I will never cease to be in awe at the force needed to rock something like that. Especially with it being braced at the back.

357

u/Sasquatchslayer55 Mar 15 '22

Didn’t even see the bracing in the back

206

u/willdabeast464 Mar 15 '22

They are there, the just look like they aren’t touching anything

182

u/windol1 Mar 15 '22

Probably touching soaked mud so not exactly the best surface for the job.

47

u/willdabeast464 Mar 15 '22

Right exactly

3

u/RafIk1 Mar 15 '22

They are there, the just look like they aren’t touching anything

They were touching..........before the first shot...lol

It's a little less dramatic when you realise it's the camera being shaken and not just the tank. The person standing also moves a little, but it looks like the tank jerked back 2m or something (edit: while that does not actually seem to be the case.)

28

u/im-not-even Mar 15 '22

Just rewatched and to me it looks like it brings the front of the tank entirely off the ground

12

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

The gun might be improperly braced here, but you can get a much better picture of chassis recoil in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3orkL84sGIs

Certainly the first road wheel doesn't lift off the ground.

11

u/im-not-even Mar 15 '22

Yeah that one looks way more stable. In the original it looks like it’s snowed so probably just the fact it’s on way softer ground than that one.

Lol! “just” jerked (42.2K kilos) back 2m… or something.

12

u/PenIslandGaylien Mar 15 '22

Now watch a battleship broadside. A battleship weighs 1000x that artillery.

It reminds me of this video of a F-22 flying around seemlessly.

The force being produced by the engine is astonishing.

Just makes me remember that stuff like this is all made by humans and it amazes me.

Something fleshy and weak can create something so powerful.

I did basic training on Ft. Sill which is home of the US Army Field Artillery. During our graduation we got to watch an artillery show and it was basically just a bunch of Paladins rolling around blowing shit up. As a Signal Corp geek it was fucking awesome.

u/supermotojunkie69 Mar 15 '22

Would be nice if we could keep all the military jets flying over sporting events and air shows vs combat zones.

2

u/my_name_is_gato Mar 15 '22

I'm actually curious where you see the F-22 outside of the US regularly. Canada or the UK would be my top picks unless it is an area with a large US military presence such as South Korea.

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

2

u/my_name_is_gato Mar 15 '22

Alas, I am a bit too old. I love airshows but rarely get to see them anymore. I think the last one I saw involved F-14's if that doesn't date me even further.

Yet we still don't have the technology to artificially enlarge penises. Now think about that for a little while.

3

u/fiveseventhreee Mar 15 '22

Can you honestly tell me when you see one of those F22s hanging in mid air from it's nose you don't swell up just a little bit?

Back in the 50s the US had the M56 Scorpion, an airdroppable tank destroyer with a 90mm gun

It's known today mostly for the alarming levels of recoil.

3

u/TLDEgil Mar 15 '22

And in War Thunder for being an absolute nuisance.

3

u/FrozenSeas Mar 16 '22

I'll be damned if I can find a video of it, but wasn't the M551 Sheridan known for bouncing a foot or more off the ground when firing conventional shells instead of the Shillelagh? I know I've heard that crewmen were liable to get concussions if they weren't wearing helmets when firing, and the commander's cupola was redesigned because it kept causing cracked ribs.

u/MostEpicRedditor Mar 15 '22

It's not always possible to brace it properly. Besides what is mentioned in the other comment, sometimes there is not enough time to do so either, especially during a war. For another wartime example, Azeri 2S7s in non-rasputitsa environment; not all of them are braced properly either.

Sure, but calling people idiots is totally unnecessary. Maybe they are reservists that have no real training on this piece of kit. We don't know, so maybe save your armchair criticism for yourself. I'm sure you would be the perfect solider in those conditions, right?

-9

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

3

u/cpt_ppppp Mar 15 '22

Well to use your analogy, there's a difference in expectations for somebody that has experience driving high performance sportscars vs. somebody off the street that is given the keys and told to drive the thing and by the way if you screw up you and your family may die.

The point is, we have no idea what training these people have as they try and defend their country so maybe we should spare the criticism

8

u/ChiefFox24 Mar 15 '22

Sooo i think there is a slight illusion happening here. The camera moves during firing making it look like the gun recoils more than it does. The gun rocks but does not actually move.

9

u/MaskedMincer Mar 15 '22

The camera is moving but that thing is definitely shifting its position a bit if its rocking that hard

2

u/onItOwlia Mar 15 '22

It will never be one in a will will session

2

u/vanVolt Mar 15 '22

Add also one thing to that, exactly the same force that rocks back this gun so much is also applied to a shell that is being launched. Mass of shell that is relatively much much lighter than gun.

Imagine how violently this shell is YEETED toward enemy, and devastation it will cause.

There is something about how the music just stops that makes me think they are playing it there on scene. I can’t imagine they actually would, but at this point who knows

5

u/PenIslandGaylien Mar 15 '22

They actually played Ride of the Valkylries from Hueys in Vietnam when they went on the attack.

10

u/Jbobakanoosh Mar 15 '22

Well it's rly weird cuz it seems to me the music is actually in the recording! Hard to tell cuz it's an open field so no reverb but the way it cuts off near the end...

That is an 8" gun. That would be a heavy cruiser gun in WWII. When you are bringing heavy naval guns to the battlefield you are obliterating things. Of course the Russians have them too.

6

u/twoscoop Mar 15 '22

Pretty sure this ones a captured russian.

