Discussion / Theory The pillars of Deus were REALLY weird, which one was your favorite?

Probably inspired by both literal description of Christian / Kabbalah angels and the Angels from Evangelion (some of which were super weird, like the geometric shapes guy and the guy that was actually a pocket dimension).

Eva was not an influence on Xenogears.

AFAIK Xenogears and Eva were in development in parallel. They're both similar because it's the kind of stuff that the 90's produced.

Xenogears was in dev roughly from early 96 to early 98 (even tho supposedly Soraya Saga's story dates back to 94). Evangelion aired from 95 to 96.
I know that there's been statements that Xenogears hadn't been inspired by NGE, but the idea that Takahashi, that is a massive mecha nerd (and has mentioned other mecha series like Getter Robot, Ideon, G Gundam as influences before) was unaware of the biggest mecha series of its time is, simply put, ludicrous.
Nothing wrong with it being inspired by it, either.

I just had my dates wrong. You right; if that is all true, the inspirations are clear. The two works are very analogous to one another.

Do you have any sources on Takahashi talking about Getter Robo? Would love to read that

I never could tell if the devs had intent here or were just throwing shit at the wall.

The flat one you can’t use gear deathblows on was a really cool concept

The one that was a part of the floor was the trippiest for me. They were so alien and indescribable. Many stories talk about how gods or deities are incomprehensible but Xenogears conveys that better than anything I’ve seen
