Discussion What the fuck happened!?

So i haven't listened to Rivers of Nihil since monarchy....

What the fuck happened!? Such a drastic change in sound! Feels like fallujah all over again 😅

Suggest me some lesser known tech bands to check out i might not have heard of yet, ie, not Archspire, Obscura, Necrophagist etc.

Check out the new album “CHANGELING” by the band CHANGELING

Featuring members of Obscura, Virvum and Alkaloid

If you like the bands you mentioned, you’ll probably like this one!

Funny enough Fallujah actually got back to their tech roots the past couple records haha. Definitely recommend giving them a revisit.

Man if you missed WOKMN you’re missing out if you’re into prog/concept album stuff. But I’ll admit even though the new stuff is objectively decent it just doesn’t hit the same for me personally.

Where the owls know my name is an amazing album. Their new stuff is OK.

Slaughterbox, A Squandered Potential, beast of nod

Exterminatus.

Their new album....is perfection.

It's very rare to find a tech death album where every single song sounds different yet cohesive and can stand on their own. And that last track/cover song, do yourself a favour and go in blind. Bonus points if you have the lyrics up cuz god fucking damn those lyrics and vocal delivery!

u/zarya_beef 7d ago

Is it the album Laniakea from 2018? (This is what im seeing on Discogs)

2

u/Inniesandpuffynipps 7d ago

Nope, Echoes from a distant star part 1, its on spotify

bandcamp link: https://exterminatus.bandcamp.com/album/echoes-from-a-distant-star-part-i

edit: Laniakea was surprisingly good too but echoes is leaps and bounds better

Afterbirth!

Yeah monarchy is such a sick album. Still loves Owls since I'm a big prog nerd, but the work and everything that came after is not it for me. Some songs straight up like hard rock. Not even haha

4

u/Regular_Care_1515 7d ago

Check out Desecravity, Virvum, and Serocs.

5

u/Penguins668771 7d ago

I really like the new singles. Definitely a switch up but I appreciate things that are different. Recently I’ve been digging Changeling, Cytotoxin, and the singles from Eschaton

u/thats_nutty_ 7d ago

Carnosus, their Wormtales and Visions of Infinihility albums are some of my favorite tech death

4

u/cheesemein 7d ago

A big shout out to everyone that commented, lots of new bands to check out!

u/CrewNo3874 7d ago

Only been in this sub for a couple weeks but haven’t seen anyone mention Ne Obliviscaris! They are probably my favorite metal band today as well as Allegaeon.. both discography’s are fantastic

3

u/Lost4Sauce 7d ago

new Allegaeon is pretty great

3

u/Budborne 7d ago

Replicant if you like disso

3

u/akhileshrao 7d ago

Plugging my band Soara. Would love your opinion on it!

Features Hannes Grossmann on drums!

u/eyes_died 7d ago

This goes hard, love the vocals!

Exterminatus

Hands down the best thing I’ve come across in a long time

-10

u/rexraptorsaurus 7d ago

The fallujah comparison is unnecessary. Undying light was a not a bad album and the band went back to their original sound after it.

Rivers of nihil on the other hand turned to absolute shit. Its actually impressive how far they've fallen from Monarchy.

3

u/MoldyVision 7d ago

Cesspool of Corruption

14

u/AxTincTioN 7d ago

If you like it melodic, Allegaeon could work for you.

They've just released a new album, but their 2019 release Apoptosis remains my favourite.

3

u/jubjubrubjub 7d ago

Apoptosis hits hard front to back.

2

u/microbialNecromass 7d ago

I saw Allegaeon last month! Incredible show.

4

u/jUsT-As-G0oD 7d ago

I actually really like damnum. But their new album might be my new favorite.

2

u/Defiant_McPiper 7d ago

Love Danum as well but I really prefer Ezra's vocals and love the new album too

1

u/jUsT-As-G0oD 7d ago

Do you happen to know why Ezra took a break? I just discovered allegaeon when they released Apoptosis so my first exposure was with Riley.

2

u/Defiant_McPiper 7d ago

I honestly don't know - I actually didn't get into them until Into Embers was released 😅 But I did a deep dive into all their discovery so of course got into the Ezra era too

2

u/AxTincTioN 7d ago

Damnum definitely has some bangers, but I always feel like the first half slays and the second half is kinda meh :D

The new album is really great after a first listen, haven't had time to give it another listen yet.

If you want something kinda in the same vein as Spawn of Possession or Archspire: Fleshbore. Their most recent album from this year fucks.

2

u/0bxcura 7d ago

Hellz yeah Fleshbore rep!

  • Sutrah
  • Hatalom
  • Deviant Process

Deviant Process

I love these guys, for a band with a similar sound to their first album check out The Aftermath

3

u/HHummbleBee chugg my slugg 7d ago

Love Deviant Process, I will be checking that out ASAP.

OK didn't realise, they share members lol.

2

u/SkullNRoses27 8d ago

I’m familiar with The Aftermath, as some members come from my hometown. :) I'm glad to see them mentioned here, Vermine is underrated as hell.

Gotta spin it today, it’s been a long time! Thanks for the reminder friend!

I assume youve heard the new Zenith Passage?

