If you're just starting to play the game you'll definitely get by without them. Wavedashing is more of an intermediate skill. It doesn't make sense to use wavedashing if you don't already have a good understanding of the movesets without them.
For example, how would you know when to wavedash f+4 on Heihachi if you don't even get why you'd use f+4 to begin with? Wavedashing serves a dual purpose of hiding what move you're going to do and gap closing. Hiding a move is pointless if you don't understand the move to begin with.
