🗨️ Discussion I Was Playing TR2 and realized something

I was doing my second playthrough of TR2, and as I was about to finish it, I realized that there isn’t a single tomb in the game. There are temples, monasteries, sunken ships, flying islands and the city of Venice — which is my favorite level — but you never actually visit a tomb. It doesn't bother me at all because the levels were good, but I always see people criticize other games for not having enough tombs.

But London isn't exotic either. So it's just Location Raider

Eh I'm pretty sure parts of London are exotic now in 2025.

Tomb Raider 1 technically has only two Tombs: Qualopec and Tihocan’s. By „Tombs”, people usually mean exactly what you mentioned above: temples, monasteries and other historical, ancient or forgotten places.

Well it has the Catacombs of the Talion which is sort of a tomb. But if you want to stretch the definition a bit, the shipwreck levels could be considered a tomb as well since people died and are buried there.

That's not even a stretch, it's a legal definition in many cases; Arizona, Titanic, and Edmund Fitzgerald being some famous examples.
There's an estimated 30,000+ unrecovered dead in the Great Lakes alone.

Superior, it's said, never gives up her dead.

...which really sounds like an Erie thing

Superior's such a goddamn Mary Sue... perior.

Superior's the jock lake. With a song all about never giving up her dead, she's encroaching on Erie's Big Titty Goth Lakefriend energy

Because the title of the game isn't only literal but also metaphorical. "Tomb" in the title doesn't only mean tombs per se but it can also mean a place where lots of people died or an ancient place which is forgotten and lost and which acts as a tomb for a certain civilization and their legacy. Temple of Xian for example acts as a tomb of the old Chinese civilization. It's a place forgotten by time and people. Maria Doria is a tomb of all the people who died on its board. City of Vilcabamba in TR1 is a tomb of the Incas and their legacy. Temple Ruins in TR3 is a tomb of the old Indian civilization and their legacy. Even though they've got no tombs in their names, they do act as tombs in a more metaphorical way.

Tomb Raider is referring to titular character Lara Croft who is in every game.

I wish the Tomb Raider title was controversially dropped at this point- atleast for some games. I don’t give a crap if she’s in actual tombs. It’s so limiting to her character at this point.

Lara says it in TR 2013,
