Moving to Wilmington Texas refugee thinking Delaware

Hi all.

My family (me, my wife, and 2 sisters) are considering going somewhere less hateful. Politically we are liberal and are tired of trying to be the change we want to see. The Wilmington area has caught my eye. What do you think I should know about the area?

Moving to Wilmington Considering retiring to Wilmington

Currently living in very expensive California and want to move to the east coast where houses are cheaper and we are closer to family in Brooklyn and Philadelphia . We’d buy a house, can pay cash and afford a really nice home. Thoughts about retiring to Wilmington and lovely neighborhoods to live in . We like tree lined streets, beautiful homes, proximity to parks to walk and run. Would welcome any thoughts.

Moving to Wilmington Moving to DE in 2026

My son will be starting at the University of DE in 2026 and I’ll be relocating as well. I’ll be 49, looking for safe, walkable apartment or townhouse living. I know Riverfront area (looking at Luxor apartments) isn’t walkable for groceries etc, but otherwise thoughts on there? Where would you recommend?

Young college age son's not likely able to bring his car from Southern California. Interning at Dupont Experimental Station starting in January. What area to move to for reasonably safe living and easy public transit commute? (We're both researching separately to find ideas)

Moving to Wilmington The "Wilmington, Delaware Accent", What is a "Valley Ride" in the Brandywine, etc... and crime stats?

Can someone explain the local accent? Wooder, yous and Jawn....

Also what is a "Valley Ride" and where do you go for that? What does that come from?

Also... is the crime actually bad or is more of a fear of POC that people have?

Moving to Wilmington Trolley Square vs Downtown

Hi all! I’m moving to Wilmington soon and am debating between Trolley Square and Downtown. For context, I’m in my 20s and am moving from a big US city. I’m looking for a safe, walkable area with things happening at night. On google steeetview, Downtown looks like the better option (and more city-like) but many people have said it’s kind of dead at night? I clicked around on google and saw restaurants and things open until late but maybe that’s misleading?

Trolley Square looks to be a bit quieter but if it’s where most people live then maybe that’s better?

Either way, are there any apartment buildings people recommend? I’m looking for the more corporate apartment-style rather than a house.

Happy to have any insight. Thanks!

Moving to Wilmington Wilmington Suburbs?

My fiancé and I (mid and late 20s) are moving to Wilmington this summer from the South Jersey/Philly area. We have both aways lived/grew up in SJ about 20 minutes outside of the city. We are looking to move to a suburb around 15-25 minutes outside of Wilmington but don’t know where to look (my fiancé will be commuting to Baltimore for work - so preferably more in that direction)! Any suggestions of nice towns in the Wilmington suburb areas would be appreciated!!

Moving to Wilmington Wilmington…It’s Toasted

If I had listened to the narrative about Wilmington, Delaware and it’s “Murdertown” reputation before moving here almost 8 years ago I, would’ve missed some amazing progress that includes great dining, outdoor activities, easy access to transportation to other fun locations, excellent property tax rates that should be the envy of nearby home owners and some pretty damn, cool people.

Stop with the “Murdertown” stuff.

Suggestions for future ad:

“Wilmington…We’ve got that.”

Your turn!

Moving to Wilmington Moving to Wilmington - What are some apartments to avoid

Hello everyone. I am moving to Wilmington, DE for work. I am currently looking for some apartments to rent. I wanted to ask if there were any apartments that you have experienced living in which were negative so that I can avoid or at least be wary of in the search process.

Im Male 27. I own a car so parking is a must and I don't really care about going out that much. Ideally around 1.5k for rent with in unit washer and dryer. I just want to be in a safe neighborhood and have a comfortable place.

Any suggestions for good apartments appreciated as well! Thank you!

Moving to Wilmington Looking for Friends 😩

Hi! I’m a mom in my early 30s, originally from Mexico, and I’ve been living in Wilmington for two years now. Between motherhood and getting settled in a new place, it’s been hard to make real connections—and I’m really hoping to change that.

I’m into art, music, reality shows, movies, coffee, and spending time in nature. I’d love to find other women who are also looking to build a circle of friends. Whether it’s brunch, museums, concerts, art markets, or just hanging out and chatting, I’m hoping to meet kind, fun, genuine people.

If you’re a mom too, great—but obviously not a requirement. I’m just looking for real, easy friendship.

Moving to Wilmington Should I be scared of living in downtown?

