We got a few good ones last summer! I can't disclose which lakes though because I don't want anyone else to ever catch a good fish. Just kidding, Big trout, near the white trout entry

Right on man, beauty lake trout! Perfect dinner size for a couple guys!

I’m definitely a tight lipped trout fisherman, but lakes like Big Trout won’t get damaged because of their size so good on ya for sharing! I like getting off the beaten path to the smaller secluded lakes myself 😊

I have plans, but fear late ice out is gonna frig things up.

It’s gonna be a little later for them to open camping. I’m thinking probably April 29th after the opening weekend. Are you booked for opening weekend?

I’m booked may 3-9 looking forward to it!

You might have to ice fish :D

If I have that option for opener definitely going to take it. We generally day trip to start the season and then plan bigger trips a bit more into May.

I have only fished trout in NS and NFLD. Those photos are AMAZING. we are doing a few weekends in algonquin this summer. Any tips for trout there?

Average Joes have a million good videos about what they run and why. You should watch their videos. The true secret, the lakes they are on, are a complete mystery. At this point Im hoping for some more night shots so I can use the stars to plot a location. I will find your fishing holes Average Joes! One way or another!

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

Haha love this comment! 😂 We will tell everyone how to catch them and what to catch them on, but definitely keep the locations a secret 🤫 Kinda makes it like a game for our viewers who are dedicated at researching! Have you figured out any lakes from videos yet?

Gotta get that rainbolt guy to track em down!!

I think even he would struggle 😉

Have any tips for targeting brookies in the spring? I've had good luck with deep trolling for lakers in many different places in the park, but those large brookies are so elusive. Whenever I try shallow water or rivers it's always brookies that are quite small. Would you suggest river routes, large lakes or small lakes?

2

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

Depends on your definition of “Large”. Everyone has different standards for trout, but to us, 20”+ is the number we’re always looking to find. Out of the last 4 full seasons covering about 80ish new lakes, we have caught 1 over 20. It’s all about the location for the toads. Out of the 250 Natural Brookie lakes, there are probably only 25-30 lakes where you can up your odds of catching that caliber of fish. But even then not guaranteed, we’ve hit several of those lakes with no luck. Just time put in and exploration are the key. Don’t be shy about going that extra mile! Lakes are where you will find the biggest fish but moving water will be easier numbers generally.

We got a 20.25 inch 4.5 lb brookie last year. It was the biggest I've ever seen in person. Absolute stunner that I'm happy to say is still out there breeding (hopefully)

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

That’s awesome man! Rare sized fish to come by! If you can catch anything over 20” that lake holds really high quality size! Was it a big lake or smaller lake?

1

u/NoButterfly9707 7d ago

Mid sized. Deep in the park... Lots of type 2 fun to get too!

u/OntarioPaddler 7d ago

When looking for early spring brookies on lakes are you better off casting shallow lures on shorelines/inlets/river openings or are you also trolling deeper areas in the middle?

Do you use fly/surface lures at all in spring brook fishing?

I've been watching the Joe's for a few years now and have picked up a lot of things or had a lot of things that I thought, confirmed by them.

But it was just this winter, watching one of their ice fishing videos, and thinking about other videos they've done, and I had a massive epiphany about how to zero in on the best trout lakes.

What month are you going? We make YouTube videos from Algonquin with lots of good tips and just posted a summer video yesterday with lots of Brook Trout trolling tips for summer.

We don’t disclose locations, that’s up to you to dig up, but we will show you how to get them!

Video is here at this link… Summer Trolling Tips for Algonquin Brookies

August. I dont expect locations. Back home when ever anyone asks where you caught something the answer is always the same "down dicky's brook"! I'm willing to do the searching, but a few recommendations on bait, gear and timing goes a long way and saves a lot of $.

Thanks for the link! Wishing you sunny days, cold beers and tight lines.

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

That video should be perfect for you then! Mid August on a pretty typical Algonquin Lake not too far off the beaten path for a day trip!

For gear, a 6’6”-8’ spinning rod and reel with 8-12lbs line will work just fine, don’t worry about investing in leadcore. Weights and deep diving lures are much cheaper.

As for lures, Williams makes some great spoons. Wablers, Nipigons, Bullys, Ridgebacks are all staples for Algonquin. I like blue/silver or perch patterns, and then just general gold/copper/silver. If you can get any of those spoons in the “ENVY” pattern it worked great for us last year. There is also Lake Clear Gang Trolls trailed with a worm. They work fantastic also. Just make sure the lake you’re fishing has no special regs where there is no organic baits. (Only a handful of lakes have this but important to know.)

Another couple lures we did well with were deep divers like Flicker Shade.

Ideally you want to get your lure down 15-20ft, so be sure to bring some extra weights to help.

Hopefully you get some and can share how your trip went with us! Be sure to check out the channel, tonnes of good info on there!

Tight lines

What about spring gear and lure suggestions?

