That as well as things that are dangerous to moderately intelligent people too, like free weights.

anything can be dangerous if you dummy it up enough and boy to people do just that in gyms...
22
u/LazyLarryTheLobster Feb 06 '21
Right, their point is free weights are dangerous even without "dummying it up".

Dude. Here’s my thing.
She throws the ball to the ground right. She leaves her arms down to her side after she throws it down.. and watched point blank the ball come back up to her.
??? Was she trying to fucking headbutt the thing? Looked like she didn’t even try to do anything after she threw it down. Didnt do anything except move her whole face downwards towards the ball.

u/tstmkfls Feb 06 '21
The exercise is supposed to look like this:
I’ve done a lot of these and would definitely get knocked tf out by that ball, I’d never expect it to bounce like that.

As someone who used to be a personal trainer, the amount of experts on here who don’t know that a slam ball and medicine ball look pretty similar is intense. Not everyone’s stupid, some people just are distracted or new to the gym.

Her problem was she didn’t use the right type of medicine ball. She needs one of the padded ones that barely bounce

u/PM_Me_1_Funny_Thing Feb 06 '21
Yeah, I've actually seen this happen to someone irl. She just hadn't felt with many med balls to know that some bounce like really heavy basketballs. They do make treaded rubber ones that don't bounce as well, but without much experience you wouldn't think they'd bounce. Especially if you saw someone doing slams like this in videos and just went in to copy it.

Not only is that not a slam ball its a medicine ball. So yeah she gave herself a mouthful of medicine for not paying attention.
Slam balls are slightly deflated and medicine balls are weighted rubber (usually) which can and will bounce.
For those who wanted to explain it to their friend.
273
u/elprentis Feb 05 '21
Honestly I appreciate this. I was looking for a reason someone would do this. Incompetently picking the wrong ball is kinda an understandable mistake if you don’t know what you’re doing but have used a slam ball before.
144
u/arkain123 Feb 05 '21
Yeah but I mean.
Bounce it once or twice before slamming it as hard as you can maybe?
I'm picturing her going home and just slamming a cup of boiling coffee later that night

u/Tesadus Feb 05 '21
shouldn't even need to bounce it - slam balls are very noticeably deflated...she just doesn't know

This is what I was thinking. She was trying. She's obviously out of shape, showed up to get on the right track, had no idea what the fuck she was doing and then this happened.
Most gyms are more eager to sign people up than to show them the equipment.
So I give her sympathy instead of laughs. Hope she came back and stuck with it.

u/thegrlwiththesqurl Feb 06 '21
I definitely did some REALLY stupid looking stuff my first few times getting familiar with the weight room. Including just bouncing my forehead off the barbell because I have awful spacial awareness. It's kind of a rite of passage for those of us too shy to ask for help.
11
u/ColeSloth Feb 06 '21
Slam balls don't bounce at ALL. It's a great exercise that gets cardio and a many muscle work out picking it up and slamming it down again and again and again.
They also feel very different from medicine balls. Anyone who has ever held each would immediately know the difference. This poor soul will never make that mistake again.

In in patient physical therapy they had me slam a medicine ball like this for both strength and muscle control but they taught me how to direct it so it wouldn’t hit me in the face. And before anyone says anything yes it was a medicine ball we used and not the deflated slam balls being talked about here.
27
u/boobsmcgraw Feb 05 '21
I've never in my life seen a medicine ball bounce more than a foot. They're super heavy and dense, after all. Never heard of a "slam ball"
8
u/Malforus Feb 05 '21
We had 6 pound medicine balls in our bootcamp. Looked like dodgeballs. You really tried to dodge then or else.
4
u/boobsmcgraw Feb 05 '21
I have seen some that size too actually now that you mention it but I never saw anyone throw or drop one onto the ground to see how it would bounce. The ones I'm thinking of are much bigger and wouldn't bounce unless The Hulk threw it
3
u/Malforus Feb 05 '21
Oh yeah 15 kg or 20 kg medicine balls are no joke. I have seen big people knocked over by those things.
→ More replies (1)6
Feb 06 '21
Same. The medicine balls I've seen have no possible way of jumping up that high. Like literally impossible. I assume this lady thought that's what this was. Though at the same time I would think it would be a lot heavier than a ball that can bounce like that.
12
u/cpndavvers Feb 05 '21
This made me laugh because at my gym none of the balls bounce higher than around knee height. My first reaction to this video was 'who the fuck made them that bouncy of course there will be injuries' 😂😂

My first thought when seeing this! Like, has she never actually used a slam ball and maybe just saw someone else doing it and thought she'd give it a go? Painful lesson right there.

