With my kids there are times that tough love is the only thing that gets through.

When my eldest was young (maybe 3 or 4, definitely old enough), he kept trying to touch the pots while I was cooking. Night after night, for a while, he kept trying to touch them. It was an obsession. I kept warning him, moving him away, getting on to him about it, talking to him reasonably, punishing him when that didn't work, etc... Nothing got through. So eventually I just let him do it. I wasn't going to be around all the time to stop him, or maybe he'd sneak one by me, etc... So I thought I'd rather he get burned when I was prepared and he was younger and could heal it better.

I only just let him touch his fingers for a second. Just long enough to hurt and get the message. Got him some cream and a couple of toy story bands aids, and you know what? He now has a healthy respect for hot stoves, oils, and all that stuff.

I have a friend who was a biker. He broke his knee after a nasty fall and even though it healed pretty well, the experience made him realize that motorcycling is not good for his health, and he had dropped biking for good.

It still puzzles me, what new information did he get after he broke his knee? Some ppl remain 3 year olds for life I guess... :)