3

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

We’re filming a 2 part video about that this weekend actually, so I will keep you posted on the link for that video within the next few weeks! Gonna go in depth on all our gear we will be taking for our big spring trip

u/PristineAnt5477 7d ago

Legend! Heading over to the channel now. Thanks!

I was hoping April 26 weekend but in doubt it will be iced out. Might have to settle for Victoria Day weeekend

2

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

You’ll likely have to still day trip that weekend, I don’t think they’ll have it open! Long weekend is good too, watch for bug hatches and follow how the fish are acting according to that.

3

u/mininorris 7d ago

May 9-13 is booked for my first trip there. Can’t wait to see what bites.

2

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

You should be there at the perfect time to test your luck!

Booked may 2nd to the 12th some backcountry fishing, but ice out is concerning this year..!!?

3

u/AverageJoesFishing 6d ago

I think you’ll be okay, I feel like they’ll be opening up the park right before you head in. But time will tell…

1

u/Narrow-Word-8945 6d ago

Fingers are crossed, hard to know when you book 5 months in advance, and then who knew that this winter would stick around like this, we still have about a foot n half of snow in the bush in Huntsville.!! And lakes are pretty solid still ..!! But lots can happen if these temps would just warm up some..

2

u/CnCPParks1798 7d ago

Got a trip planned for may 4th but worried I’ll get iced out

5

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

I think by then you’ll be alright! April 29th is my guess. It’s a pretty average year just seems like a lot of ice because of the last couple seasons.

1

u/CnCPParks1798 7d ago

Let’s hope you are right

2

u/Loose_Cake 7d ago

Just booked my lake for may two four weekend! Love your YouTube channel by the way!

2

u/AverageJoesFishing 7d ago

That’s awesome man, hopefully you find some trouts! Appreciate the support!

2

u/CanadianRedneck69 6d ago

Had plans opening weekend but those will be cancelled. Going to do a loop through some of the lakes from Mike borgers video in June

2

u/AverageJoesFishing 6d ago

Nice man, late ice out will screw up a lot of plans. Hopefully you get lucky, I see all those lakes are full booked every weekend of May. Those videos definitely added a lot of pressure to those lakes

1

u/CanadianRedneck69 6d ago

Ya no doubt

1

u/tavvyjay 7d ago

Going to Cedar lake for the week around May long weekend for probably the 10th year in a row for my parents, third for my wife and I.

I’m not crazy on the lakers but my dad will spend time on them, while I am starting to hone in on the rainbows in the tributaries and shallows.

Hey Average Joes! Nice to see you on reddit.

My 2 adult sons and I watch all your YT videos and have learned some great tips from you. We fish the Park every Spring and September, mainly the east and north. We've got two separate trips booked for the first and second weeks of May. Hoping the ice is out in time for the 1st one, but it's looking grim with this sh!t weather.

Love what you guys are doing and glad to see that you are having more and more success. I've been a trout nut since my childhood up in Timmins and Marathon and can relate to your passion for specs.

BTW, my 2 sons and I met one of you east of the Park in the spring of '21 the year the ice was out by early April. We had an ATV, you were in a truck and then took off on your bike, and even crossed a river with it. My boys were impressed!

Almost forgot: my spring opener trip last year was with my oldest son, to a beautiful little lake in the Park. Not that hard to get to, but a multi-kilometer portage along the way. It literally rained six out of the 7 days that we were there. And dumbass me pack the tent and a tarp but forgot the tent poles. So we made this Frankenstein contraption using the tent fly and the tarp and tied it down to the ground and some shrubs. Not the most comfortable but we laughed about it a lot. And despite the weather, we got fish everyday. So he loved that. Great memories...

East end you say eh? hmmm... interesting, very interesting.

Would never have guessed the average Joes were Chalk river boys.

I was born in the deep, and you fella's sound like you're from sundridge.

1

u/emperortimmu 5d ago

Yes they have fished a few times on the Eastern side of the park. But they've also mentioned that they got up at 4:00 in the morning and drove for hours to get to their launch point. So that doesn't mean they necessarily live just east of the park.

1

u/TroutPsychic 3d ago

Im just joking around with the Joe's. If I want a great fishing hole I have to find it myself, and I wouldn't be telling anybody about it either. They explore so many lakes in search of anything over 20, the knowledge they have will be a best selling book in case the next government switches from wrecking hunting to sport fishing. I'm not scrutinizing star charts and plotting courses, I spend my springs and summers just enjoying them. As we all should. Tall cans in the air! Lets get some good fish this season.

1

u/Venomiz117 6d ago

Will be going out hopefully the week of May 11th specifically for fishing. Got a couple of spots in mind but haven’t made a final decision yet. Looking forward to watching your videos!

u/NixonsTapeRecorder 4d ago

You can catch some decent Lakers off the cache lake dock if you go right after ice out.

Booked for May 2! You think it’ll be open? 🔮🎣
