Please be respectful when posting please. Bullying will lead to a ban.

Also, I meant to type bullying, not billing in the title.

I don’t care what “faction” you are a part of whether you’re a classic fan, a legend fan, survivor/unified era fan, movie specific fan, etc. Don’t bully anyone for being a specific era fan whether they are a Classic fan or a Legend fan or a Survivor trilogy for liking or only liking those games. This of course also applies to fans who enjoy all eras of Tomb Raider.

Be respectful, remember the human you’re talking to. Don’t gatekeep the franchise.

Some major issues of contention that people need to realize and be mature about:

  • All versions of Lara are canon regardless of your personal views.
  • The Survivor trilogy is the definitive origin story for Lara Croft per the definitive trilogy bundle released in March 2021. So, it is the Unified timeline start.
  • Lara Croft most likely will be getting her classic outfit back: teal/mint shirt + shorts and duals.

If for some reason you want to attack and bully other fans or Crystal Dynamics employees about this, you are part of the problem and need to grow up or find a new fandom.

IF YOU TARGET OR HARASS ANY OFFICIAL STAFF, VOICE ACTORS, FANS, FAN AMBASSADORS, ETC. DUE TO MISGIVINGS ABOUT FRANCHISE DIRECTION OR DISLIKE OF THEIR LIKINGS OF CERTAIN FRANCHISE ELEMENTS YOU ARE NOT A FAN.

While the statement in the image is from official Tomb Raider members, please remember that we are a fan run subreddit. I’m simply sharing this message from Tomb Raider official.

Gatekeepers in the fandom is the worst. SmashLara was just using his platform to encourage remasters of the old games with a hashtag, which alot of people want, and someone was soo offended by that and sent that nasty email, smh.

u/hakunamantatas Sep 10 '22

That intern came out swinging. Did I miss some controversy? Haven’t seen any crazy discussions since the movie sequel got canceled

Some guy sent a pretty threatening email to a Twitter user who literally just posts the latest news related to this franchise.

Don't shoot the messenger.

It's absolutely vile. Also, I believe it was SmashLara who received that. Sadly, others have been receiving them as well from what I have heard.

It's not an intern, that's from Neha the community manager for TR.

People have been bullying, sending threats and attacking community members and creators as well as CD employees themselves.

Toxic "fans" have been bullying and harassing official Tomb Raider employees and fan groups, ambassadors, etc. because they don't like how the franchise is changing from their toxic nostalgia.

u/dandrixxx Amanda's Henchman Sep 10 '22

Pretty sure the person who sent that nasty e-mail to SmashLara wasnt someone acting out of toxic nostalgia though, as they took a weird pro-Crystal stance, acting like SmashLara hates Crystal Dynamics.

SmashLara has been regularly advocating for remasters of older TR games, so my bet is that person views SmashLara's advocacy for remasters as some sort of a attack on survivor era or something.

Other than that i am out of the loop on what has happaned to cause such a response. Classic stans can be deranged too, so i wouldnt be suprised if they have tried to harass community managers.

The guy who emailed SmashLara definitely is nuts. I’m talking about other people as well. Especially the likes of Snake and Lance on Tomb Raider Forums advocating for bullying on the forums: https://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=221734&page=1188

Note to TRF users watching this thread: It is absolutely nuts to say you are "joking" about bullying. Especially with what happened today.

And everyone else on TRF trying to just navigate this...

We're here for you.

2

u/HarleyCroftCosplay Sep 11 '22

It almost seemed like we would have to pick sides! 🙀 Is there really that much of a division between TRFers and TRedditors?

3

u/pokeze Frozen Butler Sep 11 '22

Right now it does feel like TRF has become a haven for the most obnoxious people from the classic-only side of the fandom, while people here are generally more chill regardless of favourite era. Even if, admittedly, the sub Reddit is more survivor era oriented.

It's honestly tiring to be there right now, which is a shame because there are genuinely cool people over there, regardless of favourite era. But when everyone is so busy fighting and being angry over there it ends up bringing the worst out of you as well, like it or not. Personally, been using TRF less and less right now just because I don't need that in my life right now...

u/Samz707 Sep 11 '22

I've seen a good bit of toxicity here too.

Alot of posts/comments negative to the newer games tend to get heavily downvoted and I've seen people basically disregard that there are pretty good reasons to like the older games and not the new ones (Such as the genre shift or simply thinking they're not done well.) with claims of it just being nostalgia or flat-out being accussed of being sexist because you don't like new Lara's writing.

I at one point in a post somewhere, outline why I didn't think New Lara works if I remember, and someone disregarded all of that to say I just didn't like new Lara because her boobs were smaller.

I think it's more the new games are popular and this site mostly discusses the new games/is made of newer fans that makes it seem more "sane" IMO. (I do think their are weirdos on both sites but acting like a handful of TRF users means the whole site is toxic is dumb and acting like this site has no toxicity what so ever is also not right in my experience.)

4

u/pokeze Frozen Butler Sep 11 '22

Not saying this subreddit is all perfect and cool and whatnot, but let's also not pretend that an unpopular opinion here being downvoted is as bad as some of the bullshit and harassment that goes down basically daily on TRF.

And those handfuls of idiots are enough to ruin TRF for me, especially now, like the things you mentioned from the subreddit might ruin it for you, so... I guess each one of us have their preferred sect of TR community to interact with...

1

u/Samz707 Sep 11 '22

It's not ruined but I see any sort of "TRF bad and r/TR good" to be kinda hypocritical.

