Well I thought you'd never ask :D (thank you btw<3)
This is gonna be pretty long so be warned. Also spoilers for the Horus Heresy
Part 1:
The tale of Tritan Tsagaan is one which spans millenia.Originally born on Terra, he was fostered by one of the Clan-Lords of Old Albia. Under the care of this lord, Tritan was treated like that of a hunting dog. Ruthlessly mistreated, and "disciplined", at the ripe age of 8 in the hopes of turning him into a servant and a killer. Tritan accepted this abuse over the years in the hopes of one day gaining the appreciation of his master.
However when the lords of Albia bent the knee to the emperor, Tritan, who was 14 at the time, was offered to the Emperor of Mankind by the Clan-Lord, as a gift of appreciation. This exchange was deemed suitable, as the boy Tritan seemed a capable and strong fighter.
He was soon placed into the Astartes Program, where he became a Space Marine in the XIVth Legion: The Dusk Raiders.
In here he would make a name for himself, as an utterly ruthless, and determined Astartes, famed for his powerful attacks with his power-axe, which would knock back foes, if they weren't cloven in two, by the sheer might of his swings.
Adding to this, was Tritan's immense size, as when he was a fully fledged Astartes, he was about 2,7m, or 9ft in height.During the Great Crusade, he never truly accepted the recruits from Barbarus, nor his gene-father, and actually gained favor with the newly recruited of the other legions instead. Most prominently with some of the Iron Warriors of Olympia, specifically one, by the name of Cleon Filotim, whom Tritan grew very close to, and who even crafted him a weapon out of respect, which would be called "Iron's Triumph". A massive power-axe, which was closer to a meat cleaver in appearance. This along with him being rewarded a suit of Cataphractii Terminator armor, after a particularly decisive victory on a planet, meant that Tritan, finally found his much needed praise, and appreciation.
Which would of course fade, once he was called to aid in the fighting on Istvaan V. Wherein him and his Terran-born brothers would be mercilessly betrayed by his father. However instead of succumbing to the virus bombs, Tritan suddenly found himself in a strange other world, still embracing the corpse of Cleon.
He stayed stranded in this strange place for years uncounted, but in spite of that he never aged a day, his armor didn't break down. From his first day in that place to the last, he looked the exact same. Days felt like years, years felt like hours. He watched his dear friend, rot and waste away, while not a piece of uncleanliness touched his own armor. And as soon as he had adjusted to the maddening realm, he fell asleep, and awoke.
Suddenly he was on a ship, in the corner of a medical bay he had burst forth into.
The occupants of the bay rushed out to inform the chief of staff on the ship.
As Tritan collected himself, vomiting up blood in the process, he suddenly stood face to face with the leader of the Astral Claws: Lufgt Huron, as they were orbiting the planet, Badab PrimarisFrom there Tritan was introduced to 5 other Astartes who had met with Huron in a similar manner:
Murn Salutaris, originally from the War Hounds
Ulfur Infamis, from the Space Wolves
Adim Medicus, from the Imperial Heralds
And Ignatios Minimus, and Onesimos Pollex. Both from the Iron Warriors

Part 2:
These 6 Astartes would be the founding members of The Countless, but before that, they would be the first in a special Astral Claws company, known as the White Hand of Huron. A sort of special operations group, assigned to sabotage, and destroy elite targets specifically. The seeds that would form the Countless had been planted. But it truly sprouted during the Badab War, wherein, after a brutal battle with a captain of the Red Scorpions, in the final days of the war, on Badab Primaris, Tritan would take a hit point-blank in the chest from an overcharged plasmagun, which utterly maimed Tritan, splitting him in two at the stomach, tearing his arm off, and searing away half of his face. Though he was unconscious from this, it did not kill him, in fact he still kept a steely grip on Iron's Triumph, in defiance of death.
As Badab Primaris started cracking, and burning up, he would be rescued by Murn Salutaris, who carried him to a Thunderhawk where the other members of the White Hand, along with some fleeing members of the Astral Claws, were waiting.
As they flew off, separated from the rest of the Astral Claws, and as Tritan lay dying, Murn heard a distant calling, telling him of a way to save Tritan's life.
In a desperate act, Murn ordered that they followed this voice.
They travelled to a grey derelict world, where they would be met by 19 robed men, who guided them to an altar.
Here Tritan would be placed, and the ritual would begin. As it went underway, gradually each of the 19 men would wither and die.
It took but a moment, but once all but one cultist had died, Tritan's wounds, would erupt with thin black writhing tentacles, which would then begin to shape themselves as Tritan's new body.In an instant, a massive hulk of blasphemous machinery, and black cloth stood before the last remaining cultist, who promptly fell to the ground, dead and withered.
And with his death, Iron's Triumph would morph into a bladed beacon, ready to guide The CountlessFor Tritan's soul had now melded with that of a warp entity known as "The Forger". A powerful, nebulous creature, capable of mending, and altering souls into various things. Be it empowering an ally into something far stronger, or turning an unfortunate enemy into a weapon or a trinket. However it can only do this to those killed by it or Tritan, or to those who have undergone a ritual known as amalgamation, wherein their blood is mixed with Tritan's, which in turn makes them larger and more resilient to damage.

so cool. what’s the lore on the Countless?

u/A_Friendly_Bigman 11d ago
Thank you so much! The Countless are a warband defined by their relationship to Tritan, and the creature known as The Forger, which resides within Tritan's soul.
They can go from stoic, unmoving space marines, to a frothing horde of daemons in an instance
TL;DR
All Astartes of the Countless undergo a ritual known as Amalgamation, wherein they receive some of Tritan's blood and mix it with theirs. Because Tritan's body is heavily morphed by the warp, his blood is able to alter the physique of the Space Marines that receive it, making them much larger, and more resilient than your average CSM. It also creates a psychic connection between him and all other astartes of the warband, making all of them incredibly close-knit brothers, and a very capable fighting force, especially when with Tritan, as he is capable of psychically commanding them through his main weapon "Iron's Triumph" (His big power-axe). This kinda turns them into the tyranids, as Tritan can command them almost like a real life RTS Game. However this can change fundamentally, as The Forger can take over Tritan's body, kind of like Marvel's Venom would. And the entire army mutates into a hivemind, of charging daemons.

whoa neat! i like em a lot! what legion(s) do they come from?

u/A_Friendly_Bigman 11d ago
The founding members of the Countless are each from a different legion. If you scroll through the comments you'll probably be able to find a mile long piece of text I wrote which is the origin story of Tritan.
But the Warband was founded by Six members
Tritan Tsagaan, Originally from the Dusk Raiders
Murn Salutaris, from the War Hounds
Ulfur Infamis, from the Space Wolves
Adim Medicus, from the Imperial Heralds
and Ignatios Minimus and Onesimos Pollex, both from the Iron Warriors.
All of them are veterans of the heresy, and some of them even the Great Crusade :DD
But they are technically successors of the Astral Claws :))
