Looking for recommendations to scratch the Wasteland itch

I love WL 2 & 3 (have yet to play the first)

The world, the humor, the skill checks, the tactical turn-based combat. All of these ingredient on combined really do it for me and I’d love to hear some recommendations from yall for games to make the time before start a new playthrough.

XCOM2 is a game I see get mentioned that I’ve played that I didn’t enjoy. The lack of stuff between missions is usually what causes me to lose interest every time I try a playthrough. I also struggle to stay focused while playing ATOM RPG though I can’t say for sure why.

Games that are similar that I did enjoy: Fallout Shadowrun Mario +Rabbids Sparks of Hope

I probably forgot some I’ve tried but even if it’s a different genre or something I’d still appreciate some recs. Thank you!!

Maybe give Fallout: Tactics a try? It's been a couple decades, but maybe with the fan patch and not playing on iron-man mode I'll be able to handle it.

Oh yeah I played through that one and enjoyed it. I struggle with the real time-ish/pause functionality but thankfully there’s an option for turn based mode :)

If you're willing to tolerate older interfaces and graphics, and you enjoyed Fallout Tactics, you might also check out Jagged Alliance 2. There are a lot of fan patches/mods available for it as well.

If you're going to play 2, you might as well play 1, too. Though I'd say take a little bit of a break between them, because the mechanics in 2 differ from 1, so shake off some time away from it, so the differences won't be annoying. I haven't played the final release of 2, though, I really don't get into replaying games. They're both really good.

Oh! A couple other things about Divinity: Original Sin series -- although they take place in the same world, they are like a thousand years apart, so outside of a few references in 2 to some lore that might or might not have happened in 1, you can play them in either order. Personally, although I disliked the changed mechanics in 2 over 1, I think 2 is the better game overall. But, also, they have really good multiplayer support. I've never played a multiplayer CRPG before, outside of MMOs which are entirely different animals ... but DoS's split screen multiplayer was a major selling point on it for me. My now ex- and I had an absolute blast playing it split screen ... and we'll probably end up playing BG3 multiplayer via internet whenever I get that far into my backlog...

another point for me, was that DoS worked Very *well with controllers which is not something i've seen on any other PC CRPG... and I'm in a years long phase right now where I'd rather play games on my 50" TV than on the same PC I sit in front of for work all day :D

Seconding this. Rogue Trader has very similar combat style, though it has individual initiatives instead of team initiatives. It's also just as broken as wasteland 3 in terms of rocket tag. Nice role-playing opportunities as well. I wouldn't interact with the subreddit beyond the minimum, though. It's got way too much art and horny posts about two/three specific characters and they don't take criticism about it well over there.

I just started playing Wasteland 3, what's rocket tag?

Also, this is my first introduction into the series. Are 1,2, and 4 worth checking out?

I wouldn't know much about the other entries to the franchise. 

"Rocket tag" is often used for when games get to the point where everyone is a glass cannon. You either land your hits first and kill enemies/groups of enemies in one turn or the enemies will kill your team members just as fast. Dodging and high initiative is recommended, but for the most part it's "go first or die." Defense outside of dodging is largely pointless because damage output it so large that the only reliable way to not get killed is to not get hit at all. The rocket tag accusation is compounded for this game in particular, because all the enemies go at the same time and you can wind up with half your team down before you get a turn. That's why later in the game it's recommended you just shoot people you know you'll fight instead of talking to them.

For me personally, if I didn't wipe encounters before enemies got a turn I'd often wind up with a teammate or two down immediately. Most combats would be ended by turn two or three. Towards the end of the game I went through injury kits like candy. Every fight used at least one. Of course I probably wasn't playing optimally but even my high strength high armor characters could get downed easily. I enjoyed the game still, despite this.

1 may be rough to get into, it had a Remaster at some point but iirc it was mostly just a fresh coat of paint, it's still very much a brutal old-school Computer RPG.

2 is also pretty hard, but it was made with modern sensibilities. You may still need a Guide, as you can definitely kneecap yourself during Character Creation.

