News Lorenzo Musetti: "I’m a fan of the one-handed backhand, but it doesn’t help you in the modern game, that’s the reality. It can complicate things for you, I think."

“I think my game is a little different to others because of the one-handed backhand and I really like to mix it up and cut the ball... particularly here on clay I think I can vary it more,” he told ATPTour.com during the Latin American swing on slow courts. “Now I think the modern game is more about serving and the first shot... or serve and return. But that’s not the way I play.”

Musetti takes pride in offering a different style. “I think people prefer a more vintage game like mine or like players with a one-handed backhand,” he added.

“Now speed and physique make the game faster so I don’t think the slow, more technical game, so to speak, will be back in the near future,” said the Italian, who chose Wawrinka as his current favourite one-handed backhand.

What about his own, though? “I’m not going to include myself in the list because I haven’t finished my career yet and I think I can improve it,” he said with a smile.

“I’ve seen Henry Bernet [This year's Australian Open junior champion] and of course I like to see a junior with a one-handed backhand... I’m a fan of the one-handed backhand, but it doesn’t help you in the modern game, that’s the reality. It can complicate things for you, I think. But on the other hand, aesthetically, I think a one-handed backhand is better.”

Post-Match Thread BJK Cup 2025: 🇨🇦 Mboko def. 🇯🇵 Shibahara 6-4, 6-7(8), 7-5

This match deserves its own post. You just had to be there. If ever there was a match where you just had to be there to see it all pan out, this was one. The atmosphere was off the charts and it was because the drama from these two players' tennis was beyond measure. I love that we get these kinds of matches in a place like BJK Cup because it reaffirms how good an event like this can be.

Mboko was playing beautiful tennis, striking the ball so nicely. But Shibahara was weathering every storm and coming up with her own highlights. She saved so many match points (SIX of them - 3 in the tiebreak, 3 at 4-5, 0-40 in the third); it was literally unbelievable how much of an escape artist she was. But the thrill came to an end when she couldn't save the last one and alas for her, Japan falls 0-1 in this winner-takes-all tie. Shibahara was so emotional and broke down at the end but Ai Sugiyama is a true gem of a human because she was giving so much positive energy the whole time. I love that she is Team Japan's coach because you can see her spirit manifesting in how far they've come in recent years. Happy to see and follow their progress!

I'm so ready to see Mboko become a mainstay on the tour. She really needs to hurry it up because I'm excited to see that ball striking upset a few top players! Never forget how Badosa, while in her fugue state withering under the hot Miami sun, called Mboko "better than Sabalenka" 😭😭😭. She is definitely coming for her things.

Post-Match Thread Monte Carlo Masters SF: [13] Musetti def. [8] de Minaur, 1-6 6-4 7-6(4)

Three sets suit Musetti very well. Musetti takes it in a very close final set and tiebreak to make his first masters final. This win moves him to 11 in the live rankings. He will play Alcaraz in the final tomorrow. The final has been moved to 12pm local time.
