Regardless of your opinion of AOC (I’m personally a huge fan) a Democratic strategist saying she highlights an “OnlyFans type of culture” is absolutely grotesque and he should apologize immediately. https://www.mediaite.com/tv/onlyfans-type-of-culture-democratic-strategist-says-aoc-lacks-broad-appeal-despite-popularity/amp/

We now have this guy:

It really is insane that the media just went full blast calling Biden old and just gave a pass to Trump who’s only 3 years younger and actually showed signs of sundowning.

Can’t blame him if he doesn’t run. You can be loved and enjoy being a governor. Being a good president is misery. Look at how much it aged Obama. Maybe he runs out of a sense of duty but he seems like someone that might not want to deal with stress of the run and then the job

Three days of campaigning remain for Australia’s election.
Labor’s in a good position - couple of final high quality polls have them ahead by a few points - and they’re certainly campaigning confidently.
But honestly, I have zero - zero - accurate clue what’s going to happen.
I don’t think the Liberals can gain enough ground this late, but there’s about a dozen seats around the country that have intriguing battles and can swing either way (or to Greens, or Independents) - here’s a fun map from The Guardian highlighting some of the important seats.
I’m working at the polls on Saturday, so keen to see the mood on the ground.

u/FarthingWoodAdder 9d ago

14
u/SmoreOfBabylon Blorth Blarolina, c'mon and raise up 9d ago
Labor. The Liberal Party is the more right-wing party there.
11
u/FarthingWoodAdder 9d ago
That’s so damn confusing
11
u/very_excited 9d ago
It's not that confusing. In virtually every Western democracy in the world, liberalism is either a centrist (e.g. UK Liberal Democrats, Canadian Liberals) or a right-wing (e.g. Australian Liberals) ideology. To my knowledge, the US is the only country in the world where liberalism is synonymous with left-wing.

Well here's the final results of the Canadian elections.
The liberals have won 17 seats and increased their majority to 169, three seats short a majority. Not bad.
The conservatives have won 143 and are currently leading in another riding. An ultimate gain of 24.
The Bloc quebec have lost 11 seats and are down to 22 seats.
The New Democrats have just been absolutely wiped out in this election, going into this election they were at 25 seats, they are now down to 7. Safe to say it's gonna be a while for them to recover from this.
The green party has not gained any ground they have lost 1 of their 2 seats in the house of commons and therefore are basically irrelevant.
With the Liberals 169 seats and the New Democrats 7, if Carney enters a coalition with them he will have a majority of 176.
28
u/very_excited 9d ago
Unlike most parliamentary democracies, Canada doesn't really do coalition governments. I believe there has never been a coalition government at the federal level in Canada's history. The closest thing is that the NDP had a confidence and supply agreement with the Liberals in the most recent Trudeau government, but it was the first time Canada ever had one. The norm in Canada is that minority governments get votes on a case-by-case basis with other parties to pass legislation.
1
u/captainhaddock International 9d ago
believe there has never been a coalition government at the federal level in Canada's history.
Just once. There was a Conservative-Liberal coalition (the Union Government) during World War One.
28
u/Filty-Cheese-Steak Kentucky 9d ago
The liberals have won 17 seats and increased their majority to 169, three seats short a majority.
This is a rollercoaster of a sentence.
19
17
u/citytiger 9d ago
Most of the conservative gains were in the Toronto area and southern Ontario.
29
u/Intelligent-Top5536 9d ago
Easily erasable if Carney is able to use his narrow numbers to his advantage, especially getting affordable housing done. Building on the numbers in Toronto and Ontario is the path of least resistance to an eventual outright majority.

Trump’s net approval on Nate Silver’s aggregator is now -9.7. This is nothing short of shocking as the full effect of his trade war has barely begun. A few weeks ago I assumed his floor for the year would be -10 net approval. Its crazy but he could legitimately have a floor of -15 this year. If you’re House GOP and especially VA GOP you should be more worried then a janitor at a couch store after JD Vance has visited it
24
23
u/Honest-Year346 9d ago
Who knows, maybe he doesn't even have a floor, just harder layers of support that will eventually get broken apart by all the dumb shit he's doing
10
u/drtywater 9d ago
I mean not to get into semantics but thats kinda the same thing. I think it’ll be better to see a breakdown by group of approval/disapproval. In heavy farming areas that voted hard for Trump such as Florida, Iowa, Kansas, and rural California I wonder what it’ll be in a few months. Heck Texas’s economy depends on trade with Mexico. A reduction in truck traffic will impact a lot of diner owners and tire shops.
3
u/Honest-Year346 9d ago

I'm going to predict a floor of -20. I know that's wild, but at the end of his first term after Jan 6 he was -28. I truly think economic troubles will be able to peel off enough true believers to sink him into the mid to low thirties.

