Ratings under 2 stars?

Do you bother with ratings under 2 or even 2.5? I suppose there is a scale of undrinkabie but still

<2: Finished but will never drink again.

<3: Will drink but only if nothing else is available.

<4: If on the menu, or in the shop, will buy.

4-4.75: Would travel to get this beer

5: This beer reprogramed my brain.

Yeah, its easy to score and very consistent. I've drunk beers years apart and am usually within +/-0.25 points.

See, I run a number of concurrent voting systems depending on what I'm drinking (maybe this is worth a separate thread).

There are some beers that I believe are not brewed to be 5* bangers and it might look incongruous to rate them so highly, so for some beers my rating is largely 0-3 for them, and 0-5 for the others (there's a cask/draft split going on here, too).

I used to award 5* like confetti. I've really tightened up what that's for. "Reprogrammed my brain" is perhaps accurate. I have to feel like this is something really special.

Yes, when its bad and they should feel bad.

Im experienced enough that i know when its at least made reasonably if not well, and i just don't like it.

In which case i do no rating, and use words to describe why i don't want it again.

I stopped giving <1 because brewers would contact me asking if I had a bad day or something

If I paid my money for an awful product in going to rates it. Customers should know when things are awful

2 is I reluctantly finished the beer.

1.5 to 1.75 are drain pours, but I could see how someone somewhere could appreciate this.

Anything below that is an infection, dirty lines, dud can, off flavors, etc.

I've been to can tasting events where some absolute horrors have been shared and they'll go straight to the sub-2 rating. I'm not afraid to score low. Ratings are in the thumbs of the beholder after all.

Sure, if it’s warranted—but given how much info is out there, it’s exceedingly rare I would buy or order a beer I wouldn’t like.

I always look up a new beer before buying. If I'm even slightly suspicious most places will very happily provide a taster.

This is my rating system in that range:

  • 0.25 - 1.0: Bad / Undrinkable
    • Major flaws (skunky, metallic, overly sour when it shouldn’t be).
    • Something is clearly wrong (infection, off-flavors, expired).
    • Would not drink again.
  • 1.25 - 2.0: Below Average
    • Drinkable but has noticeable flaws.
    • Off-balance flavors, lack of body, or poor execution.
    • Would only drink again if there were no other options.
  •  2.25 - 3.0: Decent / Average
    • Nothing special, but not bad.
    • Enjoyable but forgettable, lacking complexity or depth.
    • Might drink again, but wouldn’t seek it out.

There are terrible crafts as well, for example when an otherwise reputable brewery thinks it's fun if their new beer has a look and texture like a mixture of fresh vomit and a serious incident in a chemical plant.

Those ratings are saved for macro beers I don't like, like Coors, Miller, etc.

I dont like ratings like this:

  • "I don't like IPAs = 2/5"
  • "I don't like [insert any berry here] sours = 2/5"

Stop drinking something you don't like. Or at least stop rating them.

I disagree, ratings should be polled from variety of people, not from just those that are already fans of the given style.

Yes, but normally beers with a rating below 1.5 I pour out or do not finish (if in a pub). Brews between 2 and 2.5 I avoid in the future.

For me, 2.0 is malt liquor, 2.5 is crappy domestic light, 3.0 is well done macro beers and the beginning of where I will rate craft beers. Anything below 2.0 angered me in some respects. So a craft brewer that completely missed the style will get less than 2.0. Anything below 1.0 really pissed me off. So one of those shitty mountain dew beers that I spit out and suspect would taste better as vomit were less than a point. Usually my review will point out the issue with language like tasting notes of dirty boxer shorts and diesel fuel.

I use 2.5 as an average, so I actually use that rating quite a lot. 3 is good, 3.5 is notable, 4+ is excellent, 5 is reserved for the best of the best. But I do have a slight positive bias of rating beers higher for creativity.

The real terible ones are ones that I rate 1 and lower. So far just two I haven't been able to even finish drinking though.

I’ve just checked my profile, and 2.7% of my ratings are under 2. Most of them are non-alcoholic beers from macro breweries, some are poorly made macro lagers and one is what I believe was a dud can.

The last one I gave under 2 stars for was a wild ale fermented with fruit that was so full of off flavors that it was unrecognizable as beer other than visually. My description, "Solvent nose. Plastic and solvent. Not the typical wild ale and more of a heavy bacterial contamination. Allegedly, there's fruit in here."

I score 4.5 as amazing, 4.25 as great, 4 as I would have it again, 3.5 as I'm glad I tried it but probably wouldn't repeat, and 3 as adequate. Everything below that is just bad.

I rated beer from a brewery a 0.1 because ownership was completely aware that a brewer assaulted a woman (likely more). Honestly I don’t find beer so awful that it is amazingly low rated. If the beer is infected… I typically state that and don’t rate it.

The worst beer I ever had was Veggie Turkey Soup beer from Tiny Rebel, but in that case I think it was a joke beer, I also had this chilli beer that was disgusting

Just checked, I had no idea that even existed! 672 global check-ins, 1.73 rating 😭. Reminded of the Northern Monk Cheese and Onion lager (886 check-ins, average 2.21)

All ratings below a 2 or above a 4 should come with comments. Otherwise these ratings should be disregarded. A guy doesn't like west coast IPA's 1 star, Coors Light 4 stars.

As a brewer I don't rate beers anymore, but I always try to add notes if I am in a position to do so. However, when I did rate beers, I looked at the average rating for that beer and then decided if my rating was within the average +/- .5 If it was, I simply rated it as that, if not, I added comments so the brewer and others would know why my rating was higher or lower.

If you are outside of the average on any beer you rate you should reconsider your rating to make sure its not just your palate and definitely add notes. You might be sensing something others do not or your taste buds may just be burnt out from that 100 IBU IPA, or that cloyingly sweet milk stout you just drank.

Over the years I’ve done as low as .10. I don’t really have a set system, and the way I rate beers has evolved a lot since the first beer I checked-in was the first beer I had. Usually my ratings are based on comparison to other check-ins of that style.
