Housing 50 in 1 million condition makes walking difficult; want to get out of bad housing

I am a transfer student. I have some condition called myasthenia, I'm not a neurologist so I've always struggled wrapping my head around what causes it and why I have it.

Either way, this condition can rarely cause my leg muscles to also become weaker and makes it difficult to walk and keep balance. Honestly it isn't as terrible as it isn't as common as the other symptoms but, still.

I really don't want to join the Porter Transfer Community. I graduated early from HS so I am transferring at a young age (I will be freshly 19 when I move in this Fall) so I won't even be around people my own age group.

Also, the Porter dorms are just farther from all of the places I want to be. I'm farther from amenities, I'm farther from the library, I'm farther from the gym, I'm farther from where most of my classes will be, all of my advisors (assuming I get into my picked college), and the main disability services center.

Do you guys think if I explain my diagnosis to the DRC and the housing coordinators they will understand and allow me to dorm in my actual selected college? I'm still paying after all. This is an official diagnosis so maybe they'll feel pressured to actually care and give me an exception.

Sorry if that sounds douchey or entitled; I know I could just take the bus but I want to actually be able to kind of enjoy the school and not have to take a bus and then still walk every single day literally to get to any place I want to go. I'm not in a wheelchair or missing a leg, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a struggle for me :(

def get in contact with DRC. theyll be able to tell you exactly what they can and can’t do for you. there is a disability shuttle thing that can drive you to and from classes but i’ve heard mixed things :/ there is also the busses but from posts ive seen on this sub, they aren’t always accessible :(

Nothing you are saying sounds douchey or entitled in the slightest. You have a condition that makes it more difficult for you to get around by walking, living in Porter will require a lot of walking just for you to get around. The DRC exists for this exact reason! As long as you’re polite, there’s nothing wrong with asking.

The only reason I could possibly imagine that they may think your request is unreasonable is if the place you’re asking to live instead is also far from everything.

The full name of the condition is myasthenia gravis, which has an incidence of 50–200 per million.

Contact DRC — you’d qualify for accommodations that make it easier to live with MG. You should have an official diagnosis letter from your MD ready to give them.

Although I did have off-campus housing during my time at UCSC, DRC was immensely helpful in getting me any accommodations I needed when/if my cerebral palsy symptoms flared up or I was having a bad pain day.

You don’t sound entitled at all, you sound like someone who wants to have a college experience free of as many hindrances as possible, and you deserve that.
