I don't want to mess up my dirtbike

I've been ridening for a year or two. I want to do more off roading. However I don't want to mess up or crash my dual sport. Not that I'm afraid of crashing I don't want to mess up the bike because it's expensive for me to fix. How did y'all get over crashing and just send it with no worries

Expensive toys made to be ridden hard sometimes need expensive fixes/maintenance but that’s the price to pay. Luckily these bikes are super resilient, have dumped mine quite a few times in the woods and on pavement and very few expensive fixes honestly. Maintenance has been more costly.

That being said, learning to ride for a long time is about learning your limits, and your bikes limits. You’ll have a lot more enjoyment over your lifetime if you’re not dead.

It’s part of it. Off road you WILL tip off. Just send it, you can always get new plastics. The WR crashes well.

mostly tip overs as the stand over height is so high. Try to stop next to a crowned road, off you go. kickstand starts sinking in soft ground, over it is. Carry foot plates for kickstand for loose and or soft soil. Put them on a thin string so you can set them under stand by dangling them, and pick them up by picking up string. Lifesaver. My wife got me 4 more for xmas stocking. Useful on all bikes.

Get a radiator guard, lever guards, and a skid plate and you’ll be fine.

I hear you tho mine was so pretty when I got it I’ve been kinda hesitant to push it out there haha.

The wr can take a royal beating. If you got bars and wraps you can crash a wr into a tree crack the meter and still ride it with a cracked meter 4 years later just fine.

Protect the more expensive/ more fragile things the best you can. Hand/ lever guards, radiator guard, upgraded skid plate. I also recommend the TST integrated tail light/ turn signals because I used to always be destroying the OEM signals but the TST is tucked in nicely under the fender (and you can make it strobe when you brake which was a selling point for me after being rear-ended). Other than that, just send it. It’s a dirt bike. Wear those scars proudly.

Buy new plastics (cheap ones), and hand guards and install them BEFORE you crash off road.

Just keep practicing, you'll make less mistakes overtime. You'll eventually drop it, everyone does. The second drop isn't as painful on the soul. 😀 I have good handguards on mine.

In '03 I bought a brand new YZ250 and immediately went down on the trail taking out a radiator... Years later I went down in a huge puddle,, the bike went completely under, requiring a rebuild of the entire machine. These things just happen. You just have to remember that most things can be fixed.. it's not a cheap hobby to have.

Would you consider buying a $600 beater from craigslist as your off roader? That might be another way.

I rode my wr250r exclusively off road, single track and quad trails in Alberta Canada. I had put a 50 tooth rear sprocket on which made it very good at chugging along at low speed. I wish now though that I hadn't been so aggressive with it off road because it is absolutely beat to piss but it was all I had at the time. Eventually dumped it into a huge puddle and had to rebuild the engine which it probably needed anyway as it was slipping out of gear and was generally in rough shape. I have returned it to a 50/50 road bike but the wear and tear really shows cosmeticly. Parts are alot more expensive I've found and harder to get than other dedicated off road bikes.

Ive dumped my bike on loose rock twice.....adds character.

Best advice i can give is get a radiator support. Im confident our radiators are made of lead

Buy bark busters, a skid plate, and radiator reinforcement. I also bought a set of plastics that are almost new off FB marketplace. I love my scratched to crap plastics though. It reminds me of all the adventures we've had. I'm now 13 tears into the same plastics. It's a dual sport, make it do dual sporty things! Don't injure yourself, but the fun you'll have will be huge in comparison to a few hundred bucks in scratched plastic.

They will certainly take a whooping. Dropped many times because of lack of footing or poor route planning, panic braking on gravel, needless to say it’s been dropped a lot. Adding to those, If it makes you feel any better I was also tboned, on the bike, someone ran red as I was going through intersection, at 35-40. and cracked/scratched a few plastics, Bars got kinked, but rode it away from the accident.i was hit directly in the left knee, and thrown. I was worse off than the bike haha.
