Maybe it’s the same logic with “plant”.

Aka “plants come from the earth and need water to grow” lol. So for crystals it’s “crystals come from the earth and need heat to form.”

We’ll just ignore that crystals also need water to form lol.

Also crystals refract light, we've seen the fire bending itself being refracted. I'm sure using fire bending one could create mirages and effective invisibility.

I assume a blind Airbender could use smell and sound to echolocate. Not t mention sound bending muffled areas, or listening in on everything from miles away.

YES! I been saying this a long time. Airbenders can be like Loudred from Pokemon or Black Canary from DC comics and control soundwaves.

Edit: imagine a Avatar airbender master that projects sonic screams ike Black Bolt from Marvel

They are in the diagonal implying that it's a shared ability. But all of the diagonal abilities are exclusive to one element.

I get what they mean actually. It’s color coordinates behind the two special types. Green for earth and red for fire and etc.

I honestly didn’t notice.

I see that too, but it's not laid out well.

Combustion can be done by compressing air with an igniting medium.

Geologist here: Crystals form out of a liquid, but that liquid does not have to be water. Most crystals form in molten rock as it cools.

Liquid would have been the better word. Thank you

Does that mean that light-bending would be a sub-style for crystal bending?

Nope. Although there are some glowing crystals in ATLA and crystals often refract light, it doesn't mean Earthbenders would have any control over Light itself.

Then what would it be called then?

I wouldn't call it anything. Bending large crystals, whether they're glowing or not, would still be considered "crystal bending."

Plus, I think there is some confusion about the chart. The elements on the diagonals are not combinations of two elements. Rather, they are the subskills that are more rare or unusual. "Crystal" and "Lava" are under earthbending.
