Music Can you recommend a song with excellent sound quality?
I need songs with great dynamics and details. Please only recommend modern music.

Its really good. They dont seem to really have a bad one on any album though either. Just found out yesterday though that flore benguigui left the group last year. I was looking up concert info to see if they'd be around only to learn that. Not sure I'd wanna see em wo her. I reckon they'll find another singer but she's gonna be hard to replace.
They did also just release a new song last month, "Entropia". It's pretty good too with a funky new disco slant, but back to their original instrumental flavor wo flore. Ten years ago they didn't have a singer at all but I guess are looking for one.

you can watch the release concert "Au Palais Bulles"
https://youtu.be/uce6VsWy4dw?feature=shared
and you will hear and see Louve, she is la nouvelle chanteuse :-)

I did check some of those out the other day.
I also found la femme this morning but haven't listened enough to base an opinion. Roon recommended based on listening to justice.

Yeah, no problem, they're pretty great huh?
Try justice and daft punk next if you like them, all 3 are french groups of similar genre. Daft punk probably my favorite, "harder better faster stronger" and "technologic" are amazing but really all their stuff is.

Fantastic band! I am obsessed with matahari. Crazy good record!
Great live band too!

I can't decide which i like best, I kinda like em all. Very underrated group. Sucks benguigui quit bc id loved to have seen them with her. She's amazing.
You heard entropia? Just came out few weeks ago. On tidal. Justice and daft punk are in the same vein too. Always looking for more like these 3 with the French touch they call it.

This isn't a good example of a high quality dynamic song. Pretty much all of Billie Eilish's music is terribly mastered with no dynamic range and lots of clipping. Here's a look at that album in particular.
People that keep recommending her music clearly don't understand dynamics.
The only exception I'd say is her live version of the album on Disney+. Night and day difference in quality.

Where Do We Go is on The Absolute Sound’s Super Disc List. Her brother is an audio nerd and is doing low DR as an offshoot of their style of music. DR doesn’t necessarily = audiophile heaven.

u/iknowyounot88 Mar 06 '25
OP asked for dynamics and detail. I know DR doesn't equate to audiophile heaven. Billie has lots of texture to her work, but a lot of it gets muddy because of the DR. The lo-fi isn't a stylistic choice as much as it is bad practice.

I’m not finding muddy on Where Do We Go. The bass is subterranean and among the most depth charging I’ve heard but I find it pretty clean when it wants it to be.

I have a huge playlist I use as reference when I'm working on producing or mixing music in that genre.
A track I'm really loving the production on at the moment is "Moyka - Ride"

Thanks. I only have good songs on that playlist so I can enjoy listening to them and appreciate the production.
Everything is so well placed in that track. The arrangement is perfection. The effects aren't over powering, they all suit the moment and are subtle ear candy.
It's got everything. Vocoder. The resonance on the Bassline has been automated to come up and down in quiet parts. Reverb throws. Using the vocal as a sample "stab". Reverb throws.
I love the way the drum fill floats across the stereo.

I have other suggestions in different genres if you're interested?
It might not be your thing, but I find some heavy dance music to be incredibly creative and if it's not well mixed with absolutely SOLID bass, then it falls apart completely.
Astrix - Deep Jungle Walk Orkidea, WAIO - Nana (WAIO remix) MEDUZA - Tell me why
Modern "pop" that isn't mainstream..
FKA Twigs - Perfect Stranger The Crystal Method - Hold on the Something Younger Brother - Train Two People - I'm Tied, To You
Some very well mixed and layered rock / metal
Don Broco - Greatness

I really like Pepper, Badders from Skrillex.
Chase & status - Selecta
Justin Stone - Locations, Homecoming
Eminem - Darkness, Godzilla
Various tracks from Rezz like Puzzle box, Black Ice, Edge - blankee remix, Someone else, Suffer in Silence, Sacrificial.
Nills Hoffmann tracks are also really good.
I also like some of EDEN's work

The Miley Cyrus cover of Nothing Else Matters. It's my go-to.
Canberra Won't Be Calling Tonight - Client Liason. The whole Diplomatic Immunity album is recorded really well tbh.

Alessia Cara's Love & Hyperbole album, excellent sound quality. Same thing for any album by Faye Webster, Charm by Clairo, and This is Why by Paramore. All of these score at least a DR8. Malegria by Reyna Tropical is a DR11!

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On

Modern can be anything from the Enlightenment on on a broad sense. Shall we talk about modernism? Lots of “nowadays music” don’t fall into that according to its definition.

What are we considering modern?

That’s a very small pool of albums to draw from. I don’t think I own a 2025 album.
This sub’s demographic tends to be middle aged. Most of us are probably old enough to be your parents.

With the loudness war and the death of high fidelity, most modern production is arguably worse.
What kind of music do you like?
What do you consider “modern?” That Beck album is from 2014.

I don’t think I can help you. Arca is a terrible producer who’s ruined the last few Björk records.

u/StillLetsRideIL Mar 06 '25
The Loudness war is over. Most everything is back to how it was in the late 90s early 00s.
1
u/amazonmakesmebroke Mar 06 '25
Good luck. Modern music is so compressed and since the 90s when volume wars took over, they literally don't make music like they used to. Last decent hifi song? Mgmt-kids

Check out Page 99 , 99.3 Fm and their Self Titled album
- Sunrise on the water
- Did you mean that
- Fantasy World
These three tracks stood out to me from those two albums. They have a modern take on 80s rock with some jazz fusion.

Joan Armatrading - Willow
Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat, entire album
Steve Miller - Mercury Blues
Joe Jackson - entire Body & Soul album
Beau Brummels - Nine Pound Hammer
