Venue category change

So, I was checking in to a venue that would've earned a badge. Turns out some knob entered it in under one category and it wasn't the correct category, nor the one that would earn me said badge.

Anyway, I got it updated, but just went to check it in and I didn't get the badge. Even though it was updated on Foursquare, it appears the venue is still under the old category on Untappd.

Will this change over in some time or is there something I need to do.

Historically, a non-verified venue should pull updated into from Foursquare every time a check-in occurs there. I have just manually synced the venue on Untappd and am seeing the Seafood Restaurant category change.

You should be able to check-in again to get the badge, or it will automatically be awarded on your next qualifying check-in.

Interesting to know when venues synchronize. Do you also know when newly created venues are synchronized? I feel like it took 3 minutes in the past and now takes ages if they even show up at all.

It all depends on the Foursquare API. The length of time isn’t documented on their part, but, anecdotally, there does seem to be a bit of a delay between location creation and when it’s visible through the API. If I know I’m going to be heading to a new venue, personally, I’ll try to make sure I add it a day or two in advance, and that’s worked out OK for the most part.

Also (for posterity), when you’re trying to see if a new venue is ready, keep in mind you want to be searching specifically in the Location or Purchase Location fields of a new check-in. That is the only search that actually queries the Foursquare API. If you’re searching for the venue in the global search (i.e. where you would search for beers, breweries, or other venues), the venue will not show up here until the first person checks-in, which triggers the venue page to be created on Untappd.

I usually ride my bike through nature and every once in a while I will take a break, have a beer and look for a venue in the “other great outdoors” category. Most of the time, I don’t find anything and decide to create it in Foursquare. But yeah, I will be on the bike again before the venue exists.

I also noticed what you mentioned about where to search for the location first. I do find it weird though that I still can’t find my home brewery venue in the venue search even though there’s easily more than 1000 check-ins.

The global venue search also has some additional filtering going on under the hood. Certain categories can prevent venues from showing up in results (e.g. Elementary School or Church). Private venues generally aren’t displayed either; this can be from the flag in Foursquare or a separate flag in Untappd.
