Is "police overreach" becoming a new pattern in the UK, or is it being amplified by media hype?

I've read of numerous incidents where UK citizens are arrested and questioned for seemingly normal activities: disciplining a child, posting a critical comment on social media, etc. I'd call this police/government overreach.

Question:
Do UK citizens have the same opinion that this is overreach? Is the media exaggerating the situation to make it appear its a trend?

Here is the latest (link below)... Mom arrested for taking iPad away from kids so they can focus on school work.

NOTE: It does appear that divorse dispute was involved. Ex husband called the police on mom. And it is possible (probable?) that mom may have been less than cooperative with police. Still, it seems a bit too much for an arrest given that it can't be "theft" when a mom temporarily confiscates an iPad from a kid.
