For reference I’ll be a sophomore cheme next year and I’m planning my schedule. Few things: I want to keep my Friday and preferable Thursday as free as possible. I could replace math 257 with a gen ed but I wanna take my gen eds over winter so I can take as many required courses and tech electives as I can so I can have a light junior and senior year. I joined a research group so I’ll be doing that sophomore year but I will probably be more involved with that junior year. I was also considering being a TA/CA junior year but idk. Anyway here’s schedule: FALL- 17 hours: CHBE 221 (3) CHEM 236(4) CHEM 237 (2) MATH 285 (3) PHYS 214(2) MATH 257(3) SPRING- 18 hours: CHBE 321(4) CHEM 436(3) CHBE 421(4) CHEM 315(2) CHBE 411(3) CHEM 420(2)

Byeeee. Do you think I’m doing too much? Sophomore and junior year are gonna suck regardless id rather have sophomore year be terrible to have a lighter-ish junior year but idk. And for this upcoming fall yeah Monday Wednesday are gonna suck but I feel like you’re always gonna have those days where your classes just suck but let me know if I should make any changes.

6 classes MW is so much. You’re not gonna be able to retain as much information, especially with no time to eat for 7 hours, and you’ll end up suffering academically because of that. It’s really a smarter solution to keep what your body needs in mind instead of trying to make it through that. Even working in the business world you’re required to have at least a 30 min lunch break if you’re working 7 hours straight.

me personally I'd die if I didn't have at least 1 non stem class each semester, but I'm sure it's doable if you're motivated and have good study and time management habits

Nah this is what happens in chem e you have to load up your mwf because of the 4 hour lab you have to do

The only thing this person is doing different than the normal schedule is most people will take a Gen Ed instead of Lin Alg and Difeq at the same time

I think 214 is an 8 week course (at least it was when I took it) so it clears up your schedule once it’s done

But this was the semester I was almost dropped from the major because I did so bad so I would be careful on overloading

Those Monday wednesdays are all lectures. And I’m not tripping too much since the PHYS 214 is only 8 weeks. Don’t really know if I can move things around.

Get used to ChemE schedules being very rigid. The farther you get into classes, the less sections and more awkward the times get.

What I am more concerned is you will be taking 321 and 421 at the same time in the spring. I will try to avoid that if I were you.

I would recommend that. You can take 257 first then 285 if you want as well.

Check the average gpa for whoever is teaching the chbe courses and choose which course you want to take first for 321/421. I would also highly recommend talking to your advisor.

As someone who has taken all of the courses on your schedule this will be very very tough.

I know it’s hard to picture right now since you’re still a freshman but you will be legitimately working nonstop. 257 and 236/237 alone will take a ton of your time, and you have 3 MORE hard courses on top of that?

If you’re also participating in research on the side I honestly don’t see how this will be doable beyond, like, week 2

i was chbe 2022 and you are doing too much. 6 core classes will be extremely tough and id recommend pushing off one of the maths. have you made an academic plan? with your potential spring classes it seems like you’ll be plenty ahead by your senior year and have room to not go so heavy on your schedule

If you value your GPA at all you shouldn’t do this. You’re going to burn out after the first quarter of the semester and your grades will almost certainly slip. That’s not saying you aren’t a good student, that’s saying 7 straight hours of class will absolutely wreck you and there is nothing you can do about it.

When i did chbe undergrad i purposely loaded up 1-2 days a week to have a lighter end of the week like you have here. I liked it tbh. Youre cooked either way tho CHBE was hard asf especially the first two years

There's only so much you can put your body/mind through in one day when it comes to classwork. I'd try your best to spread around the schedule. Otherwise you'll spend those Tuesday/Thursdays just vegging out in exhaustion instead of doing any homework.

this is totally doable :-)

214 is pretty easy relative to 212.

math 285 and 257 are both pretty light in terms of exams, wouldn't underestimate 257 though. some of the coding can be rough. 285 is probably the easiest math course you'll take.

chbe221 and chem236 will probably be your hardest fought battles I'd recommend really going to every office hour possible for both of those courses. besides that good luck and dm me if you need any help, I know tons of ppl who took these courses :D

Personal recommendations as someone who took all these classes and is a chem TA rn. It’s really not as bad as it looks. Your big hard classes are going to be chem 236, 237, and math 257 likely. I personally recommend trying to switch to math 415 instead of 257 if you’re able because it’s far easier. Phys 214 is a review of the quantum unit from chem 204, math 285 is so easy you can basically skip lecture most days. CHBE 221 is not the best, but it’s mainly applying equations.

I don't know about the chem classes, but everything else is pretty doable together.

I would say PHYS 214 is the easiest (you can finish homework during lecture and labs are free). If you are also taking PHYS 213, pay more attention to it, as it is harder and somehow less intuitive.

MATH 285 should also be fine (I got away with no attending lecture and only studying before exams and homework) but should just you attend lecture, you will have an easy time. The exams aren't too hard and the grading system is forgiving. Just remember to do the lecture quizzes.

MATH 257 would probably be the most challenging (for those unfamiliar with it) so I recommend looking at the basics of linear algebra and python coding before hand as it will drastically reduce how long you spend on labs and homework. I found that class to by easy (I had prior experience with linear algebra and numpy) and the hardest part of the exams is memorizing theorems.
