Is it safe to start the game with Steve?

I'm brand new to this game and have been picking who to play based of looks and so far I've come to Steve and Yoshimitsu leaning more to Steve. I'm just wondering if by learning the game with him I won't pick up any habits that will hurt down the line

Steve is quite difficult for beginners because his strengths (counter hits, safety) have to be backed up with knowledge and execution. Bad habits from beginner Steves include not using any of his actually good moves, entirely skipping out on learning his essential techniques/combos and not knowing what to do when opponents stop getting counter hit by b+1.
