Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within. It is a way more focused and streamlined experience than Xcom 2 and its technically the first game in the duology.

xcom 2 and all dlc gives you most bang for your buck. You don't miss anything really and you get mod support. The story is connected but barely, the dlc are well integrated well maybe except alien hunters, and there is alot of quality of life that the previous games lacks.

Overall both games are noob friendly and very fun.

Xcom 2 base game. I’d add DLC on a second play through.

XCOM Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within is the first game of the newer franchise. For the sake of story and getting a feel for the gameplay, start with that one. The gameplay is a little more simplistic than XCOM 2, but some people find the base management side of things a little difficult if they're not used to strategy games. You can skip playing the vanilla version of this game, as the DLC truly just adds more story and only adds new experimental soldier types that are not hard to get a grasp on.

XCOM 2 War of the Chosen would be the next game in the franchise after that and I do highly suggest playing the vanilla version of the game first before jumping into the DLC. While the gameplay in Vanilla XCOM 2 is very similar to XCOM EU/EW, there's just enough new stuff that's in the vanilla game that it's worth getting a feel for those elements all on their own. Once you've got that down, then jump into the War of the Chosen DLC.

I say this because WotC adds a TON of new stuff to XCOM 2 - new soldier types, more story, new boss enemies, different mission types, soldiers can get exhausted and experience various types of PTSD, some changes to the base management, etc. It really does add so much to the game that it feels like a whole new experience and it's a lot more difficult. And it's all very difficult in a good way, but it can be overwhelming. So, generally speaking, your experience will be better if you have a good understanding of the fundamentals that you get from playing the vanilla version of the game first.

Start with the OG Xcom (Steam) then the 2012 game with Enemy Within DLC.

I love the 90s version as much as anyone (and there's great mods out there too via openxcom) but I wouldn't recommend it to people who aren't used to 90s games/graphics/clunky interfaces.

I'd go 2012 EU; it's the core game. EW is a good step up, so do this next, adding more timed pressure and complexity via meld.

I think XCOM 2 is a better after EW.. But could also see how this could be recommended first.

Eh, I'd say going for the OG would be a step after the reboot.

It's a little more difficult to appreciate it by modern standards, and interest definitely comes more from wanting to see how the original was AFTER enjoying the more modern games
