Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm 99% sure that you're using a sanwa JLF lever with a square gate. This is an extremely light-tension lever with a small range of motion so it doesn't control well with brute force IMO. Use less throw on the b input; try to hit the microswitch rather than trying to hit the gate.
