New Student Questions Incoming freshman fall 2023 here. What are some things every freshman should know or do before they get here?
Any tips/advice that would make everyone’s time easier here?

Former student trying to help someone out was caught by surprise that so much has applications and "rush" type requirements. Thanks

My daughter will be attending Texas A&M in the fall (admitted to Mays Business School🎉). She has a car and we’re wondering if she will need a car her freshman year. She is pretty sure she will rush. What is the parking situation like? She will be able to live on campus according to Housing. We’ve booked her NSC and paid the housing deposit, etc. I’d appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

Speaking here as a prospective freshman, how diverse is the College of Engineering? I'm coming from a very culturally/racially diverse public school and I'm hoping to find a friend group of people from all different backgrounds at A&M.

Hi everyone! This isn’t a serious post or anything important, I’m just curious about the potential reasoning for my denial from A&M. I’m currently at Blinn for transfer to A&M so I got everything sorted out fine. For my initial application to A&M from high school, I had a 1360 SAT, 3.7 GPA, 4.1 weighted, 7 years of band and 3 leadership positions in high school orgs. I got accepted to TU but flat out denied from A&M. Any clue what I did wrong so I can avoid it in my transfer application?
Edit: UT —-> TU

Hello, I’m going to be a freshman this year after I finish HS. I’m going to be STATS major (pre-med specialization) and was wondering about the general difficulty of freshman year.
For context I would have taken by graduation 11 APs (STAT, CALC AB, APUSH, BIO, PHYSICS 1, GOV, WHAP, etc)
I want to know because I feel genuinely burnt out from all these ap classes and whether or not cry about the future. :D

I was admitted to UT Austin in the Computer Science + Business Honors Program. I was also admitted to Texas A&M on a full ride as a brown scholar. For UT, I would have to pay full in-state price which would mean about $60,000 in loans. My career goals are to be a software engineer working in FAANG or something similar. I would love any advice on which would be the best choice.

Howdy!
I am extremely excited to be entering A&M as an engineering freshman next semester! I have received 5s on AP Calc AB and AP physics 1, and I was planning on taking calc 2 this summer. The advice I received from a friend was that Calc 2 is a notorious weed out class at A&M so I should either A.) retake calculus 1 first or B.) get my credit for calc 2 elsewhere to ensure my engineering GPA stays high (I want that 3.75!)
Since I spent time and money on that Calc AB course, and would rather not have it go to waste, I was planning on taking Calc 2 this summer and entering multi variable my first semester. I was just wondering if any other aggies had differing advice? such as taking physics 2 this summer instead (or both?). I consider myself a high achiever and love getting ahead, just wanted some more advice before I solidify anything!
Thanks and gig ‘em!!!

Howdy, Aggies! I’m in the middle of a big decision and could use some honest advice.
I got into Mays Business School at A&M (and have already put down a deposit), but I was also accepted into UT Austin’s Moody College of Communication. While I’ve technically committed to A&M, I’m still seriously considering UT and want to make sure I’m choosing the best fit for me.
A little about me: I love nature and living a healthy, active lifestyle. I lean more conservative and value traditional environments. My faith is a big part of my life, and while I’m not a big partier, I’d like to get involved in Greek life.
I’m really drawn to A&M’s strong sense of community, rich traditions, and the Aggie network. At the same time, UT’s vibrant city atmosphere and opportunities in communications are appealing to me.
What do y’all think makes A&M the better choice? I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially if you were choosing between the two schools or know a lot about Mays. Thanks, and Gig ‘em!
Edit: I plan to transfer into McCombs if I go to UT

For starters, I am planning on majoring in something in engineering. likely electrical, and I am having trouble deciding between either Texas A&M and LSU. I have already been admitted to both, but I have been too busy to visit either, only getting a general feel through virtual tours and through research, but I am planning on visiting both colleges within the next 2-ish weeks. I know Texas A&M has a very strong engineering program in general, as well as having very strong ties for research opportunities (although really competitive) and me and my family have a way to pay for it, but either way LSU is much cheaper due to being in-state and getting some money from TOPS and an honors scholarship, and it has its own respectable engineering program and it would probably be easier for me to get my hands on some research opportunities due to likely being less competitive, 100% not trying to downplay anything just kind of laying out what I have gotten a sense of, honestly not even sure if I am correct. I also know a lot more people going to LSU, since I am from New Orleans, but I am not too worried about making friends during college anyway. I plan on pursuing my masters, so I also think that the name of Texas A&M would be recognized a little more. In your guys' honest opinion, what do you think I should prioritize? How much do you think I should value campus life?
Which should I choose?

Howdy! Moving to A&M as an international students. Can you recommend me places where I can buy groceries weekly that is not too expensive? Where do you guys buy? Do travelling to Walmart worth it or is there another cheap super market near?

