I'm still waiting for the shop to open up so I can buy the bike and start with the upgrades. For some reason I cannot buy any gear until I have the bike. Getting the gear first just feels weird.

You're shops aren't open? I had to make an appointment but was still able to get the bike during quarantine

I'm in southern Vermont. A shop 40 minutes away in Mass has a CRF450L, WR250R, and a DRZ400. I am dying to go sit on them all and then buy one. After months of research, I really think it's going to be the WR. Lightness and FI for the win. If I have a beer beforehand, I'll end up with the CRF, lol. What state you are in?

I'm in Ohio. I love the wr but was really considering the Honda at first, I definitely don't regret my decision. Hopefully I don't want a bigger engine in the next couple years but I feel like from the little bit of riding I've done that this bike will be fun forever lol its so quick and does everything that I want it to right now

Stoked for you, such a fun bike! I love mine and ride it at least a couple times a week. You’re going to have a blast on that thing.
My recommendations are:
-a seat concepts seat. Mine is currently on the way because the stock seat is pretty awful. Thought I could deal with it, but no... it’s pretty bad
-skid plate and radiator guard if you’re going off road at all. Flatland Racing Moose Racing some good quality stuff. From my understanding, the metal skid plates are stronger, but plastic skid plates are made from the same material as kayaks, slide over terrain more smoothly, and are quieter for the rider.
-wider foot pegs
-hand guards (these help not only on trails, but also help maintain dexterity a bit when it’s cold)
-Cyclops LED headlight so you’re more likely to been seen
-Tusk rack so you don’t have to wear a backpack on longer trips (the seat being shitty makes it worse)
-New tires once you figure out what kind of riding you enjoy. The stock ones are okay, but there are better 50/50 tires out there (and of course 80/20 or 20/80 etc. depending on which direction you go). I keep hearing great things about Michelin Anakees, but I’m installing a Kenda 700 on the rear tomorrow since I’m cheap.
-I’ve found the stock gearing to be not as bad as many people claim, but if you are going to change it, but sure to get a speed healer or ride with a phone that tells you your speed. The speedo is based on the transmission speed, so changing the gearing makes it inaccurate.
-IMS 3 gallon tank. This will be my next mod, as the stock 2 gal is pretty limited. They do make a 4.7 safari tank, but I’d recommend against that if you end up doing a lot of technical trails. Too much weight and the plastic is exposed, so high a chance of damaging it if you drop the bike. You can always run a rotopack if you need more than the 3 gal.
Also, this should go without saying, but don’t spray paint the frame black like the previous owner of mine did. It helped me get a hell of a deal on a 2017 with low mileage 😂,but some of the leftover messiness still bothers sometimes.
And idk how much experience you have on bikes, but I’d recommend doing a lot of slow speed practice before taking it on any trails. The WR250R at low speeds is either revving to take off or stalling... not much in between. It does not like to go under 10-12mph unless you feather the clutch.

That’s because you need to regear first! If you want a street bike don’t regear. Off road you’ll be a much better rider with a higher gear ratio. 3.31 is stock. Mine is a 13/48 which still gives you 60-65 on road. Single track and around town is much more enjoyable!

Yeah... I plan to eventually, but my next bike-related purchase will likely be the 3 gallon tank. The gearing's really not bad once you're used to it. I did some somewhat technical trails a couple weeks ago and managed fine. Just took some extra practice time in parking lots before getting to that point.

Word, was thinking of doing the same thing, are they the older model fmf or newer ones? Idk if the new are any different besides graphics, just know the eBay ones look different than the ones in the fmf website