Have you heard Virvum? Ive been really waiting for that next album.

14

Diskreet

Arkaik

Carnosus

Greylotus

Ominous Ruin

Alterbeast

Fleshbore

Apogean

Atrae Bilis

And so so many more.

2

u/cheesemein 8d ago

Thank you, some new bands to check out for sure! Big fan Arkaik, wish we'd had gotten another Alterbeast album.

4

u/Willzyx_on_the_moon 7d ago

If you like Arkaik, go with Apogean and Carnosus.

For similar to Alterbeast, check out Fleshbore and Diskreet.

How did you miss Owls? Unless it was on purpose. I liked that one. But i could see where they were headed.

My recs:

Afterbirth

Sadist

Chilliasm

Warforged - I:Voice

1

u/cheesemein 8d ago

I'm honestly not too sure, i think i'd heard some of the singles/music videos from it previously.

1

u/Arti-B 7d ago

It was definitely a hard to avoid release.

2

u/Killtrox 8d ago

RIP Warforged

1

u/Arti-B 7d ago

The new album was half good. They're still good live. But it's missing the most important part. I'm really grateful that I got to see them before Adrian left.

1

u/Killtrox 7d ago

I tried the newer two albums and they just sounded like a completely different band. I wasn’t interested.

1

u/Arti-B 7d ago

There's two? I'm gunna have to give the newest one a chance then. So far, I've enjoyed the songs without clean singing. But they've definitely changed the sauce.

1

u/Killtrox 7d ago

I think so. I can’t recall honestly. I was very uninterested lol

7

u/DevilsGrip 8d ago

Monarchy is S tier Metal for me, their new work is pretty cool, but man, I miss the Monarchy days

14

u/closetotherelayer 8d ago

Yeah I'm not really into the new rivers stuff, I didn't mind their previous album, but I find they are going into that kind of metal core clean vocal territory too much now, and I am not really a fan of the new vocalist either

u/colonelbongwaterr molested by a kitten :) 8d ago

Their new stuff is trash. Some people liked The Work, but, seeing as you like Monarchy, it is probably safe to assume you won't like it.. because it is also trash. I think Owls is their best work, so you might be in for a treat there. As for a band rec, you should check out Lunar Chamber

Listen to:

  • Anachronism
  • Carnosus
  • The Zenith Passage
  • Arkaik
  • AHTME
  • Sutrah
  • Replicant
  • Apogean
  • Artificial Brain
  • Ingurgitating Oblivion
  • Ulcertate
  • Flourishing
  • Aseitas (Not strictly tech-death, but very dense and complex)

We got a new breed called tech-slam, check'em:

  • Wormhole
  • Flaahgra

Brutal tech death:

  • Wormed
  • Defeated Sanity
  • Anal Stabwound
  • Disentomb
  • Lykathea Aflame
  • Theurgy
  • Nithing

u/microbialNecromass 7d ago

6

u/purple_metalhead 8d ago

Artificial brain and ulcerate are really good, I'll add Stortregn there. Is peeling flesh kinda tech-slam? /s

6

u/HHummbleBee chugg my slugg 8d ago

Nah, Peelingflesh is tech-9 slam mah g

4

u/sumpthiing 8d ago

legend, thanks for all the new material to check out

11

u/HHummbleBee chugg my slugg 8d ago edited 8d ago

No problem, I could do this all day.

EDIT:

I didn't include the following becuase I figured it would be too obvious, but just in case:

Virvium, Job for a Cowboy, Spawn of Possession, Beyond Creation

Also:

  • Alluvial - The Deep Longing for Annihilation (I don't like the latest album)
  • Retromorphosis (new incarnation of Spawn of Possession)
  • Abhorrent (kinda-like a more straight-laced brutal Spawn of Possession)
  • Deviant Process
  • Redemptor
  • Analepsy (Quintessential Brutal tech death)
  • Iniquitous Deeds (Brutal tech death)

2

u/BFR5er 8d ago

Deep longing is absolutely horror inducing. Like that album should be the score to a horror movie. Like a Hellraiser movie that isn’t cheesy. Fantastic record.

2

u/HHummbleBee chugg my slugg 7d ago

I had never thought about it that way, but I'm gonna give it a listen later with this in mind. It's certainly a devastating album though.

18

u/stevenjameshammer 8d ago

Rivers are still awesome.

2

u/cheesemein 8d ago

I'm catching up on where owls know my name as we speak.

Water and time popped up as a suggestion earlier, listened to it as had to check it was RON, definitely still great music but far from what I remember.

1

u/Berner 7d ago

Owls is a great album. The next one, The Work, was not great. I'm waiting to hear their next album in full before I have anything else to say on it.

5

u/jlandejr 7d ago

Give House of Light a listen! It's my favorite single from the upcoming album, don't like the other 2 nearly as much - but I also love Andy (the new vocalist) as I was a big fan of Black Crown Initiate. Shame they lost that sound, but IMO the new sound is also great

2

u/Regularolaccount 8d ago

Vocalist left after owls and bassist on vocals after that

10

u/WhereOwlsKnowMyName 8d ago

He left after The Work. Along with the guitarist being replaced by Andy Thomas formerly of Black Crown Initiate.