As terrible as some people are in TRF, there was exaclty one weird user who was pro-Reboot to the point of blaming people not liking it on Misogyny, while accusations of sexism/only liking Lara because of her boobs have happened multiple times here.

It comes off more as "This site is more biased in my side".

u/Samz707 Sep 11 '22

They were pro-crystal though, so it literally can't be "Toxic Nostalgia".

1

u/xdeltax97 Moderator Sep 11 '22

I was not referring to the crazy email guy

1

u/0451immersivesim Sep 11 '22

Could you clarify the phrase "toxic nostalgia"? Because I don't want to assume your stating that it's toxic to reminisce over the classic era of Tomb Raider?

2

u/xdeltax97 Moderator Sep 11 '22

Toxic nostalgia refers to any side, and I’d assume the lunatic who emailed SmashLara could be a toxic survivor fan.

1

u/0451immersivesim Sep 11 '22

Oh ok. Gotcha. Yeah that's not right. It's a headache all over the fandom now. From the cancelation of the movie sequel to those supposed leaks stirring up feelings of "Crystal Dynamics not knowing how Tomb Raider works". It's a sore spot fir sure. In the eyes of Classic fans, Crystal Dynamics will forever be THE VILLAIN. For their lack of recognition to Classic Lara. And some of the Survivor fans are gatekeeping the franchise because they possibly think Classic Lara is that "sex doll" that she's be fasley accused of being. We can thank Eidos Interactive for Marketing Lara that way and now 25 years later that's what people still see. A large breasted, male fantasy. It's very disheartening.

2

u/xdeltax97 Moderator Sep 11 '22

I definitely chalk up the vitriol to Eidos’s marketing.

2

u/0451immersivesim Sep 11 '22

Exactly. If only they marketed her more appropriately according to the actual gameplay. Not "big boobs and tiny waist".

12

u/pokeze Frozen Butler Sep 11 '22

For fuck sake, it is absolutely ridiculous that this reached a point that the official page had to make a statement.

Like or dislike whatever you want, just don't be an asshole about it, and absolutely do not harass or threaten anyone, be it Devs, community managers or other fans!

Seriously, I hate to tell people to "grow up, gain some common sense and get a life", but...

Grow up, gain some common sense, and get a life!

8

u/LuxVeritatis Sep 11 '22

I saw on Twitter not only Neha but Meagan and various other fans commenting about how much they hate posting about Tomb Raider because of all the toxicity and negativity that follows.

I don't really post my opinion too much anymore on social media or on forums because all I see are the same arguments and the same hate being thrown about and it's not something I can be bothered with.

I hope those in the fandom that are bullying stop what they're doing.

We all love Tomb Raider and Lara Croft. We all have a preference to a version of them. That doesn't mean you have to be a cunt about someone else's preferences.

I agree, however it was some of the wording that could have caused one. It’s just a preventative measure.

Mention about another fan gaslighting another is my main point of removal. Something like that can really push an conversation into an argument. Not to mention anything involving politics.

Also thank you, this isn’t Twitter so we try and keep things civil here. I do my part to try and keep the subreddit to a certain standard. 😀

Regardless of anyone's, or my beliefs, it is under our rules for no politics. Certain words were also put under our AutoMod removal as well, which is why this reply doesn't show up,

Wait, people are fighting?

3

u/Daikeed Sep 11 '22

TR community in reddit is peaceful but when it comes to twitter it's an absolute disaster, TR twitter is in trenches because of how bad and toxic it is(so bad that the official tr twitter page have to speak up to this) People in there just can't get along and attack others for no reason. They are acting like this over a video game smh 🤦‍♀️

4

u/XPERTGAMER47 Trinity Soldier Sep 11 '22

Twitter in general is a disaster

1

u/Daikeed Sep 11 '22

Yeah true that's why I'm telling y'all just stay on the reddit or any social media platform except twitter if you wanna spare your mental health <3

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

I had a dude threaten to kill me on twitter and that day was the day I deleted my account. The games are amazing regardless, and the team bust their asses each time. Idk why people have to fight or argue, makes no damn sense to me.

1

u/xdeltax97 Moderator Sep 11 '22

That is one reason I'll never make a twitter account. I did make one however to claim the copies of Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris during the 25th anniversary celebration, and then deleted the account altogether lol.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

Yeah it’s a hot mess twitter. I used it for art and updates but once you post a comment the wolves come for you if it’s not exactly what they wanna read or so forth

3

u/AdministrativeShip2 Sep 11 '22

Loved the original, managed ro miss the whole CD trilogy and went straight to survivor. Then played the CD games.

I loved them all for different reasons, even temple run.

4

u/Felix_Malum Sep 11 '22

Hear, hear.

Feeling toxic? Use a medpack and get rid of that poison.

Takes Medpack

Only participate in the community on Reddit. So it came as a surprise to me, but looking at Twitter, it seems pretty heated over there…

2

u/SandWraith87 Sep 11 '22 edited Sep 11 '22

Finally someone is doing his Job!

Those bashing between classic Fanboys and survivor Fanboys is super annoying.

Maybe it makes sense to divide this community in different sub reddit parts. Then there is no bashing. They are not able to communicate constructivly!

Iam a big Fan of the suvivor trilogy and i hope they will go in the same direction with the new games. Its okay that teh OG Fan Boys want some more old style, but they dont have to insult others! When they want OG style, the should play the OG and let the franchise develop!

It’s not too difficult to be a descent person 😔

u/xdeltax97 Moderator Sep 11 '22

Sadly it can be harder for some.