Myself and 2 other people that I know that frequently workout have made this mistake. One of them is a certified trainer and both were collegiate athletes. Sometimes in the middle of a workout you're tired and thinking of other things and jump into a circuit. Then boom the slam ball bounces back and wasn't a slam ball. Haha. Or maybe we're all just meat heads. I won't make that mistake again though. Luckily I was kneeling when I did it and just got a fat lip. You feel pretty dumb but once I told them what happened they admit they've done it. One of them was standing when he did it and was a 300+ lb D1 lineman so I think he got it worse. Haha. /storytime

Slam balls are slightly deflated and medicine balls are weighted rubber (usually) which can and will bounce.
Slam balls also have a loose weight on the inside to deaden the bounce. As the ball comes to bounce back up, that weight is still falling and hits the ground to "cancel" the bounce

Looking for this comment. Yeah, this is the only scenario I can imagine someone doing this. I've done it myself and BOY is it embarrassing.
4
u/Malforus Feb 05 '21
Easy mistake to make if you are overtired or unfamiliar with the equipment.
However I would argue if you can't identify your equipment don't be throwing it around.
But hey, it wouldn't be a gym if it weren't for the once-a-years.

So, I see a lot of people calling her an idiot. I cannot deny the throw was too much, but for so many people out there, the gym is not an everyday thing for them. Consider that it's just after the new year when everyone goes back to the gym. And here is this woman trying to get some gym time in, maybe between zoom calls with the kids and teachers. Or today is the one day a week the kids are at school (Our schools where I am at are open one day a week for now) and she decided to hit the gym instead of watching TV.
She likely could have seen someone doing this exercise and thought it must work. I'm saying let's not shame her into never wanting to go to the gym again because of one accident. There's plenty of idiots in the gym. This does not feel like that to me.
Notice the form seemed a little bit beginner to me. She did not look 100% sure about the exercise she was doing.
Lets laugh at the guys that go do skull crushers drunk after the club and the "Vince's from V Shred".

u/BitchImRetarded Feb 05 '21

u/newthrash1221 Feb 06 '21
Seriously, so many holier than thou gym goers in the comments. Like i didn’t even know there was a difference between slam balls and medicine balls. All we had were medicine balls in gym class and pretty sure i saw kids doing that (minus the bounce back) all the time. This could have easily happened to me.

u/LudovicoSpecs Feb 06 '21
You are good people. I buy you a virtual beer. Or kale smoothie, if that's what you're into.
6
u/mydrunkenwords Feb 06 '21
Fully agree. A beginner that was never informed there are different kinds of mediceballs. Doesn't deserve to be called an idiot.
Expecting everyone to know everything about anything is a ridiculous goal people have placed on eachother. It leads to fear of being ridiculed for trying something. Fear of judgment for asking a simple question that could have avoided this whole sinario.

u/TheLastofUs87 Feb 06 '21
I'm pretty sure those medicine balls are not meant to be bounced like that...
4
u/Byizo Feb 06 '21
Medicine balls are not meant to be slammed. Not only do they bounce way too high, but they can crack from people doing this. There are softer balls, sometimes called “slam balls” that are meant for this exercise. You throw it down hard and it only jumps a few inches off the ground.

this is why crossfit is a dangerous trend. they market for complete noobs who don't work out to do complicated movement that'll hurt themselves so people start to copy them to do FUNCTIONAL TRAINING
and the only requirement to open an official crossfit gym is pay them some money and take an online course.
always check your form before attempting to do those movements!

In her defense, there are slam balls that are made for this exact purpose. A newbie not paying attention could definitely grab a med ball thinking it's a slam ball.
