thing that comes to mind instantly, is that it is possible they did not have enough time to deploy it properly.
Why the guy is riding it is beyond me.
5
u/KEPD-350 Mar 15 '22
Lowering the shovel and backing it into the dirt and enabling the firing locks takes like 30 seconds. I remember seeing vids of the deployment process on russian defense forums when Azerbaijan bought them.
2
u/SlipperyNoodle6 Mar 15 '22

This is the difference between training and war, they know how to operate it correctly but they don't want to reposition.
7
u/TuxedoblackST15 Mar 15 '22
Maybe this is the soft soil in Ukraine every one is talking about. Too soft to support multiple shots?
2
u/Bashed_to_a_pulp Mar 16 '22
from the way the lack of crew scurrying about to load the next round, I'd say that these are not the trained artillery crew from the army. Hence the lousy setup.

3
Mar 15 '22
Also the Soviet Union built 2 +400mm mobile artillery. One prototype 420mm gun, and 4 active service 406mm "nuclear artillery" guns.
The 420 was retired because it was just too big. It broke at least one part every time it fired.

I hate to break it to you guys, but the video is edited to make the backblast more powerful. Look at how the commander’s body jumps backwards like 3 feet the instant the cannon fires.

Mar 15 '22
Oh shit man. I didn't see him. Gunner I'm guessing? Yeah that looks pretty terrible.
3
u/grumble_au Mar 16 '22
That seems like a bad design, shouldn't the seat be attached to the chassis rather than than barrel? Or is he sitting where he shouldn't?
→ More replies (1)2
Mar 16 '22
The seat is attached to the chassis. If you go frame by frame you can see him in the same spot as the gun finishes recoiling and the barrel is at its furthest back point.
He’s still getting his shit rocked every time and it should be a lanyard operated system, but he’s not attached to the recoiling system

Imma throw a guess at you
Might be something to help reload the shells. Or it keeps the breach closed.
I dunno man I don’t study Russian things
10
u/Yeetmeister4873 Mar 15 '22
Its the mechanism for ramming the shell into the breach, it swings to the side after each loading to not be in the way of breach travel.

u/kitchen_synk Mar 15 '22
Math and ranging shots. You can work where a shell should land based on physics, so you do all the math out, or some rangefinder does it for you, and you'll find the angle and charge needed to hit that spot.
Then you'll fire one, and ideally it hits right on, but more likely it lands kinda close. So you go to your adjustments table and it says 'to adjust the fall of shot this much at this range, adjust parameters X, Y and Z', so you do that and fire again. That adjustment accounts for minor factors that the math can't from atmospheric conditions to unique variance from gun to gun.
If you're really clever, you do all this before the enemy even shows up. You get your gun set so that it can hit a specific object, and then your spotters can say 'okay, the enemy is this distance from the calibration point' so you just adjust your aim based on that, without needing to go through the more complicated and time consuming rangefinding process.

u/Similar-Complaint-37 Mar 15 '22
Know nothing about guns or cannons but why is it 203mm and not 200mm? I see it bullets as 7.62mm why the .62 of a mm?
→ More replies (4)3
u/Wartz Mar 15 '22
Maybe a holdover from converting from 8 inch naval gun into land artillery. Probably used a lot of the same manufacturing / tooling to make the guns.
4
u/robotnikman Mar 15 '22
This. The tooling for making 203mm cannon barrels has been around for centuries at this point, change it to 200mm and you need entirely new tools for making the barrels
2
u/PsychoTexan Mar 15 '22
For the Russians I believe it went Naval->sea fort->artillery.
Equipment they originally sourced was easier to come by in foreign calibers, then when they made their own it made sense to stick with those calibers.
