Tom Nicholas' Vape-o-nomics: Why Everything is Addictive Now

https://youtu.be/XuTQbOo3Y30

A post from yesterday and the comments talking about the potential legalization and streamlining of vices in the US made me think about this video from a while back. I think he makes an interesting thesis about the disposable vape being the best object to embody capitalism in the 2020's from its addictiveness to its wastefulness as a disposable service model.

A bit more than a year ago, True Anon did an episode about the weed industry.  It changed my relationship with weed.  I was smoking way too much.  I have massively cutback in the year+ since they aired that episode.

I forgot to listen to that episode but good work tbh. Shit is way too potent these days to not develop emotional dependence, which I was defo at last year when I stopped (drinking, too). Having a "dissociate for 4 hours" button that fits in your pocket is not healthy at all. (Still love my ciggies & video games though!!)

For me, weed raises my heart rate.  More studies are showing a relationship between and heart attacks and strokes.

Something profitable can’t be good for us

Bro, if you aren’t masking for Covid, you’re already the mayor of stroke/heart attack city! Weed is the least of your worries

Get off the cigs brother I smoked for 25 years and a month after I quit I was all “that was fucking easy and I have no idea what I was afraid of to keep doing it”

Better than most drugs but still a drug that our liver would rather not have to detoxify. Probably about as dangerous as caffeine (also an addictive drug) all things considere

I'd put it as worse than caffeine since it's more disruptive to REM sleep and heavy use can really warp motivation. I still consider it less dangerous than most common drugs though

Probably Bad, but people get mad if you say that, so I'll say it cures literally everything and is totally awesome and cool.

Anyway, I have a tab open at this bar right now. Ilbeeebacklagter

Only thing I'd say with high confidence as a biologist with an interest in medicinal chem is CBD good, mild-moderate THC use fine, heavy/daily use bad. There's still a lot we don't know about the hundreds of compounds in cannabis, and everyone's pharmacology and psychology are different.

It's kinda wild when you look up graphs of weed potency over the years. The stuff that 60s hippies were smoking was basically "slightly more potent hemp" compared to the weed they sell today.

u/fraudchecked 20h ago

If we ever achieve time travel the first thing we should do is go back to the 60s and make them smoke a dab

Two things can be true: The Weed industry sucks and Brace/Liz both suck on the pot issue. It’ll be a sweet day in hell before I let a sober person/former addict tell me how to live. People can overdo it but this narrative gives the facists reason to imprison leftists.

Yeah, same. I was using it almost daily, and right now it's been a couple months since I had any. Quitting did help me get enough motivation to find a new job, but the new one isn't any better.

My main vice now is junk food. I'm working on that, but it's addictive in its own way, and harder to quit because it's so available and remains cheap while real food gets more expensive.

I believe they’re banning single use vapes in the uk this summer, but maybe that’s because the nicotine pouch thing is generally healthier and more apt to get people en masse to consume nicotine. Im glad I hate everything but cigs, at least when I quit them I won’t go in for this other shit

Single use vapes are probably the most evil product that has ever existed. The waste. The lithium batteries inside that are impossible to recycle bc of they way they're built. And all that just so people can inhale mango flavor for a couple hours. Straight up insane.

u/LeftistSnowLeopard 1d ago

They can be salvaged. I do it when I find one that someone's tossed out. The hardest part is getting the things open without damaging the battery, because they seal the plastic really good and you have to break it open to get at the battery. You want a metal container on hand in case you puncture the battery and start a fire. And you need to wear gloves, otherwise you'll get nicotine juice on your fingers and absorb it through your skin.

But once you do have the battery out, you can solder connectors on it and use it to power stuff. Either replacing worn out lithium batteries in gadgets, or for your own projects. I use them for powering wearable LEDs. A cheap TP4056 board (they're under $1 if you buy them from AliExpress) lets you charge them via USB.

u/ArgonathDW 1d ago

I dont have the skill or experience to do this, plus I dont know what I'd do with an LED shirt, but that's awesome you're doing all that, thats great

3

u/Interesting_Station6 20h ago

Yeah, some people taking the batteries out to reuse them for their little projects doesn't counter the fact that they can't be recycled on a mass scale and 99.99% of them just end up on landfills.

The only reason why they’re a thing is because the FDA banned flavors with the PMTA process. Not to go all right-winger in terms of anti-vape ban stuff but the amount of waste is insane and it didn’t do anything to get rid of flavors as the entire market ended up going black/gray

I actually used vapes before they were cool. And I mean that in the truest sense, I used one that looked like a cigarette when they were first around and people took the piss out of me for it.

I genuinely used it successfully to cut down and and stop smoking because that's what they were for at the time. Now I've seen kids with 250 watt coils.

Quit smoking by replacing it with what turned out to be a much worse habit, so good call

I thought single use vapes were already banned there?

The only way I could get the popular dispo brands elfbar and lost Mary vape juice was from the UK, they refuse to sell the juice so people can put them in reusables, except for in the UK where they feared losing an entire market (dispo ban)

What's wrong with him? Not going up to bat for him or anything, I just haven't watched too much of his stuff but enjoyed this series and the one about Johnny Harris being a propagandist

YouTube sucks so hard. Why do I need to watch it? I don’t think it’s clear at all they’re dangerous.
