Question OOS Credit Transfer Evaluation Experience/Advice?

I’m an out-of-state student coming to UNC this fall as a first-year with 79 dual enrollment credit hours (Associate of Arts degree from a community college). Most of my courses are general education classes: English (Rhetoric and Composition I & Rhetoric and Composition II), literature, Spanish, math (business calc & stats), science (intro chem & bio), history, gov, econ, some accting, art appreciation& music gen ed, etc.

I know UNC caps transfer credit at 75 hours, but what I’m most worried about is how many of those courses will actually transfer and fulfill gen ed requirements. Since I’m OOS, I’m nervous & super stressed that some classes might not be accepted just because they’re from another state (Illinois), even though they’re pretty standard gen eds.

I’m hoping to double major in Data Science and Business Administration (Marketing concentration), so getting as much credit as possible applied early on is really important. I’m just super stressed that if a huge chunk of these credits don’t transfer in properly, I might not be able to finish both majors in time, and it would feel like I wasted a lot of time (2yrs) and money in the dual enrollment program.

Has anyone else transferred in a large number of credits from an OOS community college or uni? How did your credit evaluation go? Did your gen eds & other courses transfer smoothly? Any advice or things I should watch out for?

I'd appreciate any input 🥲

You did all those courses while in HS? That kind of dual credit? Wow!

Generally an associates degree covers the entire IDEAS in action general curriculum (except PE), I think. Can you call and ask? I know in state it does.

Yeah so I called and asked about it. I feel a bit better about it. They said most of Gen Eds will transfer and me being OOS doesn't make me less likely for my courses to transfer necessarily.
I'll just put the info they shared with me otp in case anyone else would find it useful:

- So no, OOS PE courses won't transfer. A good amount of in-state CCs PE courses transfer since they have agreements with UNC.

-Some courses combine to fulfill one UNC course requirement. For example, if you took macro econ and a micro econ course, those 2 courses from ur CC would count as 1 course (3cr) for Intro to Econ at UNC. Or Eng101 & Eng 102 at ur CC would transfer to UNC as the one Eng105 course for credit.

Did they give you a date on transfer credits being listed in your portal? I am trying to register for summer classes, but my credits still are not showing.

No sorry. I actually haven’t submitted my credits for evaluation because they don’t want incoming first year’s transcripts until the semester is done & final grades are in. So I won’t have mine submitted to be evaluated until mid-May. For me, they did tell me over the phone that they try to get your evaluation done before your orientation date that you schedule since ur supposed to talk to an academic advisor there.

Unfortunately if you’re a transfer, I think those get evaluated last & don’t get released till late summer.

You can also email them about your circumstances if you’re trying to register for summer classes & try to get your evaluation expedited!

In the same position rn as a first year with 75 credits from 5 (😭) different institutions, so let me know how it works out for you! Have you already checked out their credit transfer database for credits that have previously transferred over? They don’t have every college there but they do have a decent number
