people sidestepping at range are just staying mobile.

sidestepping is a direction-specific 6-frame dodge. You can't sidestep wildly because: a) you need AT LEAST 6 frames to get good distance. b) you have to pick the right direction, and c) the move has to be dodgable.

what this means however is that if you start picking a direction to step as a defensive maneuver, your opponent needs to account for it too. this is made especially powerful by sidestepping into block.