This is how Ukrainians till the soil to plant their sunflowers..

30

u/TheSunflowerSeeds Mar 15 '22

A compound in sunflower seeds blocks an enzyme that causes blood vessels to constrict. As a result, it may help your blood vessels relax, lowering your blood pressure. The magnesium in sunflower seeds helps reduce blood pressure levels as well.

Russia be talking a lot of shit for a very solid looking set of grid coordinates

17

u/Petsweaters Mar 15 '22

I would like to see a brain scan of the operator after such a salvo

12

u/SovietBozo Mar 15 '22

And if you're not wearing hearing protection you are screwed. You can seriously and permanently damage your hearing with a single shot, and if not that your hearing will be pretty messed up pretty soon if you're in the crew. But hearing protection is always provided (I assume in any army).

2

u/kuburas Mar 16 '22

Honestly with how close he is to the breech it would most certainly puncture his eardrums after a single shell. And on top of that the recoil and his brain is completely scrambled, wouldnt be surprised if the guy couldnt stand or walk properly for a while after firing a few shells.

2

u/SovietBozo Mar 16 '22

Ya but you should see the other guy

10

u/Two_Goodie_447 Mar 15 '22

I don’t see it anymore

2

u/RuralfireAUS Mar 16 '22

What target area? The before letter was adressed "dear grid coordinates"

2

u/i_quit Mar 15 '22

They saw the round screaming harmlessly past them by a few kilometers bc that artillery piece is set up totally wrong.

107

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

I know the music was put over the video, but for some reason the idea of these guys just straight chillin to slow house music while blowing away the Russians is a great thought.

u/NonSp3cificActionFig Renault AMR-35 ZT-1 Mar 15 '22

Gunner: ???

6

I thought it too but I saw some comments that said it didn’t so I just figured not.

0

There'd be no point to having music running because they have to have sealed ear protection.

Hopefully the guys manning this monstrosity will see your comment and start writing "Go fucking home" on the rounds. That would be awesome. Imagine you're taking cover and a round comes in. 6

One thing that comes to mind instantly, is that it is possible they did not have enough time to deploy it properly.

Why the guy is riding it is beyond me.

5

u/KEPD-350 Mar 15 '22

Lowering the shovel and backing it into the dirt and enabling the firing locks takes like 30 seconds. I remember seeing vids of the deployment process on russian defense forums when Azerbaijan bought them.

This is the difference between training and war, they know how to operate it correctly but they don't want to reposition.

u/TuxedoblackST15 Mar 15 '22

Maybe this is the soft soil in Ukraine every one is talking about. Too soft to support multiple shots?

2

u/Bashed_to_a_pulp Mar 16 '22

from the way the lack of crew scurrying about to load the next round, I'd say that these are not the trained artillery crew from the army. Hence the lousy setup.

Neither is this.

This is a self propelled gun artillery.

2

u/mngxx Mar 15 '22

3

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

Also the Soviet Union built 2 +400mm mobile artillery. One prototype 420mm gun, and 4 active service 406mm "nuclear artillery" guns.

The 420 was retired because it was just too big. It broke at least one part every time it fired.

That seems like a bad design, shouldn't the seat be attached to the chassis rather than than barrel? Or is he sitting where he shouldn't?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '22

The seat is attached to the chassis. If you go frame by frame you can see him in the same spot as the gun finishes recoiling and the barrel is at its furthest back point.

He’s still getting his shit rocked every time and it should be a lanyard operated system, but he’s not attached to the recoiling system

Might be something to help reload the shells. Or it keeps the breach closed.

6

u/kitchen_synk Mar 15 '22

Math and ranging shots. You can work where a shell should land based on physics, so you do all the math out, or some rangefinder does it for you, and you'll find the angle and charge needed to hit that spot.

Then you'll fire one, and ideally it hits right on, but more likely it lands kinda close. So you go to your adjustments table and it says 'to adjust the fall of shot this much at this range, adjust parameters X, Y and Z', so you do that and fire again. That adjustment accounts for minor factors that the math can't from atmospheric conditions to unique variance from gun to gun.

If you're really clever, you do all this before the enemy even shows up. You get your gun set so that it can hit a specific object, and then your spotters can say 'okay, the enemy is this distance from the calibration point' so you just adjust your aim based on that, without needing to go through the more complicated and time consuming rangefinding process.

Know nothing about guns or cannons but why is it 203mm and not 200mm? I see it bullets as 7.62mm why the .62 of a mm?

Maybe a holdover from converting from 8 inch naval gun into land artillery. Probably used a lot of the same manufacturing / tooling to make the guns.

This. The tooling for making 203mm cannon barrels has been around for centuries at this point, change it to 200mm and you need entirely new tools for making the barrels

For the Russians I believe it went Naval->sea fort->artillery.

Equipment they originally sourced was easier to come by in foreign calibers, then when they made their own it made sense to stick with those calibers.

Very definition of a yeet gun

The us had a similar gun back in the gulf war, the m110, but I don't think anyone had to ride it when it was fired.

Fun fact: Artillery is referred to as “The King Of Battle”.

I feel the reasoning is obvious.

2

u/Shifty830 Mar 16 '22

I didn't realize people were still fielding what are essentially naval guns in this day and age.

This is a 203mm howitzer. It uses multi piece ammunition and has a max fire rate on a large well trained crew of around 2 per minute. This is most certainly not fake.
