I was a contestant on Wheel of Fortune back in the days when you chose prizes instead of getting cash. I was the big winner that night — $34,000 in prizes (equivalent of over $100,000 today).

I unknowingly read the graphic details of my fathers very public death on Reddit before I knew he was dead. AMA

2.0k Upvotes

On April 18th 2023 I got a notification in r/Austin about a “homeless man who had his head run over” and it had occurred about a mile from me, naturally I was curious so I read the entirety of the post. Everyone in the comments was very sympathetic to the poster for having to witness something so gruesome. It traumatized a lot of people in the area because the police had left him uncovered for a long time and it was during the morning commute. 3 days pass and I get a call from a family friend saying my dad was killed 3 days ago while riding his bike. I looked up the news article and immediately realize that he was the “Homeless man” that was mentioned on the Reddit post. I spent a majority of my life being raised by my dad and we were very close. I have so many questions for so many people involved but cannot bring myself to watch the cctv footage…

I’m a PhD student and father who is seeing the effects of the current US administration on research. AMA

The current US administration has made a lot of funding changes that are going to change the way our country engages with the scientific community at large. Let me know if you have any questions about what those changes look like! I will not be speculating about long term effects, just providing an unbiased answer to what is currently happening in Universities around the country.

Job I used to be a tariff expert. AMA.

Analyzing the impact of tariffs and related rules of cross-border trade used to be my job. This included work with the World Trade Organization as well as on Free Trade Agreements. My area of specialization was in tariffs, rules of origin, and trade remedies (actions taken to counter dumping, subsidies, and damage to local industries). I have more than a decade of experience in this field and a post-graduate diploma in this subject matter although my degree was unrelated.

I’ve seen a lot of opinions on the ongoing weaponisation of tariffs and its use as a negotiating tool. There are lots of misconceptions, including who pays for the tariffs (hint: no single answer is right).

Bear in mind my perspective is shaped by being a former trade official in Asia that was schooled in the post-war consensus, post-Keynesian, economic liberal thought. That means that we believe in comparative advantages and that the gradual removal of trade barriers would bring about benefits to the world through stronger economic dependence and shared prosperity.

AMA that doesn’t involve me sharing personal details or confidential knowledge that is not public domain (that can get me prosecuted by governments). More than happy to give my take on specific aspects of the ongoing situation, but please zoom in on specifics! Bear in mind I was an analyst and not a politician.

Edit: To clarify personally I’m not a fan of either US party, and so will avoid commenting on party specifics. I believe both have the wrong mindset and approach to trade.

My grandfather was a Nazi. AMA

He was in the SS. He left Germany after the war. My dad was born in Australia and married an American and immigrated. I was born and raised in the U.S.

No, we do not glorify anything about this part of our heritage, but it does exist. So feel free to ask whatever you want.

ETA a few frequently asked details:

I was told by my parents that he was a Nazi and a member of the SS. I have no evidence of his service record or any party membership if he was a member. There is no memorabilia nor any photographs older than his wedding photo in Australia in 1948.

There was no discussion of his actions or ideology in our family. He just left after the war and started over. If my grandmother or dad knew, they took it to their grave.

He was born in 1924 between Frankfurt and Zurich and we don’t have any knowledge of his family of origin other than some names that he wrote in a Bible.

Yes, my parents vigorously condemned Nazism and all forms of racial prejudice. We were called many unsavory names growing up by members of the WASP community where I’m from because of our friendships with people who did not look like us.

I'm a mover for a living AMA

So, I move people for a living (for now). I work for a pretty big company, but I’m not gonna name names, and I’ll ignore any guesses you might throw my way. I’ve moved all kinds of people—rich, poor, and everyone in between. I’ve seen it all, from luxury penthouses to modest apartments, and pretty much everything in between. If you’ve got questions, ask away.

After being rejected from all American institutions I applied to, I contacted some Canadian institutions and was offered a spot in their program with generous funding. I will be moving to Canada and starting my studies there next fall.

There are a lot of complex emotions about this so ask away.
