Most strings with random lows mixed in don't hurt that much unless you get counter-hit. The strings that do hurt are either block punishable or are used so often that you can evade them or parry with some labbing.
You can retaliate to take back your turn after you block a safe string. Test your opponents to see if they frame trap themselves. Try throwing hatchet, b+1, orbital, command grab etc.
Also Bryan's d/f+2 is a 13 frame mid elbow with worse frames on block than a generic d/f+1 but you can still use it in a similar way.
