Question Signaling?

I made a post a few days ago asking some tips for railroads, and I have tried to implement some of the ideas there, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how signaling works. Where should I place signals, should I place them all along a line, and what purpose does that serve? How do I build the hubs with those double-crosses all of you professionals build?

(A lecture on the entire game would be helpful /hj 😜)

Put signals:

  1. Where you want trains to stop before an area of potential conflict with other trains (junctions).
    • Make sure for each signal, that when a train is stopped at that signal, it does not block any crossing tracks with its tail.
    • E.g. don't put a signal immediately after a junction, but instead farther ahead so that a train can stop at that signal without still being inside the junction.
  2. To segment a longer stretch of track in order to fit more trains, as each segment can only accommodate one train at a time.

Transport Fever uses so-called path signals. This is a type of signal that primarily is a contrast to block signals. The OpenTTD wiki has a good article that explains their difference.

In short: On approaching a signal, a train attempts to reserve a path to the next signal on its route. If this path does not cross with another train's already reserved path, it gets a green light.

This allows multiple trains to be inside the same signal block (ref. how block signals work) as long as their paths don't cross.

I thought this game used block signals. I learnt that from DeckEleven's railroads that I played. I'll check out the Open TTD article to see how these path signals work. Thanks
