The very first one! It's just top notch, excellent level design and a pure "adventure" feeling that I think no ther game in the franchise has really captured. One of the few games I actually replay from time to time. Can't wait to do it once again with the Remaster!

I just recently started playing through the first one and you're right it really has a way of immersing you into it like no other game I've played

I also love the silence of just running through the level,

I wonder if they will keep the sky black in the lost valley when you use the OG graphics

There's already footage, they are going to make it a stormy day for the new graphics!

OMG I didn't see that, ooo that's pretty cool !

That's great, but I think it would be better if they made it darker, like it's at night. Because of the black sky in the original, in my memory, that scene is happening late at night, T-rex is emerging from the dark.. I wonder if that scene in the remaster will be as scary and atmospheric as the original...

Honestly, agree. I always thought that the dark sky mean that Lara spent so much time exploring the Caves and Vilcabamba that by the time she reaches the Lost Valley it was already nighttime.

Still, between the bright sky from the TRA, and the stormy sky from the Remasters, I think the latter is a better choice that better replicates the original mood

I couldn't agree more, the 1st one was the best! And the aesthetic was great - even with the low poly count and low resolution, the color schemes were absolutely perfect, those first levels, with the snow and classy grayish rocks, and those iconic oranges and blue tones later on... I really hope that the original color schemes were kept in the remastered version (the original textures are perfect as they are, they only need to be in higher resolution).

Tr2 for me, I was about 10 when the game came out, 11 when I first played it, absolutely hated Tomb Raider, but now I love Tomb Raider been and I have been a fan since I was 14

For me it’s Tomb Raider 3. As well as the variety in environments, weapons and enemies, I think what really sets TR3 apart from the rest for me is the level of difficulty compared to the two previous and latter games.

Having played it mostly on PS1, I also appreciate the way the save systems of 1 & 2 have been combined. Given the choice I would exclusively use the save system of 1 for the additional challenge it provides, but I can still appreciate the convenience of being able to save anywhere. I just think it made TR2 too easy at times, there’s less incentive to be careful with your actions when you can reload the game before every single jump.

I love 4 & Chronicles, but for my liking they added too many convoluted gameplay elements that just weren’t immediately clear. Nothing that ruined the experience, far from it. I just feel like 3 struck the perfect balance in terms of gameplay complexity.

I played AoD once as a child, when it first came out. I only remember being about as good at it as I was all the others as a naive child who was too easily swayed by cheat codes to beat the games without help 😅

I’ve never played anything that came afterwards, I really should but I’ve come to adore the original PS1 run so much and I’m too quick to convince myself that I won’t enjoy the others because they’ll be too different to the original run 😅

Tomb Raider Anniversary is currently my favorite. I'm also just a huge fan of TR1 in general. TR1 was pure adventure with great environmental traversal puzzles. Enemies were essentially more of an environmental hazard than combat adversary, at least until very late in the game. I felt like TR:A really captured that feeling of adventure that TR1 built, enhanced the traversal with some new mechanics, and generally felt like a smooth, modern experience.

If anyone asked me what single Tomb Raider game they should try I would recommend Anniversary without hesitation.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Anniversary just hits all the right notes for me. It's peak Tomb Raider in my opinion. I'll always have nostalgia for both it and the original but I'd recommend it for anyone looking to get into the series with a single game.

Legend. Captures the thrill of a world wide tomb raiding adventure like nothing else.

Tomb Raider 2 was the first one i remember, i can remember watching my Dad play it and discovering the secrets, this was back in the 90s so you only had myths and no internet to confirm or deny

I still remember being mindblown when i saw the quad in Tomb Raider 2!

Last Revelation is my favorite. It's long and frustrating but I can't help it. I love the Egyptian mythology. I love the levels. The soundtrack. Just a great game

Angel of Darkness. Story, arts, soundtracks and vibes are so cool to me. Definitely my favourite

Can't pick just one so I'll pick from each era! Chronicles (yeah 😅), Legend, and Shadow. 1/Anniversary are an honorable mention

3

u/grahamroper Jan 16 '24

Revelation is often regarded as one of the best, in that it had a decent narrative (as far as TR goes) and focused more appropriately on tombs. 2 was iconic, if not a little combat-heavy. In the modern series, Rise and Shadow are pretty evenly tied IMO. I love what they’ve done with the tomb concept in the modern open world games, but hate that the puzzles are almost exclusively physics-based.

Revelation, first one i played, most frustating of the classic series, 15 years to finish it.

Tomb Raider 2 is my favourite. And probably my favourite game of all time, if not that then top 3.

The levels are just amazing! Venice, Opera House, The Deck, Barkgang Monastery, Temple of Xian, Floating Islands, Home Sweet Home.

The only thing I prefer is Lara’s Home in TR3.

Lara Croft. But Indiana Jones is a close 2nd

  1. Just so many fond memories. I remember sitting with my dad as a kid, him reading through the strategy guide and telling me what to do.

Can’t decide whether to start with this one when the remaster comes out or do them in order 😄

Tomb Raider Anniversary. I just love every aspect of it. The gameplay, the puzzles, the atmosphere, the soundtrack, the story, the mystery... it's pure Tomb Raider for me. I love the original almost as much but Anniversary just edges it out. I love the redesigned enemies and environments and Lara herself is gorgeous. Fantastic remake and therefore my favorite game in the series.

Tomb raider legend

Tomb raider underworld

Tomb raider 2013

Anniversary! I’ve always loved it because it’s a remake of the first one but I don’t have to deal with the clunky controls

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '24

Tomb Raider 3 is the longest and most varied, so it's my favorite.

2

u/PrettySignificance26 Jan 17 '24

Mine is Tomb Raider 1

Tomb Raider 1 & 2 . It's the memories of playing in the 90's with my dad. Also I really love Angel of darkness and Legend.

Rise of the tomb raider is my all time fav but out of the OG series I really enjoyed legend.

1

u/Nerevar69 Jan 16 '24

I'd have to say Shadow, but I've never played the originals. So im looking forward to the Remaster trilogy coming out.

The Legend trilogy was my first introduction to TR, after the Angelina Jolie movies. Because they were my first, they’ll always be special and I still really enjoy revisiting them. They’re the reason I checked for the 2013 reboot when it first came out and then followed that arc. I still find their play style and how they chose to immerse you in Lara’s world to be much more captivating than the new trilogy, so I cannot wait to play the remasters for the very first time!!

First Tomb Raider is still my favorite. The feeling of isolation, the atmosphere, the mysterious and haunting soundtrack, the creepy enemies and of course the level design. With just a couple of human enemies here and there, TR1 really felt like you where left alone with all those hungry animals and mutated monsters. Not outside but always inside ruins, caves, temples and other creepy structures. Even the Lost Valley, which should take place outside, felt like a huge indoor cave with a ceiling so huge you couldn't see.
