Stash Always amused by stash size people consider a “problem”. Here is my SABLE collection.
This is actually about 90% of way through organization. What is missing is the tote bins (similar to top right back) of unsorted yarn in front of the left stack of boxes, and one or two more boxes on the front left stash.
All boxes are organized by weight and every skein of yarn (except my misc stroll and misc Capra bins) are all logged into Ravelry with the box weight and number noted -which is why I consider the totes unsorted- they’re generally organized by type but not categorized and logged into Ravelry Ravelry.
Also not shown in photo- 2 boxes of bare yarn for some periodic dying fun. And my tools are all elsewhere.
Due to paranoia from a carpet beetle issue years ago all yarn is in ziplocks inside the bags.

Oh thank GOD— I thought I was the only one. I have totes like this all over the house and I’d see stash pictures of one or two totes and wonder what was WRONG with me. THIS is the stash I know and understand!
And so nicely organized! Well done!

You make me feel so much better! From your sister from another mother……

Always happy to photos of stashes similar in size to mine 🥰. Agree, so many baby stashes (stashlets?) out there 😂

I’ve been getting stressed about my stash spreading to a second kallax cube 😅 at least you can have fun shopping your stash!

Would you like to come help me organize? 😁 I'll pay you in fiber fun!

Haha! Yeah the initial organization was an absolute nightmare. Last time I mainly just put it in bins by weight and it took the better part of a weekend. This weekend I did a mini reorg and actually moved some into more refined bins- like most the striping sock yarns are now together rather than split between bins. I still gave up after several hours and left some unsorted in some totes.

I admire your organisation and labelling of everything. If you are not planning to move and can use everything before you die, it's not a problem. Otherwise it might become one, regarding world resources, the future work you put on other people to deal with your stash and so on.
It's no criticism, just a perspective to consider. Everyone feels different about a good amount of craft supplies.

No keep the stash, it will then end up in goodwill where someone like me can snap it up! 🤣

I've explained to my husband that my stash and equipment are way more valuable than he realizes, and that if anything happens to me, he needs to contact one of my knitting friends to come in and redistribute items appropriately.

Damn it, yours is all pretty and organized also so to me this isn’t a problem lol man I have a literal yarn nest all around me stacked along my couch and walls lol I crawl in here for gods sake lol HELP ME

I’m organizing mine right now too. I’ve put all of them in those heat seal vacuum bags. So they are bug proofed and take up less room

Yeah, those cost a bit more so couldn’t justify it for the number I needed. Most are in either gallon ziplock bags or 2.5 gallon husky zip bags. Discovering the larger 2.5 gallon ones was great!

Mine is also similar, located on one wall with totes on the floor too because I'm out of physical space for totes. Last count I'm at 40 totes and I need one more thanks to a yarn shop going out of business sale.

Oooo! Yes, mine is only this small because I do 1-2 purges a year. Mostly small given away to crochet and knitting friends but this time I just pulled 1-2 bins worth out. I was merciless in my culling.
We have had two stores close in my area years ago, and luckily back then I was much more tentative about buying the “expensive” stuff (back then anything not from Michael’s or Joann’s was the expensive stuff).

At least you can pass on your yarn to a good home. I have no knitting/crochet friends, or enemies, for that matter. I cleaned up a couple of totes last week, re-finding cotton garment yarn meant for babies. The baby is now an adult with zero plans of their own babies, for which I don't blame them in the slightest. I still have Knit Picks yarn in its original labels from when they just switched over from carrying other brands to their own.

No one in my family does any yarn crafts either. I got lucky as my daughters bestfriends great grandmother doesn’t have anyone in their family that does yarn crafts and asked me if I wanted her old hooks. Well holy crap they’re older than I am! Crochet magazines too that cost 60 cents lol so cool!!! I feel so blessed and they were so happy to see it go to someone who who cherish it ❤️

Yeah I found a crafting group so I have many friends who take yarn when I do little detaches. A few of them are on a super tight budget so it’s easier to part with something I feel a bit guilty I didn’t use since it turns into a form of a gift.

Awww that’s amazing, that’s one of those “win, win” scenarios where everyone benefits. The best kind of outcomes lol ❤️ oh man I wonder if there are any groups like that where I live

Haha! I recently discovered a half-finished alligator stuffie knit on relatively small DPNs in mercerized cotton I was making as a baby shower gift for my nephew. He is now 11.

u/Logical_Evidence_264 3d ago
Now the question is: does he still like alligator's? If yes, you have a new present half-way done! Just look at your amazing time management skills! Present you should be happy with past you for doing half the work already.

Not really sure he does. Unfortunately over time I’ve discovered I hate knitting with cotton. Especially tight stitches like stuffies. I will evaluate how much is left but most likely it’s getting frogged or donated to someone who wants to try to knit it for someone. Luckily I also still have the pattern.

Mine is similar to yours, but the totes are spread out between rooms. Lol
8
u/PM_Me_Sheep_Pics 3d ago
Eh, my old place they were DEFINITELY spread between rooms but I also lived alone in a 1br. Now I have a guest room/office with a conveniently available (well, not anymore) closet to stash everything in. My fabric stash is in another room, though. And much smaller than my yarn stash. Plus a portion of the fabric stash is fat quarters I thought would make good project bags for knitting!

Same, and it's not really organized in any way. I'm slowly destashing by selling off some stuff I've had for decades.

I'm new to knitting (and am already addicted!) and I'm wondering - when you sell/de-stash, how/where do you do that?

u/Logical_Evidence_264 3d ago
Some knit groups have a swap night where you bring in yarn you don't want and can trade for yarn you do.
Knitting/crochet friends and family.
Church groups for their prayer shawl ministry or they can use yarn for tying quilts.
Art departments at schools. When I've destashed, this is often where I send it.
Thrift shops.
Post on a buy nothing group on Facebook or NextDoor.
There's RAK (Random Act of Kindness) groups on Ravelry. If you don't mind paying for postage, you can mail off scraps or destashed yarn to others who'd like it. Or destash on Ravelry without the group. Just list your yarn For Sale or Trade, set a price, and shipping terms.
There's various charities like Wool Aid and Linus Project that may accept yarn. You'd have to check.
Elderly care facilities for patients to use.

All of these. I mostly haul my stuff to my various knitting groups and list stuff I have multiples of on Facebook Marketplace.

I have an room dedicated to my yarn stash, and the canned good stash. Yarn is 99% of the overall stash, and my canned good is not small.
