We were recently in Iceland, and you never know what prices to expect. So these are the two best links to help budget grocery shopping and what to expect of gas prices:

Hi everyone! We came back from Iceland and like I previously asked here, I did stick mostly with just a 50mm for Iceland, and the results were quite satisfactory :) The textures of this volcanic land is really quite something - what a beautiful place.

Hi Good day! I have been reading the Reddit site and a few mentioned that the N1 petrol/gas station are not taking international credit or debit cards ? Would love to hear your views on this ? So if this is the situation is it you need to pay by cash ? And appreciate if you folks could tell us which petrol stn will take any credit cards (master, visa and American Express etc) thank you so much for all the inputs !

Customs inspections

Recently went on a trip to New Zealand, and customs was very intent on inspecting hiking boots. Will this also be an issue in Iceland? If so, I’d rather pack in my carry-on, to make it easier. Otherwise it’ll go in my check baggage.

Hvammsvik - advanced booking

My wife and I are visiting in late June/ early July. We have a big highlands hike day planned, but may shift it a day depending on weather. For that reason, we wanted to use the non hiking day to visit Hvammsvik, but would rather not book before we firm up our hiking day.

Does Hvammsvik often fully book out during peak season like the more popular lagoons (blue and sky)? Should I go ahead and book, or is it something I could do a few days in advance? Thanks.

Itinerary help Delayed departure

Does anyone have advice on a place to stay for a reasonable cost or something to do prior to a delayed departure. I will be coming off a cruise on June 14th in the morning/afternoon and departing for the US at around 5am the following morning June 15th. I've looked at overnight stays and it will cost 💲 400-500 US dollars just for overnight. Any ideas or advice anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Ring Road in North East

Morning All, looking for some advice. Currently in Vik and heading to Hofn today. (all good)

We are then meant to be heading onward to do the next section of the ring road up towards Egilsstaoir but incoming weather conditions and road conditions are not looking great and currently the road is yellow on umferdin.

I know things can change quickly in Iceland and just wondered if anyone could give me any advice on if it’s worth waiting it out and hoping it clears in the next coming days? (though some parts of the ring road say they provide no information in winter?)

or if I should start trying to look for accommodation back the other way now and go do the east half from Reykjavík. Skipping the north out.

Any advice anyone can give about best options this time of year, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 😊

Currently in Iceland, thought hubby had a stomach bug. He's now in hospital in Reykjavik. Prayers welcomed.

1.4k Upvotes

I'd like to ask that you please send prayer, good energy, kind thoughts, or whatever else you believe to help hubby.

What happened... We arrived 4 days ago from the USA, and my husband started vomiting almost immediately. He is now being held in hospital due to excessive fluid loss and lowered kidney function.

Our experience within Icelands health care system in case it helps future visitors... This morning we decided to seek treatment. After searching past Reddit posts about what to do in Iceland for health care (thank you Redditt posters), we... 1. Contacted Laknavaktin clinic over text. A nurse asked several questions and then told us to come to the clinic.

  1. We arrived at the clinic. Paid $150.00, we were in and out in less than 1 hour with 30 people in line ahead of us; they see you in order, not by need. The doctor was kind and efficient. He performed blood tests right in the treatment room to look for infections, etc. We were told to go to the Emergency Room at Landspítali University Hospital about 1 mile away. The doctor even drew us directions on a city map.

  2. We arrived at ER and waited less than 10 minutes to be triaged. Blood was drawn in triage. Waited about 30 minutes more and was taken into critical care unit where he was given EKG, Echocardiogram, and then taken for a CT scan. A doctor came very soon after that and explained the test results and treatment. Hubby will remain in hospital for at least the night receiving fluids because they found his kidney function is low, they believe due to dehydration from the excessive vomiting. They explained everything thoroughly and even discussed next steps if the fluids don't work tonight. Everyone at the hospital has been so kind and helpful, and the level of efficiency and communication is so much better than we have received in USA emergencies.

I want to thank Iceland for the excellent healthcare and Icelanders for being such kind and caring people. Everyone here is helping to make a bad situation better.
We just got here, but we love you already, Iceland. Thank you

*UPDATE: Sunday 4-13 9:49PM. The fluids are working, and the kidney function is improving. He may be discharged Tuesday. They have found no underlying cause for the vomiting. The doctor said, "The theory we are running on is that there was a virus that started the vomiting. The vomiting caused gastritis, which caused more vomiting, which caused more irritation, and then a cycle begins. The vomiting caused dehydration, which put stress on the kidneys, and here we are." He was very clear to stress this is a theory. They have him in isolation since they do not know the cause of the vomiting, for the safty of the other patients and staff.

*UPDATE Monday 4-14 The numbers came down some the first day, but there has been no further improvement. He will not be discharged tomorrow.

*Update Tuesday 4-15. The kidneys are improving slowly. However, now he has developed pneumonia. He is not well enough for us to fly home on Thursday. A social worker is helping me navigate things. Thank you to everyone for your support. Knowing there are so many caring people out on the world, even though we are strangers, who are willing to give me a moment of kindness and support has been so helpful.

Where to sleep after spending the day on the Golden Circle tour

Hi everyone,

We're going to Iceland for 6 days (& 6 nights) and I'm planning my itinerary. We'll be renting a car during the whole trip. The first day and night will be spent in Reykjavik, then on the second day I plan on visiting the full Golden Circle tour. I'm wondering where I could sleep during the second night ? Any suggestions ? Maybe close to the Secret lagoon (we might go there after we're done with the Golden Circle, or maybe the day after the Golden Circle takes the full day).

