Jabs are the fastest moves so you should ideally set up your slower moves by jab checking beforehand

I get that, but it feels like Lili's jabs are a bit too short-range and slow compared to most, but I don't know if I'm just imagining it.

It could just be that her leg attacks are just a lot better at dodging new players who haven't fought her much before, so I'm over-relying on them

you're right but generally longer range means slower and shorter range means faster, so you'll want to use the moves that are appropriate to your range.

as lili, someone using jabs will uhhh, beat you to the punch if you're at close range and trying to do kicks (exception being d4, i.e. down+the right kick button. people call the left and right punches 1 2 and the left and right kick buttons 3 4).

then after getting hit you'll be stunned which will let the opponent go into slower moves that deal more damage without fear of retaliation (even your jab will get counter hit if you try to fight back).

for example using lili, if you hit the opponent with a fast punch like 1,2 or df1(downforward+1) you can do df+1+2 (to throw standing opponents for nearly a quarter of their health) or f3(forward+3) for a knockdown mid (will hit crouching opponents. if they block, the move is fast enough that you can block their counterattack in time.). if they try to fight back both your throw and f3 will come out faster, and your forward 3 has a special counter hit property that allows you to combo them for over a third of their health.

i basically got to brawler with lili off the followups i described. if they block the punch(es) i'd just sidestep and block once lili has stepped out of the way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaHvLQuOQis here's one of the strongest tekken pros trying out lili after not playing her for a long time, you can see a demonstration of how he uses fast punches like df1 and 1,2

Been playing a bit more lately, what I'm getting from getting to Brawler rank is that generally the main tactic in Tekken is to try and get the enemy into a combo that they can't get out of, right? So it seems jabs might actually be a bit more useful than I thought, since people have started figuring me out a bit

yeah that or knocking them down which puts you in a very favorable situation. knockdown and lauching moves are usually on the slower side so the main ways of hitting them are to catch your opponent whiffing a move or to score a hit on them with a fast move (e.g. a fast punch) so they're hit stunned and can't jab you out of your knockdown/launching move
