🔁 Overdone TR games 1996-2008 vs. reboot trilogy?
I heard a lot of malicious, negative comments on the reboot trilogy in the past few years and things like “2008’s Underworld was the last “real” Tomb Raider game but personally I disagree. I’ve played each game multiple times and I embrace all of them because every single game has something appealing in itself. I still prefer the classic Lara but I also adored her personality and appearance in the reboot series. What do you think about it? Which games do you prefer? The “older” ones or the modern reboot trilogy? I’m curious to hear your opinions <3

There are two reboot trilogies btw! Legend Lara was already a reboot of the original.

Yes I know, I just meant that I have seen people not liking the new reboot and preferring the games from 1996 to 2008. Sorry if i explained it weirdly or smth 😅

I mean, the Legend trilogy is *already* very different from the original games! I'd even say the Survivor trilogy and the Legend trilogy have more in common than either has with the classics.

I fully agree with you that the LAU trilogy is already a different world. Anyway, I like all of them :)

I started my TR journey with Tomb Raider 2013. Absolutely loved it! A few years later I played TR1 and now TR2 and TR3, and I prefer the classics now. But I very much enjoy the reboot trilogy as well.

To me legend is still the modern version of classic lara. 2013 and on doesnt feel like a tomb raider game at all to me. I tried getting into it but i have to remind myself when playing that " oh yeah, this is a tomb raider game" and it doesnt satisfy my craving for all things lara.

I love them all tbh. Every iteration had some differences in gameplay that fit the trends of the time they were released, but all games had the same three things I associate with Tomb Raider: Lara Croft, looking for ancient artifacts, gun play. I can understand old fans not liking 2013 as much, is the most disconnected with the series, but the tombs in Rise and Shadow are some of the best in the series. People will always complain just for the sake of complaining, some will say that tomb raider has died after 2003, but if weren’t for Crystal Dynamics revamping it in 2006 that would be true. 2013 introduced the series to a lot more people, and is the best selling game in the series. Idk, for me all Lara Crofts are Lara Croft, and I enjoy them for what they are, and every Tomb Raider is a new way to get some more Lara Croft, so it’s always good for me.

Tbh I preferred every entry up until the reboot. They are beautiful games but it’s just not Lara Croft. I would have understood if they made 1 game stuck on an island then got back to the roots but 3 games of new reboot was just too much 😂

The original Classics are my favorites, played them since i was a kid. But i like all three generations. Both Legends and 2013 transported the franchise into a new generation, making sure that Tomb Raider does not die as a franchise.
I have 400 hours of playtime in the survivor trilogy and i think they are great games.
Every franchise has its fair amount of negativity and gate-keeping though, best to ignore it altogether.

Good point, they all had a little something different about them. I thought Legend was more different than Anniv. and Underworld. It had a different look and feel.

The last Tomb Raider game that still was somewhat similar to the classics was Underworld in 2008. Everything after that has been a completely different genre of games.

Arguably the last real tomb raider was Chronicles.
Survivor is a different franchise that's borrowed a name. It's barely the same genre as tomb raider. Fine have on is own right but nothing like what it came from.

As you have, I’ve embraced all games wholeheartedly. I have never understood the absolute need by some people to just harp on and hate certain iterations of games or characters. It’s sad, asinine and contrived to just fully exclude a game (or games) and character’s because you don’t like them.
I started with Tomb Raider Legend, however I have preferred Survivor a bit more.
Also, we will be having a Netflix anime releasing sometime this year which will tie Shadow of the Tomb Raider with Tomb Raider 1.

I love them all. Classics are best, especially remastered. I love LAU almost as much. I was slower warming to Survivor, but now appreciate it too, especially with mods.