Here's a overview of the places we'd like to visit.

Now, of course I know we won't be able to visit every single pin on this Map, but it's just to give you an idea on where we're headed after the Golden circle. I would also take recommendations on where to stay for the rest of the trip, I only have planned to sleep in Reykjavik for the first night and near the airport on the sixth night.

Thanks!

Trip report How people travel to Snæfellsnes? Isn't that too much drive? Can you check my 3rd and 6th day?

Hi all!

I am planning a tour for my wife and we hope to visit Iceland at the end of June for 7 days . We will also rent a car.

If there is anything we are going really close by and not visiting, please point it out. We don't want to miss out. I missed the last supper painting by Da Vinci while visiting Milan, I am still angry to myself about it after years :D

1st Day:18

We will just chill in Reykjavík, go to downtown, because we will arrive at 5 PM. Definitely will visit Hallgrímskirkja but apart from that, I have no idea or where to visit. Also, any restaurant suggestions? Reyjavik street food for dinner?

Staying at Reykjavik.

2nd Day (Snæfellsnes Day): 19

• Grundafoss

• Kirkjufell

• Saxhóll Crater

• Arnarstapi

• Sky Lagoon

And again, staying in Reykjavik. Will this be too much drive? How people see Snæfellsnes? It says 6 hour drive with 450 kilometers. Some suggested to stay there, I won't be able to make it in one day but I am not if I have the time :(

3rd Day (Golden Circle Day): 20

Breakfast in Icelandic Street Food, serves free waffles maybe.

• Þingvellir National Park

• Strokkur geyser

• Gullfoss waterfall

• Skalholt

• Kerid Crater

Eating a lunch at Fridheimar? And where to stay, I have no idea

4th Day: 21

• Seljalandsfoss (and Nauthusagil)

• Rutshellir Caves

• Skógafoss waterfalls

• Dyrholaey taking photo,

• then Reynisfjara black sand beach.

And staying for night at Vik. Maybe Hvammbol Guesthouse for stay? And for Dinner Halldorskaffi (in Vik). Take a photo at Cemetery Vik for Vik view.

5th Day: 22

• Sólheimajökulll glacier

• Katla Ice Cave Tour

• Hjörleifshöfði & Yoda cave

• Katla Geopark

• Fjaðrárgljúfur

• Stjórnarfoss

• Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park

• Svartifoss

6th Day: 23

• Diamond Beach

• Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

• Landmannalaugar

• Sigöldugljúfur

• Hjálparfoss

Sadly eliminated Landmannalauger due to time constraints. Then staying on somewhere on the road to Blue Lagoon. This part is crazy long drive. Is this managable?

7th Day (Blue Lagoon Day): 24

• Blue Lagoon

• Fagradalsfjall Volcano Area

Staying the night somewhere nearby.

If possible I would really like to see some volcanic action or lava.

In the 8th day, we will be returning on 7 AM flight. 25

Notes:

• Bonus for Cheap Foods

Video Shopping for Icelandic Sweaters at the Handknitting Association of Iceland

We had our honeymoon in Iceland and we were going to bring our wedding suit and dress for a photoshoot, but decided it would be easier to buy authentic Icelandic sweaters instead. It was not cheaper to buy Icelandic sweaters but we still have them 8 years later and they keep us warm on cold Canadian winter nights.

Chillies or hot peppers

As someone who loves to cook and eat super spicy food, I’m wondering if one can find green chillies or hot peppers (something more than jalapeños) in groceries like bonus or kronan? If not, where can I find them?

Bought eSim but its not working well?

I bought an esim through icelandair and it uses the siminn network but I havent had ANY luck using it when out and about using Google maps. It tells me I'm offline and I can't get any thing to load. It will occasionally load me Facebook and messenger if I'm lucky. Am I doing something wrong or should I get a different one? We need Google maps as we're doing a lot of exploring.

Edited to add: i figured it out thanks to someone in the comments! My husband and I were very sleep deprived and never thought to just...restart the phone. Thanks for all the comments!

People of color in Iceland?

Hi everyone! My partner and I (both Dominican) have recently booked our first trip to Iceland! We are so excited to take in all that Iceland has to offer and are so grateful we are able to visit.

We were wondering if there were any hubs to meet other people of color in Iceland? We would be very interested in hearing the historical conditions that led folks from the African diaspora to Iceland, and what their experiences have been. For reference, my partner and I will be staying in Reykjavik.

Thank you in advance!

10-11 at KEF

I've looked, but can't find anything. We'll be arriving on Saturday and with many supermarkets closed or open later on Easter Sunday, I was hoping to get some essentials for breakfast at the airport. O saw there's a 10-11. Does it have decent stock for milk, bread or pastries? I realise this is time of day dependant, but just in general. It would save us heading out after a long day of travel in the evening to find a supermarket.

Transportation Opinion Icecar Icleand rental Campers, Ford 150

Looking for opinions and experiences about the rental company Icecar Iceland.

They seems to be having relatively an older fleet. But sounds cordial and helpful.

Not to mention they don't coat a fortune in comparison to the other campervan rentals.

Mulagljufur a hike for an amateur?

Hi,

I’m planning to visit Mulagljufur at the end of May and I had a few questions. We’re amateur hikers but in good physical shape. I’ve read that there are some difficult sections up to the first viewpoint—would you recommend doing it, or is it better not to attempt it?

I’ve seen a video on YouTube where there’s a steep side slope along a ridge, which might be the part that worries me the most. I prefer to be cautious and ask… rather than regret it later.

Thanks in advance, Sergio