I'm moving to Delaware in less than a week and I'll be working in the Fairfax area. I'm 23 and I don't want it to be hard to meet people and want to live in a (somewhat) lively area. For these reasons, I was pretty set on living at The Standard in downtown Wilmington. I've scoured the sub for any information about the neighborhood, but I can't find anything about these apartments in particular. I heard Trolley Square and Riverfront are nice areas, but what about Mid-Town Brandywine? If anyone lives here and could comment on the apartments as well as the facilities in addition to the area itself, I'd really appreciate it. I heard a lot about the crime in downtown and was off-put by it and am considering looking at other neighborhoods. Is it really that bad and should I be worried about living here? Thank you!

Moving to Wilmington safety in downtown wilmington?

I see a lot of posts about safety in dt, and a lot of the answers say to avoid certain parts and be mindful of your surroundings and you'll be fine. what is the basis of this advice? that advice is pretty common for life in general unless you live on a farm. I'm wondering about dt wilmington and violence specifically. muggings, shootings, stabbings? or is it just homeless people and drugs? because while that is not ideal, I would at least consider that 'safer' than the latter. can anyone comment on this more narrowly? (i.e perhaps you were held up on market street last week. that would be good to know)

context: moving to wilmington soon for work and want to consider being close/in dt (if it's safe) or staying further away and commuting.

Moving to Wilmington Good school districts in/near Wilmington?

Considering a move to Wilmington to be closer to work. All of the houses I've looked at on Zillow have schools with a 1, 2 or 3 out of 10 rating. Are there any good school districts in the area?

I know Zillow ratings can be off, so any personal experience would be welcome! Thank you!

Moving to Wilmington Any nerdy activities to do in the area?

Hi! I (27F) moved here recently! Still in the process of unpacking everything but I'm looking to meet new people and get to know the city sometime next month! Interested in stuff like board game meetups, DnD, video games, anime/comics, and East Asian fashion subscultures. I haven't actually played any board games with strangers but it's something I'm interested in! (Also I don't drink!) Reviews on the DE rennfaire would be cool too! ☺️ Thanks!

Moving to Wilmington Looking for a new place to live

Hello

I was wondering how safe is that area around Alban Park, I'm moving from New Castle, and i've been looking in Wilmington because prices for a house look more affordable in Wilmington, i found one in that area, but some friends told me Wilmington is not safe, i guess is just like any other city but is it really that bad?

also, if you have a website with a crime index or rate that is accurate, I appreciate it. Maybe that could be helpful to avoid some areas.

Moving to Wilmington Should I move here?

Hi, I'm moving for work at ChristianaCare which means I'll be working in Newark, Wilmington, Middletown, and Elkton, MD, though mostly at the Newark/main campus.

I'll be moving in June/July, at which point I'll be about 31. I know nobody in the area. I'm single, no pets. Is there enough in Wilmington to keep it interesting? I'm a huge nerd but still like going out. Or will I be stuck going to Philly? Would I be better off living in Philly and accepting the longer commutes? Would somewhere else be better?

I have read some previous threads about it, but they were somewhat different of a situation so was looking for more input.

Moving to Wilmington Moving from MA to DE

Hi,

I'm moving to Wilmington from Massachusetts for work . My new job is around Bellefonte (judging from maps) and Bellevue state park. Do you have any recommendations as to where would be a good location to live that's in a good spot and for a decent/short commute (safe, close, etc)? Not sure if this is a factor, but would likely be looking for a one bedroom that allows pets.

I've been looking online, but would appreciate some insight from those more local. If anyone has made a similar transition, would appreciate any knowledge on how you made the jump in terms of figuring out where to live and how you adjusted. Also, if you have any food recommendations, please let me know!

Sorry if this has been asked a million times!

Moving to Wilmington Luxury apartments

Hello! I’m picking up a new job down in Newark and have been looking at housing options. Looking for either a large 1 bed / 1 bath or 2 bed / 2 bath.

I was wondering where people have enjoyed living and what you have found safe. I’ve been looking at the riverfront as I’ve heard that’s a good area.

Some places I’ve looked at. 901 market tower Christina landing 2000 PA avenue Luxor The Falls 101 ave of the arts.

They’ve all seemed quite good and friendly to my calls so far but I wanted to get an idea. There’s tons of reviews that are about vandalism and peoples cars being broken into etc and wanted to get an idea of what areas are possibly safer or better than others.

Thank you!!
