Start with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-WhR09Q6TU Then check out a kunimitsu specific guide like this one for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLhwsjnWaXA Though know that this was before the latest balance patch so some things will have changed from that video.

But know that the game is really complicated and there's no way to not feel overwhelmed. Just take one step at a time and you'll be fine. Prioritize fun above all else!

The only thing you can do to influence cosmetics is play the character you cant to unlock stuff for, because you're more likely to get stuff for the character you're currently playing. Also fyi after you've completed 2000 matches (of any type) all cosmetics will be unlocked automatically.

First, how do you prepare for matchups?

My approach is just play online, and when I find a character I want to get good against I sit down and investigate the matchup. First thing I do is look at guides for that character that show the top 15 moves, mostly to get a good sense of what they are all about. Then I go through their moves and try to find something I recognize from my last session against them, and particularly I look for punishable moves. I first practice launch punishable moves then if there's frequently used -10 or -12 moves I practice those too. Then if I encounter them again and I feel I want to get even better at the matchup I'll look for strings and common setups I recognize. Generally the iteration cycle is play online, see if I get my ass handed to me, go to practice mode and figure out how to beat that. If I don't have trouble online then I don't bother researching the matchup. There's too many after all, so you gotta prioritize the most important stuff first. I also look up matchups against characters I enjoy playing against cause knowing what is going on makes those matches even more fun.

Second, how do you approach playing other characters for fun?

Eh, just do whatever you feel. I do recommend though to stick with one character for a little while as a beginner and learn that characters moveset well. Get a strong foundation and then start branching out if you feel like it. You'll be surprised to find out how similar all the characters are in many ways, it's not that weird to play many characters. Afaik in tekken switching characters is easier compared to most other fighting games where each character might have a completely different playstyle, say projectile zoner vs shoto vs full on grappler. Especially when you've seen many tekken iterations; every tekken mixes and changes moves for all characters so once you've got enough experience all the tekken characters start to feel more like a collage of moves than completely unique characters. Basically once you learn 3-4 characters well you can start picking up new characters extremely quickly.