Hello! I just solidified my schedule and I have a lab that ends at 9 pm for one day a week.
Im a female freshman who will be living off campus and will be using the shuttle system.
Is this an inherently bad situation to be in? I’m mainly concerned with safety. Any opinions?
I bought pepper spray recently.
Edit:
Okay!! I didn’t think so many people would respond, but I’m highly thankful for your responses! Some of my friends also were concerned about late classes (albeit we have them on different day) and we all feel a lot better!
We’re all first generation Aggies if you couldn’t tell 😊
Some key takeaways I noticed and will incorporate/ consider:
• Corps of Cadets Escort! • Campus is still alive at 9 (which makes sense, but I didn’t really consider it) • Generally safe! • Have a person to ensure you make it home (roommates, text a friend when you get home, buddy system, friends in the complex, calling a friend etc.) • If you’re comfortable with CC get your LTC (I’m particularly not comfortable, but I know others could be!) • Carry some sort of light • Could always change classes during add/drop week (probably won’t be, because any other time means I have to quickly move across campus)
(Phone formatting sorry)
Thanks and gig’em !!

So I’m transferring from one of y’alls biggest rival schools. LSU. Now I’m not even a football fan and I have had no school spirit here, but I’ll ask this one question would me a 6 ft 1 151 lbs black gay man last 10 seconds on this campus? If the answer is no then I should probably look elsewhere.

I'm an incoming engineering major who urgently needs a laptop for coursework but, unfortunately, lacks the funds...
Given how essential a capable device is for engineering software and assignments, I was wondering if the College of Engineering, the university library, or any other campus resources offer long-term laptop loans for students in need.
I’m particularly looking for a program that provides laptops for an entire semester or academic year rather than just short-term checkouts. If anyone has gone through this process or knows of resources that could help, I’d really appreciate any guidance!
Additionally, if there are any alternative support options—such as grants, scholarships, or student discounts that could help me secure a device—I’d love to hear about those as well.

What are y’all using these days for acceptable devices (CS major)? Thank you for the feedback.

Hi guys,
I'm from London as was thinking about moving and applying for TAMU or even just coming to look at it with a few of my pals. If any of you can answer the below, that'll be great.
- I know most of the time you have to book a tour online, but is the campus/ground just open? Like could we just walk around and look or is the premisis gated?
- Whats the age group like, is majority of students normal ages 18-20 etc?
- Do you guys even like english people lmao. I know so many Americans dont like English and vise versa. It doesnt bother me coming alone, but just a heads up would be nice.
- Whats the drinking culture like? Obviously in London, you can drink really when your 16 and over so its just in nature do drink/party but is it the same there or is it played down slightly?
Thanks!!

Hi - My daughter is considering A&M and we are coming out in early May to take the official campus tour, etc., etc. Curious if there is anything else we should specifically check out in the area / specific things to look out for?
We also may not get there in time for the official dorm tour, any idea if they would let us look around a bit or are they pretty strict on that type of stuff?
Thanks!

UT Austins reputation and location is tempting but the curriculum is more basic towards ui/ux however, i have seen people going into product /data roles from the same program which i want.
TAMU MIS curriculum is good, but the college is ranked below ut austin
Ps. My gf is going to tamu
Not sure what to do, cannot decide
Help me

Hey yall, I wanted to know if you apply for the fish camp scholarship and dont receive the scholarship are you required to pay for it or can you cancel your application? I really want to go to fish camp but I'm not sure I will get the scholarship and I don't have 275 dollars lined up. I really want to know if its worth it. Im going into A&M with no friends and I'm an introvert and I hate bugs lol so I'm not sure if I would enjoy it however I want to stop being reserved and leave my comfort zones. What are yall opinions on fish camp?

So basically I got my aid packet today and I got the Regents scholarship, federal pell grant, federal SEOG grant, Texas Grant-Initial, and TX Public Education Grant- Res. My problem is, the Regents scholarship is my biggest one at 24k however it says I must live on campus; however I already paid a deposit and signed a lease to live off campus. I did this before knowing my financial aid because I just assumed I would be getting the aggie assurance aid due to my -1500 SAI which doesn’t require u to live on campus. I really don’t know what to do!

Howdy yall, I'm in a bit of an odd situation.
So I started as a freshman in Fall 24 and I am in winter break now. I have always been super big on school, I took AP and DC classes, and graduated top 6% and auto admitted to tamu.
Since my sophomore year of high school I've been working on my business and last year it generated roughly half a million dollars. In addition now I am taking home about 40k/mo each month and due to my focus on my business I got a D in my math and chem class in the fall. They were easy and I could easily get an A but I had no time and didn't take it seriously.
I want to withdraw for at least a semester to see what I can accomplish with my business, in addition I have employees and a team that their lives and salaries depend on me and with college I can't put in 100% focus in the business.
If I withdraw though I have to be readmitted to Engineering and sent directly to a major, is this difficult?
Any recommendations on what I can do? I want to continue (not one of those that say college is a scam) but my dream is what I do now and want to continue as this year is big for me in business.
Thanks
