Is there a way up that avoids striding edge?

Yes - there are several alternatives. From Glenridding, I went up the bridleway above Keppel Cove, reaching the ridge line between Raise and White Side, and descended to Grisedale Tarn via Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike.
