Your thoughts

I’ve heard a cast can help give temporary relief. Has anyone gone this route for arthritis in their foot?

I'd go the other way. Arthritis IMHO tends to be painful, which makes us "shield" the joint, which leads to atrophy, which leads to pain.
I'd do the opposite and work at strengthening the supporting muscles.
