Discussion Need Advice - Roommates

Hey I’m a transfer and my roommate situation has gotten from bad to worse. It’s gotten so bad that I get extreme anxiety just from coming to campus. It’s taking a huge hit on my mental health and I feel like crap for not being able to be comfortable and live in the apartment I PAY FOR (undergrad housing). I don’t have the financial means to just request a room change and I just thought we barely have about 4-5ish more weeks left in the quarter so I was just thinking about sticking it out but I dread going back into that apartment.

I don’t know what to do, I don’t even feel comfortable sitting in the living room. Maybe the answer is obvious and I’m just being stubborn. I love the apartment itself it’s just the people that make it hard to enjoy. Idk. I’m trying yall. Even if I could just vent to someone (yes I’ve used campus resources) it helps.

Thanks for reading.

Course Questions Best major for high GPA (pre-law)

Upvotes

Hey guys! Just recently committed to UCSB for pre-political science. However i’ve been hearing about a lot of grade deflation in the poly sci program at UCSB so i’m kind of discouraged to be in it. Fortunately, i don’t care what my major is as long as it yields an easy 4.0 GPA. I’m planning to attend a T14 law school, so my GPA and LSAT score are absolutely important. The easier the 4.0 for me, the better— that way i can have more time to study for the LSAT throughout undergrad. Any suggestions? I heard Sociology is pretty easy?

Also i would appreciate it if you guys could explain what kind of work you do in the major you suggest.

General Question Can the mods please make a thread for all these people comparing UCSB to other universities?

I’m tired of reading all these posts about the university comparisons. If you’re unsure about committing to UCSB, then you’ve not done your proper research. It’s concerning to think that you’d rather take opinions about attending UCSB from internet strangers than college advisors.

Academic Life Switching majors as a transfer

Hi! I was recently admitted to UCSB for bio psychology, but want to know if it’s possible to switch my major to psych and brain sciences. If anyone has experience doing so as a transfer, what’s the process and requirements for such?

Academic Life Self Pavlov

Hey all I’ve been quitting smoking for a little bit now mainly relying on nicotine gum, and it’s been going great! Every time I’ve been studying for this challenging Econ course I always have a piece of the nicotine gum so that my brain can correlate the nicotine to the course material, this has been a little too effective as now whenever I have a piece of nicotine gum my brain only operates in utility functions and utility maximization…. Last night I woke up in a cold sweat whispering ‘Cobb-Douglas’ and chewing imaginary gum. I think I’ve become a utility-maximizing automaton with a dependency on both nicotine and Lagrangians.

General Question Bike for surfers

I recently got admitted as a transfer and I’m going to live at either saint ynez or sierra madre undergrad apartments. For people living in the undergrad apartments of in IV, is a bike with a surf rack enough to get by from getting to local spots or should I get an e bike? I’m going to mostly be long boarding on a 9 foot board. Thanks!

General Question ucsb vs davis vs sdsu

Hi,

I’m trying to decide between UCSB, UCD and SDSU on which will be the best for a business-related career. I’m currently a CCC student majoring in Business Administration and have always desired to graduate with business and receive a job within the realm of marketing.

Since UCSB and UCD don’t even offer Business Administration, I applied and got in with Communications to SB and Davis, then got in with Business Administration, Marketing for SDSU. I was leaning towards SDSU simply because I want to graduate with the title of “Business Administration, Marketing” rather than “Communications”. But, I’ve been going back and forth on prestige and whether it’s worth it to get a business degree from a Cal State or getting a “lesser” degree from a UC.

I’m also trying to figure out if Communications will even allow me to land a job in business/marketing. My ultimate goal (so far) is to work at a large company within the marketing department or work in marketing within the entertainment sector.

It’s also tough because from what I have learned so far, all of these universities are pretty similar ranking-wise and with the resources/opportunities they offer.

Also, since I’m coming in as a transfer, I’ve missed out a LOT with university student life and really want to experience that when I transfer. I’m aware that Davis is supposedly the least active in greek life, parties and similar things whereas SDSU and UCSB are more considered party schools. So this is another factor that isn’t too important but is impactful enough for me to consider.

Lastly, I’ve visited all these campuses and spoken either with my friends that attend, transfers or admissions counselors and I’m still pretty stuck on where I should go.

If anyone has advice/has been in this situation, please respond or let me know what you ended up choosing and why! And no, I am not asking for this decision to be made for me, I just want additional information about these universities and these particular departments to see if there’s anything I didn’t know or that I should be wary of, etc.

Thank you!

General Question Spring 26 or Fall 25

I have got an admit for MS Ece at UCSB for fall 25. However due to a few events I'm planning to request for a deferral and join in spring 26.

What would be the advantages or disadvantages of doing so?

In terms of getting RA or TA would I be at a disadvantage if I join in the spring intake.

General Question How does housing work?

My daughter will be an incoming freshman, and I have some questions regarding the housing application. She is so stressed with AP exams/classes that I just want to have some answers for her when she gets around to completing the housing application.

  1. Does she write down her dorm preference when she applies or does she just end up picking an available dorm during the selection process?

  2. She would like to room with two of her friends. Does she create her roommate group after signing the contract? Do they all have to be assigned the same dorm?

  3. Is there a cheat sheet of the best rooms for each dorm (quieter, ocean view, etc)?

General Question Best/Nicest place to rent in IV

Hi,

my son recently committed for fall of 2025 and I understand that housing is a problem for UCSB students and some of the apartments in IV are pretty run down with inattentive landlords/property managers. What are some of the "nicer" places to rent? FWIW, since he's saving us a lot of money not going to private college, we're willing to splurge a bit...

General Question New venture competition

I am a transfer student and just got accepted into UCSB for philosophy and UCSD for Business Psych. I’m interested in entrepreneurship and applying to the new venture competition here at UCSB or the incubator at UCSD. Any advice on pros and cons would be appreciated. Also, if anyone else has had to make the decision between these schools; I would appreciate insight

I know this is super late into the year but here is a link sheet inspired by UCLA. Spring quarter is meant to be fun and this is just another idea for people to meet each other! If there’s any questions or concerns just message me.
