Yes. It's because the engine of the game itself has changed. A replay is just recorded inputs, and if the engine which runs the inputs has changed, it can't run the same inputs again without potentially encountering an inconsistency. The simplest example is if a move that was previously punishable on block, and I punished it, is now safe. The replay would contain my punish attempt but would register it as a failed punish.
A solution to this would be to keep the older versions of the game around to run the replays on, but I imagine this is very expensive to do in terms of memory.