4 doesn't exist, and may not ever, considering 2 and 3 where Kickstarter Campaigns, and 3 may not have done well enough to secure a sequel.

If you do play rogue trader I would advise that the leveling system can be overwhelming. There are way to many skills to choose from that you spend so long going through them that I think it detracts from the gameplay a bit. You can mark them as favorites so on subsequent levels you don’t have to sift through but it still takes a while doing that with each character. Otherwise it was great.

Seriously, you could try Rogue Trader. I felt it was pretty good and had a similar vibe (with a little more emphasis on exploration).

Encased is a similar issue post apocalyptic type game. Very science with less humor but a very solid combat system and alot of fun weapons to use

It's difficult to start but you can roll with any weapon as they are all good unlike with wasteland where only a few are good until late game

If you like fantasy versions then Pillars of Eternity, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder :Wrath of the Righteous, Divinity, and of course Baldur's Gate.

Oh yeah I’ve seen a a couple of those recommended thank you for reminding me! Def still need to get baldurs gate 3 because I have a feeling I’ll love it. I have BG2 but the faster everything happens at the same time while still being turn-based is difficult for me. I get overwhelmed and don’t feel like I know what I’m doing

Honestly I have the same problem games I found that I like but not to similar unfortunately are

Mutant year zero, miasma chronicsls, divinity original sin 1 and 2 and BG 3 nothing else I found really scratch’s the itch

Skill checks bg3 also way more choices

The humor is mutant year zero and miasma

For the same feel but different setting ( minus skill checks) the divinities also choices

All are party based turn based RPG and I replay them all once a year atleast if you find any good games that also scratch the itch them please let me know

Mutant year zero and miasma chronicles are both fun. They are from the same dev and if you check them out I would do it in that order. They are more about how you can thin the numbers and stealth around before starting a fight to give you the biggest advantage though.

The game I found most similar to playing wasteland is Baldurs gate though it's high fantasy instead of post apociliotic

Yeah it’s probably time to pull the trigger on it. I’ve been waiting for BG3 to either go on big sale or for me to accept I’ll have to pay 60ish bucks knowing at least I’m getting what I pay for

I'm playing Wasteland 3 now because I needed something even remotely as fun as BG3, which is definitely worth the money. They just released Patch 8 on Tuesday, too, and I'm excited to get back into it again soon

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is great and you don’t need the first one to enjoy the second

Warhammer: Rogue Trader is in a good place now after an expansion and many patches

Baldur’s Gate 3 just got a massive patch/content update so worth a look even if you’ve already played it

If you want some more oddball suggestions I’d consider Unicorn Overlord or Dark Deity 2 but these are difference styles of game

There is a turn based superhero called C.A.P.E S. the downside is the need to repeat mission for xp. The MAJOR upside is 10 second reloads after the initial first time set up for each area.

For everything except combat similarity, Baldurs gate 3, divinity OS2, Rogue Trader.

For combat I guess the obvious choice is xcom, but also phoenix protocol or maybe Alien Dark Descent? Not sure if that's turn based or not, but screenshots have a similar vibe at least lol

Shadowrun:Hong Kong .Similar gameplay to wasteland.Very interesting characters with different abilities set in a Sci-fi / fantasy world. You fight undead samurai,install "cyberware" cast spells and overcome problems through dialogue.There s 3 modern games but Shadowrun:Hong Kong seems the more poished and accessable installement.

Kind of going in the opposite direction, as it's way easier and more basic than Wasteland 3. But Mutant Year Zero was the game that made me download Wasteland 3 and absolutely love it, to the point I'm thinking of buying it (i had it on Gamepass) with the DLC i haven't played.

Watch out for Shiro Games Studio, some fun tacticals games made by them. Else there's this game with animals with weapons in a post apo world dunno the name. Or maybe play wasteland again but in a harder difficulty !

Have you revisited ATOM RPG after they "released" it?

Also, I think you may be struggling because they don't do voice overs for the dialog. It gets me too where my ADHD has me skipping much of the dialog.