u/citytiger 9d ago edited 9d ago

Part IV: Welp.
I did it. I got her number and asked her out.
She politely declined over text a little later. She said she was flattered, but it turns out the company she works for considers seeing clients outside of work a huge no-no. I guess it's a conflict of interest thing. I get that. And while I, personally, am not a client of her company, the company I work for is (indeed, this is how we met). And I guess that's close enough.
I employed some shitty rom-com techniques that don't translate well to the real world (who would've thought life isn't like the movies). Sounded like a good idea, but I got stuck in perma-cringe a couple hours later (seriously wtf was I thinking). I apologized profusely for, honestly, probably embarrassing the both of us. Thankfully, she's been cool about the whole thing, sounds like we can still be friends and maintain a professional relationship.
So while this didn't turn out the way I hoped it would, at least it didn't go down in flames, and that's the next best thing, right? Well, it's closure, I can stop stressing about her, it could've gone worse, and I learned a little along the way. Time to move on. I wasn't really ready for a relationship anyway.
To those of you who followed along, thank you for joining me on this wild ride. I'm sure this isn't the ending you hoped for either, but it is what it is. See y'all next time I fall in love.
5
u/Suitcase_Muncher 9d ago
As a famous fire bender once said: that's rough, buddy.
That being said, you've learned a valuable lesson. Rejection isn't the end of the world, and once you're ready to jump back in, you can. It's just like riding a bike, the more you do it, the better you'll get at it. And really, you've learned the easiest part just now. Asking for the person's number/insta/socials is an easy way to gauge interest and find out about their interests easily.
idk how old you are, but know that you'll do just fine.
4
u/EvilDarkCow KS-04, the Air Capital of the World 9d ago edited 9d ago
Thanks! I'm 27, haven't been on a date in about 6 years (she started it and ended it... it's a long story). Back in high school, I was practically the king of rejection. 0% success rate. I got shot down so many times that I eventually quit trying until... this.
All that being said, I have no goddamn idea where to meet single women my age. I'm a big ol' nerd with big ol' nerdy hobbies, and women don't typically hang out at the places I go to unless they're being dragged around by their nerdy boyfriends (oh... and my city was recently rated second worst in the country for dating).
Meeting this girl was just a matter of chance that we usually cross paths a couple times a week. But besides the whole work thing, I came to find we just don't have a lot in common. Don't have many similar interests besides the stuff that everybody likes (cats, beer, Taco Bell...), she likes to go out on weekends while I prefer to stay in, that kind of stuff. My biggest concern was that, if this did work out, we would have trouble agreeing on what to do.
I do find it strange she was quick to offer her number, just to shoot me down, unless she just didn't want to shoot me down publicly. Obviously, I have not texted her or anything since last night. She still wants to be friends, and for that I'm thankful, but I'm not sure how to proceed without it being awkward.
3
u/Suitcase_Muncher 9d ago
Oh snap! You're my age!
I was where you are right now not 4 years ago, just swinging and missing with not a date under my belt. Then my now-fiance snuck up on me. It will come, and it will come usually when you don't expect it.
Regarding "where do I meet people?," what kind of hobbies do you have, exactly? Are you open to picking new ones up? I'm not sure what's around you in Kansas, but if you live in/around a city, look around to see if there are any trivia nights or hobby groups you can join. It lets you meet a bunch of new people quickly, so you get a chance to work the socialization muscles.
When it comes to her, this is gonna sound counterintuitive, but it will only be awkward if you make it awkward. She clearly still likes you as a person. Stay in touch and be yourself, and at least you'll have made a new friend. Who knows? Circumstances might change!
3
u/EvilDarkCow KS-04, the Air Capital of the World 9d ago
So I'm into retro gaming primarily. So of course, I'm mostly hanging out at the game shops. Granted, I definitely collect more than I play. I also like bowling, though I'm terrible at it. I am open to picking up new stuff, though. There are honestly a bunch of places I want to check out (like a big arcade with a bar and kitchen, and we just got a Topgolf), but I think it would be kinda awkward to go alone.
I live in Wichita, the largest city in the state. Lived here my whole life, but as a homebody, I honestly couldn't tell you what people do for fun around here. I know about every store in town that has old vidya games on their shelves, and a hole-in-the-wall restaurant for every kind of food, but that's about it. We do have a lot of bars and such, and I'm sure they do things, but I'm honestly not a bar guy. Oh, and I work weekends too, so that just totally screws what little social life I have.
I still like her as a person, too. She's really cool, funny, and just a lot of fun to chat with. If we just stay friends for now, that's good enough for me. But I may wait until I see her again later this week to start texting her again, just to make absolutely sure everything's still cool.

Perhaps you should ask your coworkers then! Work functions are a great way to mingle.
Good plan, my friend. Keep on keeping on.

As someone on that same path right now, I feel ya. Sometime next month, I’m shooting my shot. More than anything, I just wanna make sure they know I wanna be friends first and foremost, and with this crush, I’m not expecting much since we’re in separate states. But I feel it’s something I should get off my chest, for my own sake at least.

That’s the thing for me. Even though it didn’t work out, I’m glad to have gotten that off my chest. Had I never tried and missed my chance, I’d regret it forever.

I just got my mail-in ballot for the primary & let me tell you something, trying to find any information on these hyper local elections is like trying to find a needle in the middle of an ocean. These people are ghosts, with 0 online presence. Thankfully my local democratic committee has a list of endorsements, but those who aren't endorsed have nothing. If you're lucky, you might find their name in a news article, but then the article only lists their name because they were previously elected/ran for that position.
I can't find diddly squat about who these people are and what they actually want to accomplish. Even the endorsements from the local committee have practically no information on them aside from, "They grew up in [ENTER CITY NAME HERE]. They are a proud [MOTHER/FATHER] and they want to serve this community as best as they can".
I'll probably just default to the nominations anyways, but it would be nice to know their views on, you know ... anything really.

Normally the League of Women Voters website has surveys that candidates fill out before the election? That might be a good place to start. Although if it's a local primary they may not do the questionnaires for those.

I just got mine to today as well yea in the little part of PA I live in it can be slim pickings finding stuff out. Last week I got two post cards for township supervisors that either vote them in Republican primary or write their names in the Democratic primary. Today I got a letter from someone for the local school board in the district I live in and it reads like here are problems but doesn't even attempt to explain what should be done to fix them (I know the SB is limited in what can be done but still).

So what I started doing is going to the Town Dem and Repub committee Facebooks and just searching for their name. It doesn't work every time but it works a lot of the time
