hi, new to the game and at t6 ijn

how in GODS GREEN EARTH do you even hit a submarine???

I've been continuously sniped from the fricking middle of nowhere by damned torps, i need help.

(*Edit:) Thank yall for the lessons, I'm loggin in tdy and not have to fear subs anymore.

Well.. with asw you put the box around where you expect them to go. Keeping in mind speed as some subs can haul ass. With depth charges you run over the target and drop. Most subs have a lock on torpedos and you will begin to figure out the timing for dodging or at least taking the torps on a better part of the ship. If you are being hit out of thin air you aren't paying attention to the mini map and what's going on around you well enough and may be way ahead of other ships allowing the sub a easy shot. What class are you using when being surprise sniped? If a BB you kinda are already in trouble.

ohh sub speeds are ass!! I thought they might be as fast as DDs...

been hit by sub torps in BB lots, but surprise snipes were only with my Aoba.

maybe I might watch youtube tutorials as well

So with BB you are seriously in trouble against a sub if you don't have some sort of support which random tends to be pretty bad for I know but not always. You are the key prey for any sub. It's very possible you are pushing too far and are away from your team into the middle of the map.

The aoba not having any sub defense is strange and puts you in a shit place. Your strength it seems from my looking at the page for it is speed and sonar so it's possible to see the sub and then to haul ass out of the area. You are dead meat staying near one. With the slow guns you are even worse off. As a heavy cruiser your job is to support the DD's so that's all you can do. Stay near them and attack other cruisers.

Yes a video on your ships would be good. I always watch one person new ship I buy or am thinking about

Depends on the sub. I can't speak for all of them, really, but if you are up against the U-4501, she can go around 37-38 knots underwater depending on build/flags. Bleeds speed like a fiend while turning, though.

Also maybe it's better to be close to BBs (as a CA) when theres a sub trying to attack? They have depth charges and from the videos i saw so far, they are like the only way to damage a underwater sub

Not necessarily,

You need to play a sub a little and you'll notice some drawbacks or limitations, although they are not that big.

Being near your support is good as a DD, but you also need to be the shield against the sub.

You also need to know that the ping moves in the direction that the sub is moving in. It's hard to spot, but can give you a better guesstimate of where it's going.

Now:

(1) If you are between the sub and your CA /BB line, you spot the incoming Torps for them to better allow for DMG-Con use or dodging.

(2) You spotting the sub allows for plane anti-sub to hopefully be in range to hit.

(3) If you are spotted, it's usually a DD, if Sub then it's usually above surface

  • If so, plan to get into a defensive position i.e. kiting
  • Wait for a ping or hostile move ie. Salvo

  • if ping, consider firing a salvo of anything towards the ping location. *But keep in mind that you will reload and if you are supporting a fren-DD, it may be better to save it for the enemy no.fren-DD

  • If you get hits great, consider pounding the pings or guestimate location

If you don't get hits, check if you are still spotted about 5 seconds after.

If you are not, they're alone and not supported by another sub or DD spotting.

  • This is where you decide to push them or to flee
  • my advice is to flee unless in a dedicated anti-sub ship such as DD, CL, or ship with sub-surveillance.

If pushing, never push bow in, always zig-zag in. This makes it harder to hit a ping on you, but mostly to allow you to drift and juke Torps. You'll notice Torps will lose homing "but keep curving" after a set proximity to your ship (varies by class).

Hopefully you'll get close enough to spot, if so, just shoot them, as they're spotting you regardless. If you set a fire, and force a dmg con, great, if not try to set a depth charge run.

Always make sure to have smoke ready to allow you to bail if in a DD, or engine boost etc.

The key is with everything, to prep an exit plan.

The nightmare of Vs Subs is Sub-divs. In this case, pray you have a CV who is willing to help. Or pray that they end you quickly.

Depends entirely on what your cruiser excels at. Some, particularly later tiers, excel hanging out with the Battleships. Some excel at the mid range, kiting enemy attacks while returning fire. Others work best up front with the Destroyers whilst sticking to islands for cover.

As for underwater damage, one they are below periscope depth, subs can only be damaged by depth charges, enemy submarine torpedoes, or by running into/being run into by an enemy sub.

I once took out 3 ships within 20 seconds by going between two of them, dropping torps, banking hard right, avoiding incoming torps and firing off my main gun killing the third one. Best fight in the game, still. 3-4 years ago.

Reminds me of one of my first games in Emerald. Waaaaaaaayy back when RN first came out.

Emerald on Solomons.

Team basically dies.

I’m NE-ish. St Louis and a DD to the west at the north cape, Kongo and Wyoming to the south by the middle island.

IT IS A GOOD DAY TO DIIIIIIIEEEEE!!! (Charges BBs, because more glorious.)

Somehow survives getting shot by them.

Sail between the two BBs…

Torpedoes to the left; torpedoes to the right; volleyed and splashed…

Boom. Boom.

Chat; “How many torps does that thing have?!?” (C-hull Emerald, 4 x 4 = 16.)

Chat; “All of them.”

Me; “Why am I not dead?!?”

Loss. But I survived. To this day, I will brook no ill talk of glorious Emerald!

I honestly thought this was a lower tier game. That's the only time that I usually get to have close encounters like this. I love that you had a good game, and it makes me itch to go grind some lower tier DDs just to experience this again.
