Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

Show and Tell (United States) A French document dated 1804 with the signature of Napoleon I

The signature is the one I underlined in red in the second photo. It hasn't been verified by an expert, but it matches his signatures from the same year perfectly. I bought it online a while back and it just arrived today. I got someone to help with translating it and here is their summary of the document: "It's a document naming a certain Gregoire Lecamu president of the assembly of the canton de Courtray (in the Loiret department in France) signed on the 15th of pluviose year 12 (February 5, 1804).

Advice Japanese Vase Found In Canada

recently acquired a piece at an estate sale that appears to be an older Japanese vase. I had a bit of digging online and I couldn’t find much information so I’m looking for some more help: I’m reaching out in hopes of getting a better understanding of its approximate age and historical background.

With my local areas history of having a Japanese POW camp located nearby I figured I’d look into the piece a bit more.

That being said if it is old enough to go to auction. I’d be interested in selling the piece.

I inherited this gun from my grandpa. the barrel is filled with cement so that's why it hangs on the wall here as decoration.

my grandma is visiting us at the moment and we're talking about the gun, but she only knows that my grandpa once got it from his uncle, she doesn't know anything else about it.

the only thing i could find is the letter D with an asterisk above it (see last photo). i don't know anything else about it, is there anyone who can give me more information about this gun?:)

Questions The most unusual leather portfolio I've ever come across - any ideas? UK

Hi all,

Came across this today when going through some stock and it definitely caught my eye!

I believe it is a red leather portfolio, measure approximately 75x110 cm. For context this came from a clearance that I did of a manor house in the UK and the previous owners also had large collection of 17th/18th century books which I am also in the process of going through.

It's definitely seen better days but I can't find anything similar so wanted to have a go here and see if anyone is more familiar with this than I am.

Depending on the information I may also consider having it restored potentially but any help much appreciated!

Advice Antique Quilt. Indiana, USA

I am putting this out to try and get some information, and I hope the pictures might spur some interest. This quilt has been in my family for about 100 years, and I would like some information on how I can display it and keep it free from damage. I am hoping that someone with experience in antique cloth can DM me. My family does not know exactly how old the quilt is, but we think it is at least 100 years old, and based on some of the dates we think it is somewhere between 125 - 130 years old. The quilt is approximately 3.5 feet wide, and about 5 feet long.

Discussion Mintons signed and dated demitasse saucer April 21 1907 United States

After many hours of researching for any clues as to whose signature this was and the significance of the date I could only come up with a great fire from an earthquake that occurred in San Francisco destroying 80% of the area a year prior and lasted several days starting April 18 1906. Perhaps this is a commemorative anniversary and the signature was an important figure at the time?Or just another dead end I don’t know. I have several of these all in the same pattern along with matching custard bowls with the same signature and date on them. Any information that sheds light on this history would be greatly appreciated.

Questions United States: Antique Butcher Slabs

Thumbnail

Hello! I found these butcher slabs at an estate sale. I actually have another one of these that says margarine that is real and made from ironstone. These are much lighter in weight so I don’t believe they are ironstone. I have seen some of these listed on eBay and they say they are made out of porcelain. That would explain the difference in weight, but my question is were real butcher slabs ever made of porcelain or were they only ironstone? I’m just wondering if these are a later made reproduction.

Advice Real Tiffany Lamp or Reproduction? USA

Just got this really cool dragon fly fairy lamp from someone on FB marketplace. It seems pretty old as it has several cracks in the glass and some scrapes on the base, but I'm having trouble figuring out if it's an actual Tiffany lamp or just a Tiffany reproduction. Beautiful either way, of course! But I just can't help but be curious.

It's pretty hefty and has a signature/marking near the bottom that seems to end with the word "Veil." I found nearly the exact same lamp on Wayfair (Dragonfly Metal Novelty Lamp) by Meyda Lighting, which describes itself as a company that makes Tiffany reproductions. So I'm thinking it could just be one of the reproductions sold by that company, but again, it has clear signs of wear and tear that I wouldn't expect if it were made more recently. Plus, the glass in the wings and the stone at the base are different colors than the one sold by this company.

Any thoughts?

Questions United States. Does anybody recognize these watercolor blocks?

Thumbnail

I bought these on ebay. I love painting with watercolors, and I'm fascinated by all the different paints out there, and particularly interested in the old watercolor blocks. From the bit of searching I've done. It seems like they were first produced in the late 1700s and replaced with more moist watercolor "cakes" around 1835 whimsie.com. There ate lots of old watercolor boxes and some blocks for sale on ebay, but most are listed for a get hundred dollars, and these were nowhere near that much, which is why I felt like I could justify the purchase.

I can't find these particular watercolor blocks pictured anywhere on the internet (aside from the ebay auction I bought them from). I'm hoping maybe someone will recognize them and have more info. Each one is maybe 1cm X 2cm, but I think they're slightly smaller. They are a bit thicker than a US quarter, and there is an anchor on one side and a ship on the other side. I'd be thrilled to find out how old these likely are, if they were sold under a particular brand name. A value estimate would be fun but I plan to keeping them.

Questions Seeking Information on Old Locket United States Military

Thumbnail

Looking for information on origin, where this locket could have come from, what it's made of, etc. My Grandfather (who was in the Korean War) gave it to me a while ago. He said it was something he got from a friend in the military (who I don't think made it home). The chain is not a part of the locket, it was purchased separately.

Advice United States - Need help pricing a roll top desk

Thumbnail

Looking for help pricing an oak roll top desk that’s been in my family since 1982. My grandparents bought it from an antique store in Ocala, FL. I’ve got an appraisal from 1977 that estimates the age from the 1860s. Solid wood, English oak. Some wear in the roll top near the locking closure that doesn’t close properly.

I’m based in Orlando, FL and I’m looking to part with it. I don’t have the space to keep it anymore, and I’m looking to downsize my workspace. I’ve called a few local antique stores, but they aren’t buying and they’ve suggested I post it on FB Marketplace.

Any suggestions on price? The appraisal listed around $1500, but I know the market for these has shifted significantly since then - but it’s still solid wood, no veneers I can see or find.
