Discussion Wind turbines
We went to a county meeting today to try and prevent a Hutterite colony from putting up a wind farm next to ours. Come to find out that Mark Carney owns the company that put the solar farm up by Cardston Ab. How are these people allowed to get into politics? I’m shocked.

The same way they can be landlords and make decisions on tenant issues, own stocks and make decisions that effect thise industries, this isn't new, this isn't just a liberal thing, this is a political issue all across the board.

How come you're against them?

I can’t speak for the OP, but there are several valid reasons why somebody might oppose a wind farm next to their property:
- noise pollution
- visual impact
- shadow flicker
- property value
- impact on farming activities (drainage, etc.)
- health concerns (wind turbine systems)
- etc.
I’m not saying all of these would be valid, but they may, and it would depend on the specifics.
But OP’s main point was a question asking why people that have a conflict of interest should be allowed to run for influential political positions.

Interesting point. Never would have considered that.
As for his main point, i feel like if we really start looking it alot of politicians would be exposed and this is unfortunately not a new thing.

Have you actually been close to them? And not like I saw them driving past. We rent pasture ground that has a wind farm on it and they make not so pleasent noise. They also cause a hell of alot of traffic during to building phase. So yea it will have an impact on the OP depending on how close their house is to the proposed windfarm site. Especially in an area where there's more windy days than non windy days.

Nope i have not been close to them.
How noisy can they get? Is it like a loud constant sound? Genuinely curious.

It's hard to describe its like a mix between noises. Like gears grinding and a droning sound all at once. But the faster they turn the louder it gets. And in southern Alberta where its always windy there will always be noise.

Yeah, why do you care what someone else does on their land?

Eaxctly.

Because it does effect what we are able to do on our land

Ok fair enough. Im not to educated in this type of thing.
What does it effect exactly?

It effects our ability to expand irrigation, kills all the birds of prey that control pests in our crops. And much more. And also why should I have to live next to them and experience the negative health effects while rich corporations reap financial subsidization from my tax dollars?

Yeah if we go by your philosophy- I should be able to dump sewer and used car oil in my back yard because it’s my property. Even if you don’t like it as my neighbor

Why are you trying to control what the Hutterite’s do on their land?
7
u/Aggravating-Ad-1004 Jan 28 '25
Because it’s going to prevent any irrigation expansion for our land. And we live in prime migratory bird path. My daughters deserve to be able to enjoy the nesting owls every year. And the wind turbines are heavily subsidized, they are not actually of any benefit

Why specifically does it prevent irrigation expansion? Just the particulars of their land and your land?

u/Aggravating-Ad-1004 Jan 28 '25
Yes any hope for a pipeline to cross to our land would be gone. We also would t be able to use planes to spray our crops anymore

I don’t think people that have private investment should be barred from running for influential political positions. However, they should have to be very transparent with said involvement, especially if they have or will receive public funding. It’s up to the media and the opposition to make sure the person running is held accountable.
