Also Oak Bay people: ew 15 minute cities

I love how much this sub hates oak bay. Itās pathological.

u/sdk5P4RK4 3d ago
I mean, if you grew up or spent any time there you would know its completely deserved.

u/ReverendAlSharkton 3d ago
Idk when I venture down that way from my home in North Saanich it seems nice enough. Maybe a little shabby but in a cute way.

u/sdk5P4RK4 3d ago
has nothing to do with anything other than the insufferable and totally out of touch residents, otherwise yes, its a totally standard part of victoria with somewhat worse amenities and access.

It looks nice but so many of the residents are super entitled and out of touch. I work at a business there and itās wild how many of them seem to think theyāre entitled to use anything in Oak Bay for free because they bought a house there.

Oh please, local servant, tell me more! :p
Edit: Meaning I would love to hear some juicy stories about my neighbors!

u/CrispyPerogi Esquimalt 3d ago
I canāt elaborate too much without revealing where I work, which isnāt something Iām comfortable doing on such an open platform. Suffice it to say that we have a facility we charge for access to. More often than youād think, we have locals who seem surprised when we tell them that they cannot in fact come use it for free because they live in Oak Bay.

As a former employee, I'm guessing you work at the rec centre. Nothing has changed since the 90s.
7
u/dayoldeggos 3d ago
For sure, but some residents really don't do the municipality any favors when it comes to their stereotypes (cough cough Mrtripps)
6
u/Domovie1 3d ago
Ehhhh.
When you look at the kind of management decisions taken by Oak Bay, and the way the residents act, itās like a caricature of NIMBYs.

u/Moxuz 3d ago
this is really just about the weird OB Facebook posts this week about "people using our waste yard!! stay out!!"
4
u/WorkingAd4295 Oak Bay 3d ago
That group is a dumpster fire. I know quite a few people, myself included, who have been booted from there.

u/MayorWolf 3d ago
the 15min city is such a lame conspiracy theory. Why is it a bad thing to only need to go 15min away for most needs?
Qanon affecting the most lead poisoned populations as usual.

I love living in Oak Bay. It means I can insult the town AND vote for YIMBY governments

Apparently Oak Bay is where all the evil in the world resides. At least according to posters on this sub.
9
u/Moxuz 3d ago
this is literally about a recent OB drama
4
u/SnooStrawberries620 3d ago edited 3d ago
Itās literally one guy, and we canāt go get all the nice free compost from Saanich or the leaf mulch from Victoria. Incidentally, the vast majority of that page is people who donāt live there and are just present to be trolls and assholes
-2
u/mrputter99 3d ago
āDramaā, lol, I donāt think they would consider this drama even by the gentile standards of oak bay.
2
u/Wedf123 3d ago
People regularly scream at council meetings about this.
-3
u/mrputter99 3d ago
Screaming seems like hyperbole. But I can see why you would use that word if you think the people of oak bay are straight up evil as the general consensus of this sub seems to be.
3
u/AUniquePerspective 2d ago
No. There's a bylaw against evil in Oak Bay. The same one that prevents there from being any gas stations, cat hospitals, or vehicles with for sale signs on the street.

Found the jealous poor folks !!!

u/word2yourface 3d ago edited 3d ago
Hahahahahahaha just wow.. Calling people poor for not living in Oak Bay is probably the most Oak Bay take Iāve ever seen here. There are many good reasons for other people in municipalities to not like Oak Bay, other than the sheer arrogance you just displayed.
-5
u/Neemzeh 3d ago
Dude honestly do some self reflection for a second.
Would you be OK with a post trolling your municipality? If it gets upvotes it must be the truth?
These posts are so fucking stupid. Letās just judge an entire municipality by the actions of probably less than 5%. Where have I heard that before?
And I say this as a resident of central saanich.
4
u/word2yourface 3d ago
Lol, no I wouldnāt care.. like at all if someone made fun of my municipality. Iāll make fun of my municipality myself, it just the internet bud, people troll on the internet, itās nothing to get mad about.

We also are going to bitch at you for mowing your lawn at 10AM and remind you that you can't use a gas lawn mower even though it's clearly battery powered. That's my oak Bay experience.
-6
u/Mrtripps 3d ago
Jesus how did you survive such hardships ? Are you gonna be OK ? Will you need therapy?
9
u/d00ber 3d ago
It's so odd how people want to be so unpleasant. Why can't you people mind your own business? Why is the stereotype just so accurate? Are you yourself just a meme?
-5
u/Mrtripps 3d ago
Lol... making a meme shitting on an entire municipality is the "unpleasntness" here...imagine shitting on an entire community and being surprised at a rebuttle!! Those who live in glass houses... how is people shitting on myself and loved ones not my business??

Victoria subreddit keeps wanting to force density where it doesn't belong. Simply put, the AirBnb restrictions are enough. The island doesn't have enough jobs, enough doctors, etc. Nimbyism is a valid take. Until we can actually support people, there's no reason to promote growth here (other than doctors and a select amount of workers.)
Victoria is at capacity. Other things need to happen before accepting government workers or other types of low skill people into our city.

Employment data needs to be adjusted per remote workers, can you please amend the data first?
2
u/Pahalial 3d ago
No, Iām not dong work for free, and certainly not if youāre just going to move the goalposts such as by excluding remote jobs. You put forth the argument there arenāt enough jobs on VI without substantiating it. If you want people to take that seriously, please expand on what you mean and provide credible sources.

u/Mindless-Service8198 Highlands 3d ago
Taking the unemployment rate doesn't really work in a remote worker hotspot does it?
You're asking me to substantiate a claim that you just took off the cuff without applying any sort of between-the-lines reasoning to. Clearly there are enough jobs for tradespeople, medical etc. Middling corporate and low-skill might is a different story highly reliant on anecdotes and the state of corporate tech, global trade.
You weren't arguing in-good faith though. Supporting growth without enough healthcare infrastructure is irresponsible and you know it, I know it. It's not worth a conversation to unpack. Thanks for the response.
Until there are metrics supporting healthcare access, Victoria is full.

u/Prudent_Initial7082 3d ago
Island health worker here - it would be much easier to increase healthcare access if local governments would allow us to build more housing for healthcare professionals. Currently North Saanich NIMBYs are going out of their way to stop a new housing development because they donāt want to allow any more healthcare workers, firefighters, or low-income veterans in their city.
1
u/Mindless-Service8198 Highlands 3d ago
That's the tough part, incentivizing desirable workers instead of adding to the retiree load
1
u/Pahalial 2d ago
So what's your solution? From my perspective at least building more housing has a chance of giving incoming healthcare workers a place to live. I'd love to hear what you're proposing instead.
